Vintage gay

Much thanks to Arnon who shared this photo and note on the reverse-side. His father is shown above on the right. Arnon shared his family history and the relationship of these two men, which is quite tender and personal. The inscription on the flip side of the photograph shows the date of October 23, 1943. For historical reference this photo was taken in Europe during WWII; weeks after Italy surrendered to the Allied Forces. However, fighting would continue to rage in Europe until May 8, 1945. It makes me wonder what these men were forced to endure – fortunately both survived the war.

I dedicate this weekly post, featuring vintage gay photographs, to the men and women who lived in a more critical time where being true to yourself and loving who you want wasn’t always an option and came at a great price. This week on Instagram: matt_kennedy1

I have to thank Joe who is the man behind the popular The Closet Professor blog. Last December he shared a Tik Tok video of Matt Kennedy that I used for my weekly Men in Kilts post. This Scottish actor has undeniable boyish good looks and an endearing personality which comes through in his playful posts on his Instagram and Tik Tok clips.

You’ll find his IG account is filled with photos of Matt out on the town and enjoying time with friends. If you scroll far enough through his profile you’ll also see some of the cities he visited when he was on tour with Mama Maria the musical.

Caption this photo

This week’s photo was sent to me last year by my friend Jim Lundy – much thanks this is hilarious. Hopefully the caption I’ve shared below inspires you to offer up one or two of your own. Leave a funny caption as a comment for this post, and I’ll approve it for readers to enjoy.

“Foul!!!”

Can you feel the heat down under

I don’t know what is happening with professional tennis but if you have been watching the Australian Open this year, you’d know exactly what I’m talking about. While the Australian Open continues without fans due to a national lockdown to prevent the spread of COVID-19 the lack of noise and commotion adds more camera time on the players. You really don’t need to be a tennis fan to be interested in the sport.

The number one seed, Novak Djokovic, looks good. His Lacoste apparel will appeal to those who like the preppy look.

What can I say about Rafael Nadal other than he is amazing?!? Despite being “ancient” by tennis standards at the age of 34 he is ranked second in the world. If he wins the Australian Open he will have 21 Grand Slam Titles to Federer’s 20 Grand Slam Titles.

Dominic Thiem is ranked number three in the world. But I’ve commented more about Dominic Thiem’s ass in 2017 and again in 2020 here than I have about his game. But don’t be decieved by his booty. He has game for days.

The Greek a.k.a. Stefanos Tsitsipas is one of my favorite players on the circuit. The 22 year old is ranked six in the world and is equally exceptional in talent and looks. I first wrote about him last fall here, The handsome Stefanos Tsitsipas.

Tennis pro

If you don’t follow tennis you may not know who Alexander Zverev is, but the 23 year old German is ranked seven in the world. He has yet to win a major but is a threat to anyone on the court.

Be still my beating heart whenever Matteo Berrettini steps on court. The 6’5″ Italian from Rome is the number ten player in the world, and I am smitten. This photo of his abs and see-through shorts, swiped from Kenneth in the 212 pretty much says it all.

I first wrote about Grigor Dimitrov in 2011. He looks like such a baby in this photo, but the Bulgarian is an excellent hard court player. The twenty-first ranked player in the world is so easy on the eyes you might find yourself distracted by his looks but he has game.

Fabio Fognini is another talented Italian who’s fiery personality on and off the court can make him get all sort of attention. Fognini loves attention and he certainly got mine when he posed nude for Cosompolitan Magazine. Let’s see how far this 30-something player can go. I’ll be cheering for him.

Temptation Tuesday

I have featured Ross Jirgle in past Furry Fridays, but today, I think this photo of him makes for the perfect at-work distraction. His killer smile and all-American good looks certainly seem tempting to me.

Happy Valentine’s Day

Joe Andrews, handsome, hunk, naked

I’m sharing this photo of my friend Joe from a few years ago, because I think it is a visually stimulating way to acknowledge this day. Joe lives in San Francisco and is a successful coach and trainer so if you’re in the Bay Area and looking to get into shape check him out at rebel-warrior.com. He’ll provide ample “gympsiration” and is a great guy.

BosGuy cooks: Fake mashed potatoes

I like mashed potatoes. They are a great comfort food, but I enjoy how much lighter my “fake” mashed potatoes made with cauliflower taste so I thought I’d share this recipe with you to get your thoughts. In full disclosure I keep playing with this recipe and am open to suggestions.

The recipe comes together in three stages and can be made in 15-20 minutes depending on your prep. It is even easier to make if you purchase already chopped or riced cauliflower. For this recipe, you will need a blender or something to help purée the vegetable as well as the following ingredients:

  • Cauliflower (1 lb)
  • 2-3 tablespoons of butter
  • 3-4 cloves of garlic (I used roasted garlic)
  • 4-5 tablespoons of sour cream
  • pinch of kosher salt and fresh cracked black pepper
  • 1/4 cup of grated Parmesean cheese
  • 1/3 cup of water
  • Olive oil

Step 1 Prep: Preheat your oven to 425 degrees, and divide the cauliflower in half. Half of the cauliflower will be roasted and half will be steamed. If you buy a head of cauliflower, cut the florets into roughly even sizes (smaller is better because it will cook faster and be easier to blend).

Step 2 Cooking: Drizzle olive oil over the cauliflower and sprinkle a few pinches of salt then place the baking tray in the oven. Riced cauliflower (shown above) will only need 5-7 minutes. When the edges start browning take it out. Larger florets will need more time so adjust accoringly.

Steam the other half in the microwave by adding a 1/4 cup of water, salt and half the butter cut into small pieces. Seal the bowl with wrap and set at high for ~3 minutes. When there is approximately one minute remaining, take out and stir the vegetable and put back into the microwave to finish.

Step 3 Blending: Let the cauliflower cool for 2-3 minutes then add to your blender along with the remaining amount of butter, Parmesean cheese and garlic. I used four roasted garlic cloves, but in the future I will use more, because I like the flavoring. Blend briefly then add the sour cream and additional seasoning and blend or fold in and mix together – taste as you go and add more sour cream and seasoning to your liking.

Scruffy Sunday

A Sunday morning in bed with boyfriends, Brett Andrew Miles and Lex Abramov, seems like the perfect set up for a Scruffy Sunday post. I’ve shared other photos of these two in the past as well. Here is another favorite which I posted back in 2019, Lex Abramov and Brett Andrew Miles.

Three new theaters could be coming to Seaport District in coming years

It has been a difficult year for Boston’s performing arts community. Unable to put on live productions, many in the arts have turned to broadcasting shows and other creative ways to connect with audiences.

However, there is a real desire to return to the stage and host live cultural events again when it is safe so I was excited to read in The Boston Globe that three new theaters will be built in the Seaport District with two expected to open in Amazon’s building (shown above) in 2024 when it opens.

Amazon’s office building in the Seaport is currently under construction, but when it is finished it will include two new theaters on the second and third floors with a capacity of 500 and 150 seats. A third smaller theater with a capacity of approximately 100 seats will also likely be developed in another building in the Seaport that has yet to be identified.

The new performance space is likely to be managed and operated by Boston’s Celebrity Series and be reserved for Boston’s nonprofit performing arts organizations. The city would like to have the Celebrity Series, which was established in 1938, act as a mentor to less seasoned arts companies, while providing more space for local theater companies. Affordable space for smaller theater production companies was high on the list of the Boston arts community prior to the pandemic and presumably will be put to good use when it is safe to perform in front of live audiences again.
