Boston’s No Pants Subway Ride is happening

One of Boston’s cheekier traditions, The No Pants Subway Ride, is happening today on the MBTA so don’t be surprised if you see a fair number of men and women commuting in their underwear this afternoon.

Want to join last minute? Check out the details here.

Boston is getting wicked expensive

Boston Back BayWhile it is no secret that Boston is an expensive city to live in as compared to most of the United States, Boston Magazine article “Boston Is Getting Really Expensive” highlights just how expensive.

Boston’s cost of living is 39.7% above the U.S. average, with groceries and healthcare running 26% above average, while median household income remains on par with the rest of the country. According to the article more than 1/3 of the city’s homeowners work 4 months or more each year just to pay for housing.

Boston’s condo costs range dramatically, depending on location. Hover over each neighborhood below to see costs per square foot in 2015.

PROPRIETARY ANALYSIS OF CLOSED MARKET RATE TRANSACTIONS. ANALYSIS EXCLUDES AFFORDABLE AND RESTRICTED HOUSING UNITS AND FORECLOSURES.

The Boston Magazine article correctly pointed out that in the long run Boston will lose if more is not done to make the city more affordable. Our political, business and community leaders need to stop thinking small and learn to act more boldly. As Boston launches its major planning effort, a.k.a. “Imagine Boston 2030”, regional planning must drive the discussion.

Why so many gay bars are closing

Show Tune Tuesday @dbarOn Christmas Eve The Economist published “Gay bars are under threat but not from the obvious attackers“. Although Boston is not mentioned, the transformation of our city’s traditional gay neighborhood, The South End, from a gritty cityscape into a trendy, upscale place young married couples and retirees are now choosing to live highlights one of the many challenges facing gay bars.

What constitutes a gay bar and what is the fate of these spaces remains to be seen. There have been times when I’ve been in “gay bars” that are so overrun by heterosexual couples and or packs of single women that I’m hard pressed to think of it as a ‘gay bar’.  Club Cafe in Boston, The Boatslip Tea Dances in Provincetown and Mainestreet in Ogunquit are all good examples.

drink, cocktail, boston, bar, nightlifeThe Economist asserts that where there is growing acceptance of the LGBTQ community, bars are more likely to be mixed or the LGBTQ community may feel less of a need to be a patron at a designated “gay” bar. It also suggests that the advent of “dating” apps has added another challenge, but I think it is mostly what I think of as a gay diaspora that poses the most significant problem for gay bars. As cities lose traditional gay enclaves, all sorts of businesses that cater to the LGBTQ community suffer. An early casualty to this was the gay bookstore followed by sex shops and gay gyms.

In my opinion bars have held out longer because even after many gay men move away from a traditional ‘gay neighborhood’ they return at night for dinner or drinks. However, I think the impact of losing a gay neighborhood means the long term prospects for many gay bars is grim. I don’t necessarily think Boston will lose all its gay bars but the density and numbers of gay bars has been severely cut over the past two decades since the South End migration started.

Queer Boston: Mark Morrisroe

Self Portrait 1980 Source: clampart.com

Self Portrait 1980 – Source: clampart.com

Mark Morrisroe (January 10, 1959 – July 24, 1989) was an American performance artist and photographer who was born to a drug-addicted mother in Malden, MA. Due to his unhappy home life (he happened to also be a tenant of Albert DeSalvo, who would become known as the infamous “Boston Strangler”) he moved out at the age of 15 and began hustling to make ends meet.

Despite his hardships, he became known for his performances and photographs, which contributed to the development of the punk scene in Boston in the 1970s and the art world boom of the mid to late 1980s in New York City.

I had never heard about Mark until I learned that there would be an exhibit featuring some of his photos called Mark Morrisroe: Works from 1982 – 85, showing at Alexander & Bonin in NYC through December 22nd. Should you find yourself in NYC and like to see more of this remarkable man’s work, check out the exhibit before it closes next week.

Sanctuary cities like Boston face real threat from Trump

Boston, sanctuary city, immigrationRecently San Francisco made news by passing a resolution, indicating they intend to remain a sanctuary city. I’m proud that Boston’s Mayor as well as mayors from several surrounding cities including Cambridge and Somerville have also repeated that they will remain a sanctuary city even if it means losing federal funding which could happen, considering President-elect Trump has pledged to move against sanctuary cities financially, saying,“We will cancel all federal funding to sanctuary cities.”

It is hard to tell what will happen, but I support Mayor Walsh on this issue. Donald Trump may have won the presidential election but he lost in a landslide here and his values are not my state’s values. I’d rather Boston work with mayors from other cities like San Francisco and New York City than compromise on this.

Dewey Square’s latest mural inspires and gives me hope

Mehdi Ghadyanloo, Rose Kennedy Greenway art, Boston Public Art, Dewey SquareLast month I wrote about the Iranian artist, Mehdi Ghadyanloo, who was asked to paint a mural in Boston’s Dewey Square. The artist has made a name for himself painting large trompe-l’oeils in his homeland and the mural that the public was able to watch him create which spans an impressive 76′ x 70′ is a beautiful addition to the Rose Kennedy Greenway.

Called, Spaces of Hope, the mural does not disappoint and is a welcome addition following what I thought was an uninspiring mural it replaced. You can read more about the artist and his first piece of public art here in the US by visiting the Rose Kennedy Greenway website here.

Below I’ve posted the murals in chronological order that have previously graced this facade in Dewey Square.BosArts, boston public art, Mehdi GhadyanlooI’m proud that this Iranian artist was commissioned and given this space to share his work. Good art like Ghadyanloo can help foster dialog and breakdown stereotypes; something I think our country needs to do more of if we are going to come together as one nation.

Rally at State House from 11AM-12PM to speak out against hate

Boston, MassAs a response to a disturbing number of hate crimes that have been reported around the country since the results of the Presidential election, our community is coming together today from 11AM – 12PM to speak out against hate. The event will feature Attorney General Maura Healey, Boston Mayor Martin J. Walsh, Treasurer Deborah B. Goldberg, Boston City Councilor Josh Zakim

The purpose of the event is to send a message that irrespective of politics or who you supported in the election this kind of behavior is not acceptable and does not represent who we are as a city, state, or country.  massachusetts-rallyI realize this may be difficult for you to attend, but for more information you can contact Norman Abbott at nabbott@adl.org or (617) 406-6382.
