Mitt Romney Gay Pride Flier

Candidate Mitt Romney seems to have multiple personalities. If you happen to live in any of the states holding Republican Presidential Primaries or Caucuses today, you probably won’t hear anything nearly as friendly from Romney.  Lately. he’s jumped at the opportunity to show his “Conservative Credentials”.

I wonder why his competitors have not seized this opportunity to illustrate his hypocrisy?  I suppose there are probably just too many other examples, but I couldn’t help but laugh when I saw this image which was posted on Spirit Magazine’s website. If you find this funny, check out James Lopata’s humorous article, Top 10 Gay Reasons to Vote GOP in 2012.

Men of Twitter

Each Monday I blog about profiles of men on Twitter who catch my eye and whom I think you may enjoy following. As always, suggestions for profiles to feature are welcome. If you’d like to follow me on twitter, you can find me @BosGuy. You can find me talking about these men on Twitter by searching the #MenOfTwitter hash mark.

hectorfonseca – You don’t have to be club kid to recognize this handsome Jersey kid with Puerto Rican roots. Hector Fonseca is a successful DJ / producer who has been touring the US and the world.  Even if you are unlikely to find yourself at a club, you probably would like Hector’s music.  Last year he had a series of successful remixes for artists like Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, and Beyonce.  Clearly the guy knows what he’s doing. Music lovers and fans can follow Hector who Tweets regularly.

jasaonyantha – Originally from Ottawa, Jason now calls Toronto home where he works as a producer at MTV Canada. This low-key, handsome guy freely admits he probably spends too much time on Twitter and Facebook.  However, he clearly has a great sense of humor too as he’s quite proud of his latest home decorating project, framing all five of Lindsay Lohan’s mugshots as “wall art”.  Want to learn more about Jason? You can follow him on Twitter and check out a website that includes some photos of his friends, jasonyantha.com.

2012 Fenway Men’s Event

This past weekend was one of Boston’s largest GLBT fundraisers of the year.  More than 1,300 gay men, their friends and allies came together to raise money for one of the nation’s largest GLBT healthcare facilities, The Fenway Health Clinic.

This year’s recipient of the Gerry E. Studds Award was Massachusetts Representative Barney Frank.

Below is a quick video I have created from the 2012 Fenway Men’s Event on Saturday night. Thank you very much to all who posed for a photo and my sincere apologies to those who were not included.

2012 Fenway Health Men’s Event

One of the largest GLBT events in Boston is this evening. The black tie event which will draw more than 1,300 from the Boston gay community helps raise funds for The Fenway Health Clinic – one of the largest GLBT-focused research and healthcare centers in the country.

This year’s recipient of the Gerry E. Studds Award is Congressman Barney Frank.  I can only imagine what he’ll have to say about the recently failed Blunt Amendment which focused on restricting birth control access for women or the current debate regarding same sex marriage to this group of 1,300 men only too willing to open their check books and send a message to D.C. to stay out of our bedrooms and stop trying to legislate religious teachings.

Here is a quick video from all the fun that was had at the 2011 Men’s Event.

Calvin Klein sells sex better than clothes

I had to remind myself this was an advertisement when I first saw this picture.  Calvin Klein has always been brilliant at using sex to sell their merchandise.  I’ll admit I’ve never been a fan of the clothing, but I’ve always had a deep appreciation for their marketing.

Want more? Here’s Calvin Klein’s 2012 Spring underwear campaign.

All politics is local

Tip O’Neill was an outspoken liberal politician from Massachusetts who is attributed with the quote “all politics is local“.  So when I read The Advocate’s article, “A most-wanted list: Mayors not for marriage”I started thinking about how important it is to have the support of a sitting mayor. Not only can they be a huge advocate, but more importantly they have a strong network of volunteers and community leaders within the city they represent.

Mayors from some of our largest cities have already pledged their support for same sex marriage.  Mayors from cities like New York City, Washington D.C., and Boston have proven to be staunch supporters.  However it is in states where same sex marriage remains illegal that mayors can make a huge difference.

The Wikipedia page Supporters of Same-Sex Marriage lists elected officials who support the right to marry.  Using that list and the Advocate article, I’ve compiled a list of mayors who have not pledged their support.  Take a moment to share this with friends and if you live in one of these cities reach out to your mayor.  If any of this information is incorrect or if I’m missing a mayor you would like added, please leave a comment.

How to make a Mormon gay

Earlier this month leaders of the Mormon Church (an organization I freely admit I have no love for)  apologized to the family of Holocaust survivor and Jewish rights advocate Simon Wiesenthal after his parents were posthumously baptized, a controversial ritual that Mormons believe allows deceased people a way to the afterlife but offends members of many other religions.

Since the Mormon Church has a rather foul record for trying to ‘convert’ gay men and women, one website has applied the religion’s small minded teachings and insensitive practices so you may posthumously ‘convert’ Mormons into a gay person.  You can check out the site and convert a deceased Mormon into something truly fabulous by visiting, AllDeadMormonsAreNowGay.com

Beware! Once converted there are no take backs!

Taye Diggs

Ever since seeing Idina Menzel perform on the Atlantis Cruise earlier this month I’ve found myself thinking about her very handsome husband, Taye Diggs.

I remember the first time I ever saw him in the late 90s movie How Stella Got Her Groove Back where he played the role of the young, Jamaican lover of the much older Stella Payne played by Angela Bassett.  His career has spanned television, movies and Broadway. It was his role in a little off Broadway musical called Rent where he met his wife, Idina.  Taye has recently added the role of father when his son was born a few years ago.  His new role as Dad has done nothing to diminish his sex appeal and he continues to distract me.

Anne Hathaway on gay rights

I couldn’t have said it better myself Anne. Thanks for being a decent human being. Now if we can just get a few more decent people together to end all this indecency.

Mitt Romney brags about discriminating

Would Romney supporters think as highly of this man if his quote below was addressing interracial marriage?  After all, this is our generations version of that same issue.  How satisfying it must be to support a man who proudly proclaims his discriminatory beliefs and is cheered along the way.

When I am president, I will defend the Defense of Marriage Act. And I will fight for an amendment to our constitution that defines marriage as a relationship between a man and a woman

– Mitt Romney, Republican Primary Presidential Candidate speaking to Conservative Political Action Committee (CPAC) on February 10, 2012

Same Sex Marriage is inevitable so get over it

The past few weeks have been heady for same sex marriage advocates and since today, Valentine’s Day, is all about expressing love with someone you care about the thought of addressing some of these recent “wins” seems appropriate to me.

Aside from the increasingly vile rhetoric from conservative elements of the Republican Party generally verbalized through Romney, Gingrich and Santorum, most of the news with regards to same sex marriage in 2012 has been overwhelmingly positive.

The cultural shift of the general population accepting same sex marriage tilted a few years ago and while it may not be apparent depending on where you live, national polls in the US show an undeniable trend that makes social bigots conservatives tremble with both fury and fear.Without dwelling on that lovely thought for too long, let’s review what has happened in the new year.

  • February 7th US 9th District Court of Appeals declared Proposition 8 unconstitutional
  • February 13th Gov. Gregoire signed a bill into law making Washington the 7th state to legalize marriage (effective June 7, 2012)
  • February 13th NJ State Senate passed a bill to recognize same sex marriage 24-16; picking up 8 votes from 2010 when the same body rejected same sex marriage 20-14
  • MD, NC, MN and ME are also considering initiatives addressing same sex marriage

Surveys show the more visible the GLBT community has become the more Americans support GLBT equality. For everyone who had the conviction to step into the light and leave the closet this must be sweet news.

So I’d like to wish everyone a very Happy Valentine’s Day, but for those GLBT couples, I’d like to let you know there is a special place in my heart for you and I wish you much love and happiness.

Men of Twitter: Valentine’s day edition

Each Monday I post #MenOfTwitter profiles of men whom I think you may enjoy following. Since Valentine’s Day is this week I wanted to feature couples.

I hope you enjoy this Valentine’s Day / Week edition of Men of Twitter. If you share a Twitter handle or are part of a couple who both use Twitter regularly on separate handles, be sure to leave a comment about yourself and include your Twitter handle(s).

Neil Patrick Harris (@ActuallyNPH) and David Burka (@DavidBurtka)      This Hollywood couple first openly admitted they were dating back in the fall of 2007, but they have been together since 2004.  In 2010 the two adopted twins and currently wait for marriage to be legalized in their home state of California.  I could say quite a bit more about these two but I figure the longevity of their relationship in an industry notorious for marriages that last for 72 days (or less) speaks for itself.

Perhaps this next couple lacks the Hollywood buzz the first couple enjoys but Henry (@AkennedyRent) and Aaron (@doschain98) are just as proud to be together.  By sheer coincidence they share the same last name and like their famous counterparts in this week’s Men of Twitter they are are not yet married. Its not legal in their home state of NJ (at least not yet).

The Real Men of Atlantis

Earlier this week I posted photos of guys from the Atlantis Events cruise I recently attended. You can see them here, The Real Men of Atlantis and Men of Atlantis. Here are a few more photos of guys I met last week.Jason is a nurse who wanted to get away from Toronto’s chilly winter and have a week of fun.  It’s odd how some people I rarely or never saw and then others I continued to bump into.  Jason was part of that second group and I’m so glad he was. He’s an absolute sweetheart.

Gregory was one of the Atlantis staff on board helping poor saps like me navigate their way around the ship and answering questions. As it turns out, Greg also happens to live one block from me in Boston. I had no idea until we started chatting.  This interesting guy is all smiles and very friendly.

Fernando came all the way from Columbia and when I met him mid way through the week at one of the bars on the 5th deck he was still trying to figure out what to make of the trip.  He loved the social aspect of the cruise and was considering checking out one of the singles parties. I wonder if this nice Latino met someone?

Daniel has a shy but friendly demeanor.  He is from the Salt Lake City area and recently met someone, which might explain his winsome smile.  Aside from meeting him briefly in the middle of the week I’m not sure that we crossed paths a second time.

Where have all the gay bookstores gone?

Earlier this year, I wrote a quick post about the demise of LGBT bookstores after reading Queerty’s article,The Last Chapter: A Look At LGBT Bookstores Around the World.

Not too long ago most large cities had a collection of LGBT bookstores, but over the years, most of these have closed.  Truth be told, I’m not much of a shopper, but I’ve always enjoyed nosing around a neighborhood bookstore and have visited a few of the places featured in the article.

After my initial post, several people made suggestions to the list of LGBT bookstores still in operation.  I wanted to give Boston’s Calamus Books a shout out and promote those remaining stores that serve our community.  If you live in one of these towns or plan on visiting – consider showing your support and making your next purchase of books, cards, DVDs or magazines there.

LGBT bookstores listed by city:

Amsterdam – Vrolijk  Ann Arbor – Common Language Bookstore  Atlanta – Outwrite  Boston – Calamus Books  Chicago – Unabridged Bookstore  London – Gay’s the word  Melbourne – Hares & Hyenas  Paris – Les Mots a la Bouche  Philadelphia – Giovanni’s Room  Provincetown – Now Voyager Bookstore  Sydney – The Bookshop  Vancouver – Little Sisters

Share this post or the information provided above on your facebook page. If you live near one of these places; not only check them out but bring a friend along as well.
