NFL’s shameful profiteering from breast cancer

Those who follow my blog know that I have very little interest in football, but last week I happened to watch the New England Patriots game and noticed the pink emblazoned uniforms.

According to the Business Insider article Is the NFL profiting off of breast cancer?,  the NFL claims by purchasing pink items in the NFL Shop, fans can “support the fight against breast cancer with pink NFL breast cancer awareness gear.” is very misleading.

However, only 5% of these sales are being donated to the American Cancer Society. If the pink products have a typical 100% mark-up at retail, that means the NFL is keeping 90% of the profit from the sale of Breast Cancer Awareness gear.  So purchasing these items does little to help with research and prevention and predominantly ends up lining the pockets of billionaire NFL owners.

Shame on you NFL

How many vacations do you take each year

Sydney Opera House – Sydney, Australia

Gaydar reported their U.K. site found gay men in the United Kingdom are taking on average four holidays abroad each year.  They write, “Our research indicates that gay guys are bucking the economic downfall and indulging in double the number of holidays abroad compared with the average Brit, who will take two.”

The Gaydar study, that surveyed more than 2,000 men in the UK, made me wonder if gay men in other countries were more likely to take more vacations.  My travels are fairly well documented (both local and abroad).  I have a trip to go to Brazil later this year and am already thinking about where I might go early next year.

Are you a vacation hoarder? Do you get away and disconnect from work?  How do you compare to our U.K. counterparts who seem to be living la dolci vita?

Banned Ikea commercial “Tidy Up”

Back in 2009 Ikea released this commercial but apparently it was banned in the USA.  I thought it was hilarious and maybe you will agree.  I hope it brings you a chuckle this morning. Loved some of the comments on the YouTube page.

How changes in religious affiliation impact US politics

Source: USA Today

A recent report from BBC cites Protestants are no longer a majority in the US. According to a recent Pew survey, only 48% identify as Protestants.  Coincidentally, NPR published a report that 20% of Americans now identify themselves as “religiously unaffiliated” or “Nones”.  According to the NPR article, there is little evidence to show this population will become more religious as they get older.

The implications of this shift from a Protestant majority and an increase in “religiously unaffiliated” population is politically significant.   The NPR article finds this growing group who are “religiously unaffiliated” are turned off by the religious-laden language used in politics and they heavily lean Democrat.

This population shift no doubt raises alarm to conservative Christians, who have held significant political clout. However, I believe this will only alienate them from the larger moderate and more secular voting public.  The BBC article points out that for the first time in our history there is not a a Protestant on the Republican Presidential ticket and there are currently no Protestant Supreme Court Justices.

South End Formaggio

One of my favorite shops in my neighborhood is South End Formaggio. It is a tiny shop stuffed from floor to ceiling full of delicious food, wine and beer, but it is best known for its exceptional selection of cheese and meats. I love this shop, but with only two other locations (Cambridge and NYC – Lower East Side) it may be impractical for you to pay a visit.

Gus Sparrow Glider

home furnishing

Sparrow Glider

After the home remodeling concluded this summer, furniture I’d had for nearly a decade needed to be updated.  The shopping spree which started in August has made October feel a bit like Christmas.  The pair of Sparrow Gliders ordered two months ago arrived this week.

The Sparrow Glider from Gus is upholstered in what they call cashmere carbon and it nicely complements the Carmichael Loft Sofa (also from Gus) upholstered in totem storm (honestly who names these fabrics).

Much more needs to be done, but the space is finally coming together.
