Romney’s foreign policy fumbles

RomneyConsidering the series of foreign policy missteps from  Romney’s campaign, I wonder if he regrets the resignation of Richard Grenell – his initial foreign policy spokesperson. Grenell was forced out in May because he is gay and Romney wanted to appease the Christian Conservatives he continues to pander to.  One cannot help but wonder if Grenell was still working for Romney if his foreign policy gaffes would have even happened.

– In July criticizing the London Olympic games just after arriving in London on the eve of the games starting.  More on this story here from FOX NEWS

– In August suggesting Jews are “Culturally Superior” to Palestinians.  More on this story here from Huffington Post

– In August omits any mention of War in Afghanistan at his acceptance speech at the Republican National Convention.  More on this story here from MSNBC

– In September asserting that Russia is America’s number 1 enemy; overlooking nearly a decade long war against our real public enemy – terrorism and terrorist organizations like Al qaeda.  More on this story here from US News & World Report

– In September his statements regarding the killing of US Ambassador in Libya results in admonishment from conservative peers. More on this story here from NYT

You reap what you sow Mr. Romney. You should’ve kept Grenell, because you look like a bumbling amateur right now.

So You Think You Can Dance

Twitch dancerOn Tuesday I was watching So You Think You Can Dance (SYTYCD for short). One of the performances included a former contestant who comes back periodically to dance with current contestants.  Anyone who has watched SYTYCD over the years will recognize Twitch.

I loved Twitch from the moment I saw him audition however many years ago on SYTYCD.  Here is a video of Twitch from a couple of years ago dancing with contestant, Kherington Payne.

The consequences of repealing Don’t Ask Don’t Tell

Repeal of DADT

Photo by: David Lewis from AP

Last week BuzzFeed collected more than 2 dozen images of the impact repealing Don’t Ask Don’t Tell (DADT) has had on our military.  You can see the full list of happy images by linking here.

These images must make those who opposed repealing the act seethe.  The thought that gay and lesbian service men and women no longer need to cower in the shadows or fret over being outed by a jealous or angry peer must seem like a gross injustice to them.

According to Senator Rick Santorum allowing this to happen is wrong and in his words a  “…social experimentation with our military and that is tragic” I beg to differ Senator Santorum; rather I find you and your political party tragic and I’m tired of your social experimentation.

Cinquecento Ristorante construction continues

Cinquecento RistoranteAs I was walking down Harrison Avenue Saturday morning to check out the South End Open Studios, I could hear saws buzzing and all sorts of activity emanating from The Aquitaine Group’s newest restaurant, Cinquecento.

The restaurant had opened its Harrison Avenue door to let in fresh air, and I couldn’t help but look in to see what was happening.  Rumors circulate the restaurant is looking to open before the end of the month but will likely not be ready until October.

The photos are from Saturday, September 15 2012 – click to enlarge.

Significant work remains but I’m very excited to see this space reopen. I wish the staff and The Aquitaine Group much luck.

South End Open Studios

The South End Open Studios was this past weekend.  The two-day event which draws thousands to the neighborhood, allows art collectors and enthusiasts to talk to local artists and visit galleries; all told – more than 200 studios and galleries are open.  In addition, artisans and specialty stores which comprise much of the retail space in the South End’s SoWa district (South of Washington) participated in the event this September.

Weather was perfect for this weekend’s art walk which included painters, sculptors, and designers who make jewelry, clothing, furnishings and more. Below are a few photos from a small number of the participating galleries and artists.

Is Boston Chops hiring

Yesterday, Eater Boston wrote a post entitled, Upcoming South End Restaurant to Focus on “The Cow”.  The post comments on a job posting on Craigslist looking for “Chef de cuisine, Executive Sous, Chef & Sous chef” who have “a strong understanding of the cow”.

Eater Boston’s article wonders out loud which of the new South End restaurants might be hiring for these positions, naming Estelle’s, BoMa , and Cinquecento.  However, my money is on Brian Piccini’s latest endeavor, Boston Chops, which is targeting a late November opening (pending construction).

Fart be gone

fart odor eaterOver the weekend I  received this photo via email from my sister Elizabeth with an exclamation and “LOL”.  A quick Google Search brought me to a page on Amazon.com called Fart Pads.  Who knew there was such a thing?

I wonder how many of these are sold as ‘gag’ gifts to friends and family. Ladies, the next time you are invited to another boring wedding shower I suggest you liven things up and slip this anonymously into the pile of gifts. I’d love to see people’s faces when this was unwrapped.

New hotel and residences coming to my hood

South End Mixed Use DevelopmentLooks like the Mayor and the Boston Redevelopment Authority  just approved a cool new mixed use building in space that is currently occupied by a parking lot in my neighborhood, the South End.

Located at 275 Albany Street, the development includes a 3-story parking garage, 19-story residential tower, and a 11-story hotel. I have no idea what micro style rooms means, but I’m just happy it will bring more people to the neighborhood.  The development will be just one block away from the Ink Block.

More about this project and others approved by the city of Boston here.

I do campaignShow your support for Referendum 74 in Washington State

Yesterday I wrote about The Seattle Times editorial team’s “I do” Campaign.  Washington State has a ballot initiative asking its residents to support same sex marriage.  To show their support, The Seattle Times has taken the unprecedented step to create a social media campaign supporting the ballot initiative.

Send me your “I do” photo – It doesn’t matter where you live

I may not live in Washington State, but I wanted to show my support and hope you will too. If you email me your photos holding this sign I’ll publish your photo.

Restaurant review: La Casa de Pedro

la casa de pedroCasa de Pedro: Fine Latin cuisine in Watertown, MA

This past weekend I had dinner at La Casa de Pedro, which describes itself as offering a true taste of Venezuelan hospitality and fine Spanish cuisine.  The restaurant is conveniently located next door to The New Rep Theatre where I saw their production of The Kite Runner.

Casa de Pedro is a warm and inviting restaurant with a nice patio for dining outside, a large bar and even larger indoor dining room.  Main plates range significantly in price, but dinner for two including a shared starter, two drinks and main plates cost $70.00 with tip; more than reasonable considering the portions and how delicious it was to eat.

We started our meal with calamari ($10.50).  No need to ask for lemon wedges as the lightly fried calamari was heavily seasoned with lemon juice which was nicely offset by the heat of the jalapenos. La Casa de PedroJust as we were finishing the plate of calamari our main plates were served.  The portions were surprisingly large but so savory we both finished our meals without hesitation.

Casa de Pedro Caraquena (above left) is $17.99 and includes chicken tenderloins, sirloin strips, and Spanish sausage sautéed with Spanish spices. The plate also included rice, beans and plantains.  The meat was flavorful, heavily salted and complemented my cold beer.

The Fish Tacos (above right) is $15.50 and was equally delicious albeit lighter. The three tacos filled with tilapia had a distinctly grilled flavoring was accompanied by rice, beans, fried yucca and plantains.

I will come back to Casa de Pedro.  It makes for the perfect place to grab dinner before seeing a show at the New Rep Theatre and who doesn’t love dinner and a show?  You can see Casa de Pedro’s full menu here.

Quote of the day: Mitt Romney and the 47%

Mitt Romney

Mitt Romney was videotaped without his knowledge at a fundraiser recently.  MotherJones, a liberal website, released the tape last night.  Here is an excerpt of what he said.

There are 47% of the people who will vote for the president no matter what. All right, there are 47% who are with him, who are dependent upon government, who believe that they are victims, who believe the government has a responsibility to care for them, who believe that they are entitled to health care, to food, to housing, to you-name-it. That that’s an entitlement. And the government should give it to them. And they will vote for this president no matter what…These are people who pay no income tax…[M]y job is is not to worry about those people. I’ll never convince them they should take personal responsibility and care for their lives.
