Opus Affair tonight

Opus Affair is a social group who meet each month around town.  They are a diverse group who share an appreciation for the arts community in Boston and want to see it grow and thrive.

Never been to an Opus Affair event? No worries, its a friendly group of people who range in age and profession, but all agree that going out, sharing a cocktail and chatting with people is the perfect way to spend a Monday evening.

Newspaper’s social media campaign supporting same sex marriage

Earlier this year I wrote about high profile businesses and entrepreneurs from the Seattle area who have donated significant sums of money for marriage equality in Washington. In July I wrote about Amazon founder Steve Bezos and his wife donating an astounding $2.5 million to support marriage equality in Washington.

Now the Seattle Times has taken the unprecedented step of launching its own social media campaign in support of same-sex marriage.  Want to show your support?  The newspaper is encouraging supporters to take photos of yourself, your partner or your family holding their sign and sharing it on Twitter or Instagram with the hashtag #IDo74.

The Kite Runner opens at New Rep Theatre

New Rep TheatreThe Kite Runner at New Rep Theatre

The Kite Runner, is a story written by Khaled Hosseini first published in 2003.  It became a New York Times best seller and was eventually adapted into a movie and a play.  The somber story centers around the life of a young, privileged Afghani named Amir.

The New Rep’s production will draw you in.  The narrative play opens in Kabul when Amir is a child growing up with his best friend and servant, Hassan.  Its a happy story, but by the time the first act closes you’ll have lump in your throat. The second act opens in America but when contacted by a family friend Hassan finds himself returning to Pakistan and Afghanistan where he must face his past, literally.

Performances run Wed thru Sunday until Sept 30th

I loved this story and I think you will too. This is a play that will elicit discussion and make you thankful to have the good fortune to grow up in a developed nation.  New Rep Theatre’s performances of The Kite Runner conclude on Sunday, September 30th. Performances run Wednesday thru Sunday each week and tickets may be purchased here

English lessons from BosGuy

Today’s word is Yummy. To make this easier I’ll use pictures to help with pronunciation of this very tricky word with a myriad of meanings.

Yum Meyum·my/ˈyəmē/ – ADJECTIVE

1. Delicious: “this is so yummy I could eat all of it

2. Highly attractive and desirable: “I picked up this yummy guy

Hmm… I wonder which one applies here.

New poll shows Warren leading Brown

President Obama Elizabeth WarrenLast week a poll taken by the Western New England University Polling Institute reported that Elizabeth Warren is now leading the Republican incumbent, Senator Scott Brown.

The lead is attributed to Warren’s prominent speaking role at the Democratic National Convention (DNC).  The lead would be welcome news to Warren and her supporters since prior to the DNC polls showed she was trailing Senator Brown.

Urban Grape South End opens this week

Urban Grape South EndLater this week, on Thursday – September 20th to be precise, the South End will welcome a new business to the neighborhood.  The Urban Grape will open a second location at 303 Columbus Avenue between Clarendon and Dartmouth Streets.

This wine shop, which has called Chestnut Hill home, first leaked they would be opening a second location earlier this year.  In recent weeks they have been sharing photos of the progress inside.

I have one thing to say to The Urban Grape, “Cheers!”

Brazil state of mind

I almost never travel in the summer. I wait all year for New England’s summer days filled with sun and warmth. However, with summer now a thing of the past, my mind turns to travel. It has been a few years since my last visit to Brazil, but plans are in the making to rectify that.

Eu tenho saudade Brasil.

Boston Freedom Rally 2012

Boston Freedom Rally 2012Yesterday was the 23rd Boston Freedom Rally.  This annual event has grown in popularity and the 2012 event on the Boston Common attracted more than 50,000.  I made my annual trek to the event to walk around and people watch.  There was a definite haze of smoke from the tens of thousands who were lighting up, but the crowd was friendly and subdued (with the exception of the speakers).  It always strikes me as funny how these impassioned speakers try to rile up a stoned crowd.

Most appeared to be enjoying a beautiful day outside with their friends.  Aside from the speakers, the festival included many items for sale, live music and of course plenty of food for everyone to fend off munchies.

This is the streaker who got away.

Peek a Boo

Not only is he athletic but he’s playful too.

However, before this game of peek a boo continues someone needs to take a bath. Where’d I put the soap.

Anderson Cooper

Kristin Chenoweth is adorable teasing Anderson Cooper about his summer.  Her cute comments result in Anderson addressing his decision to come out (again) this past summer.
