The Full Monty

Tonight I’m heading out of town to see The Full Monty at the Stoneham Theater.  This is based on the 1997 surprise hit movie that tells the tale of six unemployed, disgruntled steel workers living in Sheffield England. I remember seeing the movie at the Kendall theater and loving it.  Aside from the obvious nerves it must take to play one of the six men, it is always a risk to take a popular film and try to bring it to the stage.  I remain hopefully optimistic and look forward to attending a performance at a theater I’ve never visited before.

Have a great weekend

Swan boats return to Boston Public Garden tomorrow

Every city has their traditions and one of Boston’s is the Swan Boats which grace the Public Garden starting each spring.

This is an annual tradition spanning 135 years; started in 1877 by Robert Paget and still run by his family.

Romantics will be happy to read it was a love story which sparked the idea behind the swans. Apparently Mr. Paget was fond of “Lohengrin,” an opera in which a knight crosses a river in a boat drawn by a swan to protect his love.  I can recall being taken on these boats when I was a small child, and I will probably do the same with my nephews and nieces…like I said, its a tradition and Bostonians are big on traditions.

The photo is from Bill Greene of The Boston Globe. You can see all his pictures and read more about the Swan Boats by linking here.

Furry Friday

Hope this bit of ManCandy can distract you til the weekend starts.

BosGuy brain teaser

Give this week’s brain teaser a few minutes and I’m sure you’ll be able to  figure out the answer.  As usual, I’ll post the answer in the comments section in the afternoon.

I hope you enjoy this week’s riddle.

What gets wetter and wetter the more it dries?

What to buy a germaphobe

I have more than a few friends who would probably consider purchasing The Traveler’s Bed Bug Thwarting Sleeping Cocoon. According to the write up in the Delta Sky Mall catalog where I found this, “The durable polyester threads are impervious to bed bugs’ teeth.” Just reading that makes my skin crawl so I can’t imagine what a certified germaphobe might think.

Hillary Clinton: Texts from Hillary

Last week this photo of Hillary Clinton was making the rounds on Facebook, and I loved it the moment I saw it.  The image has inspired a rather funny blog worth checking out called Texts from Hillary.

Apparently Madam Secretary thinks the site is Hillary-ous (sorry that’s my pun).  She contacted the creators of the blog, met and posed with them recently.  You can read all about it in a fun article posted on NPR earlier this week.

Fitness update

In 7 short weeks June will be here. June = Summer in my mind and for that reason I’ve been working out with my trainer, Kris, twice a week.  He’s the maniac jumping over burning logs and covered in mud. He’s one part bad-ass; two parts great listener and fantastic motivator.

I try to schedule two one-hour sessions with with him each week. I know this is going to sound crazy, but spending this money is my way of pampering myself. I feel so much better on the weeks I get two solid work outs with Kris.  I do my part too by trying to get in a decent cardio 2-3 times a week but sometimes work won’t relent and my only physical activity is with Kris.

I’ve had conversations with several guys I’ve met through my blog, and I know finding time to get in a solid work out can be tough. A lot can be accomplished in 7-weeks if you modifying your diet slightly and get a couple of workouts in each week. Let me know how you are doing and we can chat off line to keep each other motivated. God knows I need as much help as I can get.

Buh-bye Philadelphia

Work brought me to “The City of Brotherly Love” more commonly known as Philadelphia.  Sadly this trip was all work and absolutely no play aside from a business dinner last night.  I have to admit I always enjoy when business brings me to Philly and I hope I have a chance to return soon. I’d love to check out the Gayborhood as I believe it is called.  Please send positive thoughts my way that I’m able to get out of Philadelphia on time.  My appreciation for this great city does not extend to their airport and the carrier US Air I’m sorry to say.

BosGuy on facebook

Is this a pathetic attempt to seek approval? Possibly, but I’ve been getting a fair number of “likes” on facebook so thought I’d say thank you. If you have an account on facebook, you can like me and follow me by linking here.

Lindsay Lohan

I absolutely fell in love with Lindsay Lohan years ago when I watched the remake of the Disney classic The Parent Trap, and I have enjoyed many of her films notably, Mean Girls.  However, it appears that Lindsay’s very public issues with chemical abuse have tarnished the lens with which we all view her.

This video which chronicles some 25 years in 60 seconds is cool to watch until the final few seconds.  The transformation is both startling and a caution against excessive plastic surgery.

Dusk in Boston

This is a picture of West Springfield Street (looking west) from Washington Street in Boston’s South End neighborhood at dusk on Easter Sunday.  In the distance you can see the dome of The First Church of Christ, Scientist, which is approximately a mile away.

Suddenly it makes sense

All of a sudden I see the appeal of soccer / football.

We don’t need health care reform

If air travel worked like healthcare

Of course health reform is unnecessary.  We’ve got it all figured out in the United States.  Let’s keep the system we have. You know how the saying goes, “you reap what you sow”.

Restaurant review: Equator

Equator is a family-owned and operated Thai restaurant in the South End near the corner of Washington and W. Springfield Streets that first opened in 2004 and has persevered but never prospered.

After making a few visits, I’ve concluded Equator’s misfortune is that its not remarkable, and there are better options for Thai just blocks away.  The good news is that if you are ever in a jam you can always get a table and that the staff is consistently polite and helpful.

Tom Yum Soup – Thai hot and sour shrimp soup $4.95Unfortunately the soup shown above lacked any of the heat and flavoring its name would imply and tasted more like broth with mushrooms and shrimp.  Dinner (shown below) proved to be more flavorful and my plate (lower left) did have the heat as I requested.

My dinner, a house favorite, was the Cashew Nut stir fry which I asked to be made spicy and be accompanied with tofu ($11.95). Unlike the soup, this plate had a bit of heat and did not disappoint. The other plate, another house favorite, Pad Thai ($10.95) was also satisfying.

Cashew Nut Tofu Stir Fry ($11.95)              Pad Thai ($10.95)Despite serving what I’ll refer to as mediocre Thai, Equator does provide consistently friendly service and is an affordable neighborhood option.
