Atlantis Caribbean Cruise

On Friday I flew down to Fort Lauderdale, and today a group of nine of us will join 5,100+ other men on the Atlantis Allure Caribbean Cruise.

I’ve never been on a cruise before and wonder what I’ll make of the experience.  I’m fairly certain it will be a memorable, and after I return, I’ll be sure to blog about it and share some photos.

In the days that follow, I won’t have access to the internet so I’m scheduling posts from some of my most liked / and commented upon posts over the past few years to fill the void while I’m “cruising” the Caribbean.

How to survive a Boston winter

Back in September I wrote my first How to survive a Boston winter blog post.  In that post, I encouraged people who live in colder climates to book a flight to a warm destination because airfares are (usually) cheaper if you make the reservation ahead of time.

Today I’m in Florida.  Sergio and I flew down yesterday, Friday, and we will be boarding a cruise that starts out of Fort Lauderdale tomorrow.  Having this trip to look forward to has made the month of January fly by, and when we return although I’ll probably hate the cold, I’ll be in a much better frame of mind.

If you are living in a colder climate – I hope you too have a trip to look forward to break up the winter months.  I’ll be sure to tell you all about this trip.

I wonder if this means that I need to sleep around with all those 99% protesters if the Occupy movement picks up again this spring. I hope not.

Leaving on a jet plane

This morning Sergio and I are flying to Fort Lauderdale to start our vacation.  We’ll relax poolside for the next two days at the W Hotel and be joined by a half dozen friends who arrive today and tomorrow before we all board the Atlantis Caribbean Cruise on the Allure.

I’ve scheduled blog posts that will publish while I’m away, but once we depart on the cruise I won’t be able to approve your comments until I return so please be patient, and as always thank you for visiting my little corner of the internet.

Urinal etiquette

Worth revisiting and completely safe to view at work although you may need to stifle a laugh or two.  The video actually ends shortly after 4 minutes.

Sh*t gay guys say…

I’m not sure I’ve said everything in this 75-second video but it certainly made me chuckle.  I think this might be more of a “West coast” gay vernacular.

I think I could come up with some pretty funny phrases guys in Boston and the Northeast are more prone to say. Words that come to mind “Provincetown” and “Boatslip.

Phrases you might hear locally, “He lives on the Red Line, I live on the Green Line; it wasn’t going to work.” and “Dorchester isn’t that far away.

What might you add to the list?

Larry O’Donnell on being a Liberal

I can’t say that I’m enamored with either political party at the moment, but I’ve never been ashamed to identify as a Liberal.  This image has been making the rounds on the internet so I thought I’d add my two cents and hop on the bandwagon.

BosGuy on being a Liberal:  I believe issues pertaining social justice trump the wallet; I believe that morality is best left to parents and out of our laws; and I believe the rights that Mr. O’Donnell references above are badges of honor that have also gone on to influence the world and make it a better place for everyone.

Happy hump day

Clare Danes comes to Boston (actually Cambridge)

Tomorrow afternoon, Clare Danes will receive the prestigious pudding pot and be named the 2012 Hasty Pudding Theatricals Woman of the year.  Those outside of the Boston area and not in theater may not be aware of this award which each year draws famous actors to Cambridge where they are teased (all in good fun) about bad roles then paraded down through Harvard Square.

Hasty Pudding Theatricals have presented their unique brand of student-written theater every year since 1844, the only exceptions being for World Wars I and II. This long running theater group of Harvard University has a distinguished list of male and female actors who have received the prestigious pudding pot.

Past female actors who have received this award include: 2011 – Julianne Moore,  2010 – Anne Hathaway, 2009 – Rene Zellweger, 2008 – Charlize Theron, 2007 Scarlett Johansson and many more. You can see the full list here.

Cathedral of the Holy Cross

I live just a couple of blocks from the Cathedral of the Holy Cross which is the heart of the Catholic Archdiocese of Boston.  Walking home this evening I snapped a few photographs of this church which according to Wikipedia is Gothic Revival Architecture.

The church which first opened its doors in 1875 is not significant, but it does inspire architecture enthusiasts to give pause, and I think it provides a lot of personality to the neighborhood.

UNH vs. Merrimack College

Above from left to right: my father, my brother Tim, my partner Sergio, me, and my brother-in-law Travis.

This past Saturday I went to see the UNH / Merrimack College hockey game. The evening out and hockey tickets were a Christmas gift from my father.  In lieu of buying us things for Christmas, he has started planning things we can do together, and I have to admit I far prefer having these “dates”. Each year its a guaranteed great evening.

Restaurant review: Ri Ra Portsmouth, NH

Ri Ra is located in the historic New Hampshire Bank building which dates back to 1803 and is in the heart of downtown Portsmouth, NH. Despite the classical revival architecture that includes a giant stained glass dome some 30′ above, the place feels very cozy and is a comfortable place to grab a drink or dinner. The menu is divided into starters and salads that range from $6-$12; main dishes from $14-$19; bar fare which is comprised of options like chips, wings and nachos that cost $7-$11; and simple fare (sandwiches and burgers) $10-$11.  In addition there are great happy hour specials that are available weekdays from 4:00-7:00pm.

Depicted below is Ri Ra’s Baked Mac & Cheese with grilled chicken ($18). The dinner came out hot on a skillet with so much food a food coma was all but guaranteed.  Below that is the Haddock & Chips ($17) which was very lightly battered and very satisfying with a dash of vinegar for additional flavoring.

Dining at Ri Ra is definitely more informal and relaxed and probably best for groups and friends rather than dates or special occasions. Our meals all arrived together, promptly and thumbs up were immediately provided by everyone as our group simultaneously devoured dinner.

Ri Ra has 11 other locations. You can where at, rira.com.

Brings a whole new meaning to the phrase “bad banana”

Men of Twitter

Each Monday I post #MenOfTwitter profiles of men who catch my eye and whom I think you may enjoy following. As always, suggestions for profiles to feature are welcome. If you’d like to follow me on twitter, you can find me @BosGuy. Below are this week’s #MenOfTwitter.

If so inclined, leave them a nice comment and start following on Twitter.

landrethneel (formerly BostonMuscle) This handsome guy had to change his profile on Twitter this week so if you like, switch to his new account.

Landy is a native Bostonian who moved to FTL to find his biological mother, and recently had success in locating her.  He says he has plans  to move back home to Boston but my advice would be to wait for winter to end first.  Such a handsome and friendly guy would be a welcome addition back to the Boston gay community.  Before any of that happens though Landy will run his first half-marathon in Miami later on January 29th so wish him well. #BostonHunk

BradleyTraynor – This native of Chicago now calls Minneapolis home and has lived there nearly 20 years.  Bradley is a lot more than just a handsome face (although that is tough to ignore). Don’t believe me? You can check him out online and on the radio waves.  He’s a contributor for Minnesota’s Lavendar Magazine and a regular radio host on myTalk 107.1 FM as well as co-host of Weekend Dirt on Saturday mornings. For those wondering… yes, he’s in a relationship. #HandsomeMidwesterner
