Lourdes – Belo Horizonte, Brazil

While I recognize that nearly none of my readership will ever visit Brazil’s third largest city, Belo Horizonte (B.H.), it is my partner’s home city and a place we’ve traveled to over the years.  B.H. or Belo for short, is a sprawling metropolis of more than 5 million.  While this publishes, I am currently in Florianopolis, but thought I’d share a bit about where I was last week.

When we visit family in B.H. we make it a point to come to Lourdes for dinner.  Depicted immediately below is the trendy o Dadiva Restaurant,  Oak Restaurant and Wine Bar and one of the desserts we tried at Oak (yes, I said “one of”…)

Belo Horizonte LourdesThere are many dining options here and in the surrounding blocks, which means there is plenty of pedestrian traffic and great people watching.   Main plates range between $25 – $35.

If one does find themselves visiting Belo Horizonte or has friends who live there, I would suggest dinner in Lourdes followed by a night out at the gay clubs / bars in neighboring Savassi.

Kranzky’s Korner: building muscle

How do you like the weekly Kransky’s Korner post? I hope it serves as a encouragement to help you eat healthier and get into shape. Think of it as a jump-start on your New Year’s resolutions.

With five weeks until the end of the year it’s time to ask yourself what are your fitness goals? The week prior to Thanksgiving we addressed weight loss so this week we’re focusing on building mass.

To Build Size or Mass
Focus on lifting 8-12 reps
Lift 2-4 sets for each exercise and 3-4 exercises per muscle group
Focus on 1-2 (3 if you’re adventurous) muscle groups
Allow yourelf to rest 1.5 – 3 minutes between your sets

Hypertrophy or size comes through repairing and building broken down and torn muscle fibers.  You should choose weights that are heavy enough that you struggle (nearly fail) to complete 8-12 repetitions. Focus on 1-2 muscle groups per workout so the proper attention is given, allowing the break down of fibers to occur to the maximum extent. Focus on working slowly through the eccentric part of the muscle contraction or the “lengthening phase” to really get a good break down. Your rest should be longer at this point to ensure your muscle are completely replenished before the next set so you can focus on the breakdown of muscle fibers with each set.

About Kranzky’s Korner: Kris is a Master Trainer at the Boston Sports Club in Boston, MA and Kyle is a Top Tier Trainer at Equinox in Pasadena, CA. The brothers have teamed up together to start a Fitness Consulting Group called Realm Fitness to inspire and educate others to reach there full potential.

Toys For Joys registration open

Toys for Joys BostonToys for Joys Boston is one of my favorite (and one of the most social) holiday parties held each December.  Thanks to the organizers, sponsors and the community this party donates thousands of dollars of gifts for children, but to attend this party you must register.  To tempt you into coming, I’ve included photographs from the 2011 Toys for Joys party in Boston, here.

Use the link below to register if you are planning to join.  This party always sells out so share the registration link with your friends.  Note that this year there is a $10 donation at the door in addition to the gifts.

Funny protest signs

Youth in Asia ProtestThese were two of my favorite “funny protest signs” from a recent Huffington Post write up by the same name.  I love the hypocrisy of those who quote random passages in Leviticus but ignore the majority of the text that are inconvenient like this handsome protester points out.  However, it is the idiotic couple below protesting euthanasia who truly concern me; I’m sure they vote.

More funny protest signs here.

Suddenly it makes sense

BosGuyLast weekend we left Belo Horizonte and we are now spending time relaxing by the beach.  It has reminded me how much I miss watching the swimming and diving events from the Summer Olympics in London.

Men and women shouldn’t live together

This Guinness advertisement was first produced nearly 20 years ago (1995) but it never aired, which is a shame because I love it.

Westin – New Balance “gear share” program

westin gear share programPhoto from: Sean Howe’s blog Behind the Bean

Last spring while staying at the Westin Copley Place I noticed signs encouraging guests to rent New Balance sneakers and work out clothes for just $5 to make it easier to squeeze in a workout while traveling.  It looks like the program was successful, because the hotel chain has announced it is now available in all 190 Westin Hotels.

The gear lending program will deliver New Balance sneakers and clothing to your room.  The sneakers come with socks that are brand new and yours to keep as well as fresh and clean clothing in your size. Upon departure, guests simply leave the items in their room in the mesh bag everything was delivered.

You may read more about this program at westinnewbalance.com.  I love this idea.  Would you be inclined to try out the program?

Santa Speedo fund raising

SSR Boston

Sponsor Sergio for this year’s Santa Speedo Run

I am currently visiting Sergio’s family in hot and humid Brazil where speedos are common but the cold is a distant memory. While we are away, I wanted to give Sergio a plug since he is participating in the Santa Speedo Run next month and needs to do some fundraising.

A modest donation of $10 or $25 to help him raise money for this year’s charity, Play Ball Foundation, would be greatly appreciated by him.

Cup of Jesus

Jesus coffeeYou just might be in a Catholic nation if a top selling brand of coffee is Jesus.

I know my Mom will be happy to read that each morning Jesus is helping me start my day in Brazil.

Still in Brazil

I a’m still enjoying life at a slower (and less connected) pace.  Regular blogging will resume in early December after I return to Boston.
