Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening
Poetry is not a form of prose often recited and it often goes over my head, but when I connect with a poem or on the rare occasion I write a poem it resonates in a way that is hard to describe. Here is a poem written by one of my favorite poets, Robert Frost.
Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening was first published in 1923.

Men in kilts
Much thanks to my buddy Gay Jim for pointing out BuzzFeed’s post, Shirtless Guys In Kilts. No disrespect intended to my friends Tony and Dirk who have many appealing photos of them in kilts but they didn’t make this list 😦
Can Boston sustain a new gay bar
Earlier this week I published my post, Boxers to open in Philadelphia. In that post I asked the owners to consider Boston should they continue to expand. Boston’s steady loss of LGBT centered businesses and in particular bars is not unique, but it just seems to be more problematic here where gay bar options are quickly dwindling to nil.
I would really like to see Boston have more gay bars. I don’t mean gay friendly bars; I don’t mean bars that are gay one or two nights a week; I mean a legitimate gay bar that is open 7-days a week and focused on serving Boston’s gay community; not bachelorette parties. More than 250,000 lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender call Massachusetts is home. The overwhelming majority of those live in Boston and surrounding communities. One would think that there is a business opportunity here, right?
What are your thoughts?
Bob Mizer and Tom of Finland exhibit at MOCA closes this week
This past November I wrote about this exhibit at MOCA in Los Angeles and I’ve had a few of you write to me to let me know that you’ve enjoyed it. I was recently contacted by the organizers and asked if I would remind readers (especially those of you in the Los Angeles area or those of you traveling there) that the exhibit closes this Sunday.
The MOCA exhibition features a selection of Tom of Finland’s drawings and collages, alongside Mizerâs rarely seen photo-collage “catalogue boards” and films, as well as a comprehensive collection of his groundbreaking magazine Physique Pictorial, where drawings by Tom were first published in 1957.

Chris Remmes runs for State Representative open seat
Last month I wrote about my friend Chris Remmes who was considering challenging Eugene O’Flaherty 2nd Suffolk State Representative seat. Recently Rep. O’Flaherty has announced he will be stepping down in February to join Mayor Walsh’s administration opening the door for a special election.
I wanted to give Chris another shout out and wish him luck. He’s lived in Charlestown for 20 years. He has been a longtime civic activist and currently serves as Charlestown’s Democratic Ward Chair. If you’d like to learn more or reach out and help Chris in his effort to win this open seat, please visit, remmes.org.
Appropriate ways to greet each other
This past summer I first posted a video from Max on how to cut off t-shirt sleeves. The video proved popular not only because of the practical advice but the fact that Max is rather attractive. You can watch the clip here.
I recently started following Max on Twittah and it turns out that even though he now lives in Southern California, he’s a Boston native. Who knew?
Anyway, I figured I’d feature his “Appropriate Greetings” video. Careful if you are in a work environment as there is some profanity. Bostonians may recognize his version of how we say “hello” which interestingly follows how the Irish greet each other around the 45 – 50 second mark.

The Theater Offensive is looking…
I love The Theater Offensive. This nonprofit works diligently to help present the diversity of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender lives. They use creative expression and performance to help break through personal isolation many in the LGBT feel, challenge the status quo, and help build a stronger community.
Job Opportunity: Development and Communications Associate
Recently I was made aware that they are looking for a new development and communications associate. The opportunity seems ideal for someone starting their career or with just a few years experience and I know how hard those positions can be to find so I wanted to give The Theater Offensive a shout out and encourage you to apply if interested or share with friends who may be interested.
Restaurant review: Ostra
Ostra opened late last year in space formerly occupied by Avila in the Back Bay. Executive Chef Mitchell Randall describes his food as “contemporary Mediterranean” with a focus on seafood; fear not there are options for meat lovers too. Ostra is Columbus Hospitality Group’s 5th restaurant in Boston and 6th in the area; it is a welcome addition to CHG’s collection of power dining options and sister restaurants (Mistral, Sorellina, Teatro, Mooo, and L’Andana – in Burlington).
The restaurant is beautiful with white walls offset by large, dramatic paneled photographs of the ocean. The caramel colored leather booth seats and hints of gold add interest, but I really liked the custom chandeliers inspired by jellyfish that float high above the dining room.
Ostra also features a beautiful baby grand piano (nightly entertainment is set to start in February in their lounge) next to a comfortable long bar that seats approximately 15. Main dishes at Ostra range from $28 to $90 (a dinner option for 2).
I started my first meal at Ostra (I will be back) with the Hamachi ($19). There is a hint of heat courtesy of jalapeño oil and pepper, but it is very subtle and offset by the citrus. I thought the starter was as visually beautiful as it was delicious to eat and I’d highly recommend it. Following our first plates, my friend and I continued to nibble on the warm bread and butter, while we chatted and sipped our cocktails. My friend tried the Malbec braised beef short rib ($42). This was unbelievably tender and flavorful – meat lovers take note.
I had been torn between a few options but our helpful (and distractingly handsome) waiter, Carlos, won me over with his description of the Native Cod ($36). The fish was cooked to perfection and the accompanying sweet garlic whipped potatoes and mushrooms really made the dinner special. The porcini mushrooms definitely added an earthy taste to the dinner and I made a concerted effort to include a bit of everything in each bite to enjoy all the flavors together.
Although I’m not much of one for ordering desserts in the name of ‘research’ we opted to try the Chocolate Hazelnut Cremeux ($13) – again a recommendation from our waiter, Carlos. As with all the plates that come out of Chef Randall’s kitchen, the dessert only entices you more when you see it so beautifully plated in front of you.
Ostra is a fine dining restaurant and a welcome addition to the Boston dining scene. Service from the moment I walked in to the moment the door was closed behind us was flawless. Our waiter was helpful without being intrusive and the GM, Alex Hage, whom I met when I walked in was so helpful answering all my questions about the restaurant and menu.
Another way to enjoy this new restaurant is to visit their lounge. Nightly entertainment will begin in February so patrons can enjoy a cocktail (or two), sample some of Ostra’s raw bar or share a plate while listening to the piano player.
Savannah Brown: What guys look for in girls
I love poetry. I think when you can connect to this form of creative prose the content of the expression becomes powerful. Savannah Brown’s poetry slam What guys look for in girls is one of those poems.
