This weekend I met up with two friends I don’t regularly get a chance to see. Back in the late 90s when I moved back to Boston from Atlanta we went out to see shows all the time, but as we got older and they started families that left less time for evenings out in Boston to catch a live show. Over time I all but stopped going to live shows at local clubs, but my friend Tom (far right in the photo above) still goes to shows on occasion so when he asked if I wanted to go to the benefit I said, absolutely and I’m so glad I did.
The lineup at Saturday night’s benefit included many artists and bands we often went to see in the late 90s. All of these musicians achieved a modicum of success back in the day but never the stardom that would propel them to larger venues, which meant for $20 we could get in and see an excellent live show in Boston. At the time Boston also had an excellent independent station, WFNX 101.7 FM which played these bands regularly. Going to the show on Saturday and seeing many of these acts gave me with a serious case of de ja vu.
Walking into the show on Saturday we were joking at how old the audience looked but by the end of the night we all left with smiles. The line up shown above also included a surprise performance by The Sheila Divine who still sound excellent, but it was actually Tanya Donelly’s band Belly (who I had all but forgotten about) who I thought were the best. I’m going to have to start checking out the lineups at my old haunts (at least the ones that remain).
In little more than a month the SoWa Open Market will return to Harrison Avenue, spanning several parking lots from East Berkeley to Waltham Street.
This year the market will be open both Saturday and Sunday, starting April 29th and run through October 29th. The market includes a local artisan market, farmers market, food trucks and last year’s popular craft beer garden.
New England Open Markets website does not make mention of their South End market which last year set up across from the Ink Block. However, their website suggests that they are planning a handful of interesting “pop-up” markets that will take place periodically throughout the summer, starting June 3rd.

Off the Wall will feature both local and renowned artists who will transform Ink Underground into a world of uplifting artistic expression. The pop up market is set for both June 3rd and September 23rd from 11AM – 5PM.

We Love Local is New England Open Markets salute to local artists and food artisans and entrepreneurs. The program will be hosted at Ink Underground on the corner of Traveler and Albany Street on both June 10th and September 9th.
Night Market at Ink Underground will take place on both June 24th and
September 16th from 5-11PM and will be illuminated by artistic light installations. The Night Market will take place at the new Ink Underground, on the corner of Travelers & Albany Street, in Boston’s South End.
Dale Stones’s amateur male burlesque showcase returns Saturday, March 25th to Club Cafe for its 5th installment. The show features entertaining comedy and insight from Boston burlesque performers. Hosted by Sirlesque Founder and Creative Director Dale Stones, featuring Willie Dumey, Femme Brulee, and Jolie LaVie as guest judges, and a cast of new male burlesque performers competing for the $100 grand prize.

Since my post from earlier this week, Middle aged men are more susceptible to feeling lonely,proved to be so popular, I thought I would also give a shout out to an article I read from Gareth Johnson earlier this week, 7 ways to meet guys that don’t involve Grindr or gay bars. In the article he offers up these seven suggestions to which I’ve offered my own commentary.
1. Talk to Strangers: I would particularly like to see guys from Boston take some cues from Gareth who opens the article suggesting we get comfortable with talking to strangers. Perhaps his point resonates with me so strongly because that is exactly how Sergio and I met. There happened to be lots of alcohol and some vintage Whitney blaring on a dance floor in Cambridge as well but we were both strangers and one of us (that would be me) stepped up and said hello.
2. Out at Work: His suggestions continue with being true to yourself at work by not being closeted. It still amazes me how many people I meet who feel that either they cannot or will not talk about their personal life at work out of fear of retaliation or not being promoted. But since many of us spend so much of our life at work it only makes sense to be open to sharing aspects of your personal life there.
3. & 4. Play Sport & Volunteer: Suggestions 3 & 4 respectively are to join a sports club / team or volunteer. Fortunately Boston offers great opportunities to do both. This past fall I shared about 20 different gay sports leagues you can join here and I regularly write about volunteering opportunities through Gay for Good Boston.
5. Go to the Gym: I jokingly refer to the gym as the gay man’s temple, but it’s a public space where you will meet and get to know people if you go regularly.
6. & 7. Network & Take Risks: I think of as putting yourself out there.
All of this is easier said than done, and I recognize doing this won’t guarantee you’ll connect and make friends or meet someone special but it is a start.

Although this video is now a few years old and the “new” Southie no longer resembles the stereotypes played perfectly by this cast of locals, it still gives me a good laugh. Once again after trolling the Internet for too long, trying to find a fitting photo for a Furry Friday that happens to fall on St. Patrick’s Day, I’ve come up short. I suppose nobody will complain that I’m reposting this Furry Friday.
This past week The Boston Globe had an interesting article that I had missed but my friend Dan had read and forward to me. The gist of the article written by Billy Baker is that many middle aged American men unconsciously are isolating themselves and over time, this is resulting in many feeling alone.
As the title of the article says, “The biggest threat facing middle-age men isn’t smoking or obesity. It’s loneliness.” Baker writes that after he spent time thinking about who he interacted with regularly he realized that he had been making work, his wife, family (even “me time” as he puts it) a priority, but over the years as family and job commitments increased, slowly but surely it was his “friends time” that had been pushed aside.
While many gay men are having families and the pressure to be there for their spouse and children is very real, I would like to think that our friendships for most gay men take on an added importance. However, when I look at my own life, I can honestly say that more than half the time I’m connecting with a friend the initial discussion goes something like this.
Me: Hi. How are you? I feel like its been ages. What’s new with you?
Friend: Life is good. I’ve been busy with work…. blah, blah, blah…
I get a lot of satisfaction from my work and it affords me a lifestyle that I really like, but I’d hate to think that I would value or put time at work ahead of time with friends. Staring at a phone or computer is a poor substitute for the connection one feels when you are with a friend nor are the memories going to resonate quite the same, so maybe we all need to evaluate how we are interacting with those closest to us. Are we defaulting to leaving a 5 word note on Facebook to wish a friend well on their birthday or are we picking up the phone, having a conversation to wish them the best and make plans to see each other? It’s really that simple.
Baker suggests regularly scheduling time with friends; either agreeing to a particular routine where you can meet or relying on clubs, sports, etc… that have a schedule you can commit to and be a part of to avoid letting long stretches of time pass before you see each other.
