Foodies rejoice: Mario Batali’s Babbo Pizzeria opens at Fan Pier today

Babbo Pizzeria BostonAccording to reports from The Boston Globe earlier this week, Mario Batali’s long awaited Babbo Pizzeria – an 8,700 square foot pizzeria and Italian tapas restaurant – opens for dinner today in their new space at Fan Pier in the Seaport District. If you can’t make it to dinner, Babbo’s Twitter handle Tweeted that they will open for lunch starting tomorrow at 11:30 a.m.

Babbo Pizzeria is at 11 Fan Pier Blvd in the Seaport District

According to a great article from The Boston Globe, the prices and menu is similar to Batali’s East Village, Otto Enoteca (a personal favorite of mine).  Pizzas range from an $8 marinara pizza to a $15 goat cheese pizza with pistachios, red onion, and truffle honey; small plates vary from $5 vegetable plates like cauliflower “alla Siciliana” to a three-cheese tasting for $11; larger plates range from grilled meats such as the $18 skirt steak with charred onions and aceto to pastas priced from $10 to $15.  The most expensive plate is a $35 chefs selection of grilled meats. pizzeriaI’ll give this place a few weeks before heading over to the madness that is certain to ensue, but I’d love to hear from you if you happen to stop in before I do. Let me know your thoughts. I’m a big fan of Batali’s Otto Enoteca and have high expectations for Babbo Pizzeria.

Jacques to ask Boston Licensing Board to change their liquor license

Gay, Drag, CabaretUniversalHub reported over the weekend that Jacques Cabaret  in Bay Village will go before the Boston Licensing Board today to get permission to change their liquor licence, which currently requires that they serve food.

Yesterday, Jacques had to explain to the same board why the Boston Police caught them on March 2nd not offering food to customers.  FYI – Jacques doesn’t even have a kitchen or food-preparation area, which begs the question, how did they get a liquor license that requires they serve food in the first place?

Jacques has a long, rocky history with neighbors who have complained about noise and loitering outside and nearby the cabaret.  I hope that they can manage to get this licensing issue straightened out quickly.  While I may not visit Jacques it is the only remaining drag bar in Boston, and  I would hate to see them penalized or worse over this issue.

Realm health and fitness tips from Kyle

Summer Time in Boston

Much thanks to Jack Sparacino for sharing this summer 2014 photo at R.C.C.

Summer is fast approaching, which means that you can no longer hide your poor decisions from the world behind a winter coat. Expect to see all that pizza you ate and cookies you had around Christmas to make an appearance this summer – on your ass and belly. UNLESS you change your ways, repent for your edible sins, and beg for forgiveness from the food Gods.

Consider this your warning – Boston Pride is just 7 weeks away. I dare you to go try on your trunks from last year, how do you look? Unless you’re some sort of cold and calloused soul who doesn’t get butterflies from the thought of Donuts and Burgers – or Burgers with donuts as the bun… mmhh…. then you probably don’t look as good as you potentially could.  Imagine how good it will feel to be the fittest guy at the pool. You have 7 weeks so get to work.

Undisclosed: The State v. Adnan Syed

Uncisclosed, SerialAttention Serial addicts! A new podcast, that starts today, will look more closely at a murder that happened in Baltimore more than fifteen years ago. The podcast called Undisclosed: The State v. Adnan Syed will reveal ‘new evidence and information’ in the 1999 murder of Woodlawn H.S. student Hae Min Lee and the subsequent trial and incarceration of her former boyfriend, Adnan Syed.

Undisclosed: The State v. Adnan Syed podcast

Like many, I first became aware of Hae Min Lee and Adnan Syed after listening to the incredibly addicting (and gripping) 12-part podcast called Serial. If you’ve not listened to the original podcast series, I highly encourage you to check it out, here.

Fenway Park home opener today at 3:05pm

Flashback Friday, Boston Red SoxThe Red Sox are off to a strong start in the first week of the 2015 MLB season. This past weekend they wrapped up their first series against the Jeter-less New York Yankees, where they beat them in dramatic fashion on Friday night, playing 19 innings in a game that lasted seven hours.

Today Fenway Park’s home opener for the 2015 Baseball season is today.  The Boston Red Sox will play host to the Washington Nationals who have struggled in their first week of play.  After this three game series, the Red Sox will play 22 consecutive games against American League East teams so I hope the team can maintain their intensity.

Etiquetteer’s Spring Madness of Pet Peeves

etiquetteerInspired by Jezebel’s 2014 Cake vs. Pie March Madness, and with the help of style- and manners-conscious Maria Hecht, my good friend and fellow Boston blogger Robert over at etiquetteer.com has prepared a tournament of Pet Peeves to find out what peeves you the most.

In one conference Etiquetteer has identified Weddings and Driving / Transportation Peeves, and in the other he focuses on Table Manners / Dining Out and General Peeved Peeves.  The survey will take about 2 minutes to complete and you’ll immediately see how your responses compare to the larger sampling of responses to date.

Etiquetteer’s Spring Madness of Pet Peeves

Bracket options include choices like:

Of these two wedding related pet peeves, which one makes you more nuts?
Lack of information about time, directions, etc.
or
No indication of dress code.

And…

Which of these two dining out related pet peeves heat you up more?
Texting at the table.
or
Last minute cancellations.

Feel free to share with your friends to compare your pet peeves.  The winning Pet Peeve will be announced on his blog on Wednesday, May 6, 2015.

Obama recognizes LGBTQ advocates in Jamaica and then shoots rainbows from his hand

ObamaAs with all two term Presidents here in the US, Barack Obama, continues to be an incredibly divisive figure. Some demonize him while others build him up.  I fall into that second category.  There are many reasons I view Obama fondly but perhaps none have been more influential than his decision to finally “come out” in support of LGBT rights.  Obama took that message of acceptance and equality on the road this past week when he visited Jamaica.  The Advocate has a great article Obama Isn’t Quiet About LGBT Rights, Even in Jamaica Trip

One of my favorite blogs, OMG Blog, was one of many to share the funny photograph from Obama’s visit to Jamaica. I’ve posted the photo above, with the OMG Blog’s headline, Obama recognizes LGBTQ advocates in Jamaica and then shoots rainbows from his hand. Let’s hope Obama’s words will help reshape the dialog in Jamaica. I would some day like to visit that island but it is one of many destinations I will avoid both for personal safety reasons as well as to boycott because of how they treat their LGBTQ community.
