Restaurant review Cinquecento

CinquecentoIt has been quite awhile since I last wrote a restaurant review of The Aquitaine Group’s Cinquecento, but earlier this month Sergio and I grabbed dinner at the bar and we had such a good time I wanted to write about it.

Cinquecento has been successful since first opening in 2012. It probably helps that they have ample free parking, a nice patio (for the warmer months) and is easily accessible from the Mass Pike and I-93.  However, that only gets you so far if you don’t have good staff and a talented kitchen – fortunately they have it all.

Italian Restaurant bostonThe menu is exclusively Italian as you might imagine with antipasti, soups and salads ranging in price from $10-$17; homemade pastas $22-$29; fish & meat plates $26-$38. On our recent visit we started dinner with the Burrata con Pistachio ($13.75) as well as the Steak Tartar ($15.75). The Burrata was cool and creamy and paired nicely with the soft figs, creating a surprisingly nice combination of sweet and creamy textures and flavors.

Cinquecento BostonHowever, I was most surprised by the Steak Tartar that was recommended.  The cubed steak was savory and would make for a great option if you want to come in for a snack.  The plate would pair equally well with wine or beer.

Italian restaurant BostonFor dinner Sergio ordered one of his favorite plates, the house made Gnocchi ($24.50) which is shown above, and I splurged, ordering the Aragosta Arrosto ($38.50) shown below.  I had thought I was ordering the lobster and pasta in a fra diavolo sauce but the Aragosta Arrosto was more flavorful than spicy with only a hint of pepper.  Those looking for more heat to the sauce should probably make such a request when ordering.  Having said that, the dinner exceeded my expectations. There was plenty of lobster from the tail and it was cooked perfectly. The pairing of the rich sauce, lobster meat and homemade pasta was so good that Sergio repeatedly poached food from my plate when I wasn’t looking.

Italian restaurant BostonIf you would like to try Cinquecento, I highly recommend making reservations for dinner on weekends. On weekdays you can usually get seats easily enough as a walk in at the bar or in the dining room.  Cinquecento is located at 500 Harrison Avenue in the South End.

Realm health and fitness tips from Kyle

Kyle Realm and Fitness tips TRX workoutWork out of the week: TRX.

TRX is one tool that every fitness freak should have in their gym bag. Due to its unique stimulus and ease in which you can adjust the difficulty of each exercise, I have made the TRX one of my got-to tools in workouts for clients and myself.  TRX is unique in that you can hit every part of your body and scale each exercise in difficulty without adding an additional load or more tools.

This also makes for the perfect stocking stuffer and can help hold us to our cliche new years resolutions to eat better and work out more in the New Year. (Expect some TRX workouts/challenges to be posted in the future.)

What you pay in Boston neighborhoods per square foot

Curbed Boston, Boston Real Estate

Average condo sales prices per square foot

Last week Curbed Boston posted this image from the Collaborative Companies which shows the average condo sales prices per square foot in a number of Boston neighborhoods and surrounding towns.

Laura Ahmes-Gollinger from the Collaborative Companies explains in the post how this is impacting younger would-be buyers and renters,”The effect of this migration causes a gentrification of these neighborhoods as these new buyers (and renters) demand the residential infrastructure necessary to support their live/work/play convenient urban lifestyles. Somerville is a great example of this with the huge foodie scene, extension of the green line in planning, and the major plans for development and residential housing that we will see in the coming years. In contrast, foreign buyers and empty-nesters will continue to live in the heart of the city and are willing to pay high prices for these amenity-rich, full-service, maintenance-free lifestyles.”

The map makes Southie  still look like a deal – that is if you can still find any since inventory is snapped up in hours.  You can read the full article here.

Skating rink comes to City Hall Plaza

Boston ice skating rinkThere seem to be conflicting reports about The city of Boston “Winter’s Landing” in City Hall Plaza.

Earlier this month it was reported that Winter’s Landing would include an Olympic size skating rink called Frozen Harbor as well as a 2-story 20,000 square foot bar called The Polar Bear. However, conflicting reports after the story broke made it sound like permits and rumbling from neighbors may impact the bar, The Polar Bear, from opening.  Time will tell and I’ll be sure to share more when I learn about it.  You can stay up to date on everything that is happening with Winter’s Landing on their Facebook page,  facebook.com/WintersLanding.

BosGuy takes the Nerium challenge

NeriumChristmas came a bit early this year – My Mom signed Sergio and I up to receive a few months of this “age-defying” skin cream called Nerium.  I have to admit I’m not much of a product guy, but last month my Aunt asked me try it for free for one week so I did. I was surprised by the results, but after the free trial ran out I didn’t think much about it until it showed up at my door this week.  Apparently my Mom loves Nerium too and after hearing me comment how surprised I was by its affects she signed us up to receive it for a few months (Thanks Mom!).

I just snapped this photo and aside from thinking my two-day scruff is pathetic and I look a bit tired, this is an accurate depiction of my complexion.  Let’s see if I can stick to the nightly regimen of washing my face and applying the night cream.  I’ll post another photo in a couple weeks to see if there are any visible changes.

If you are struggling with what to buy for that guy / gal who already has everything maybe this is a good option too.  Nobody I know would be upset for offering them a chance to have younger looking skin. If you’re intrigued you can check it out here:  Margie Silva: Nerium.

Ink Block in Boston’s South End now renting

Ink Block, South End residential development, Boston Herald BuildingEarlier this week I had the opportunity to meet and talk to Ted Tye, Managing Partner at National Development, the firm behind the South End’s Ink Block.   In their temporary office across from the Ink Block, he showed me their plans for the new development and hinted at more news to share after the new year.

Ink 1 & 2 will open Feb 1, 2015 and are offering 1 month free rent for all 1 year leases and 6 weeks free rent for all 18 month leases.

Whole Foods is scheduled to open in just a few weeks but Ted was mum about giving an exact opening date in January.  Don’t worry about the bad weather since 100+ parking spots are reserved for the store.  In addition the Ink Block will offer cool amenities including: underground connectivity to Whole Foods so one needn’t go outside in bad weather; a new gym; pool and outdoor function space to enjoy and host parties.  Also look for a new Hubway station and parking for a couple of ZipCars.

When speaking to the team at National Development they were keen to impress upon me their desire to leverage their commercial space for new restaurants (non-chains) that can provide more affordable dining options.  They want restaurants because they would like to have tenants that will be open after normal business hours to avoid having the block go dark and to encourage more pedestrian traffic.

Barcelona South End now open

Boston, Spanish Restaurant, TapasBarcelona South End quietly opened their doors last night and flipped the on switch to their new Facebook page which you can like here.  Sergio and I visited the invite only soft opening earlier this week, which I wrote about in my post, ¡Hola! Barcelona Wine (South End).

Barcelona South End opens at 3 pm 7-days a week but check back after they have been up and running for a bit because Jason Boske told me that he loves brunch.
