Realm health and fitness tips from Kyle

Kyle realm health and fitness tips5 Tips to make sure the Turkey is the only sweaty, thing with a belly full of stuffing.  Follow these tips to ensure that you eat more of the right things on thanksgiving, and less of the bad.

  • Make your first plate nothing but Meat and vegetables – This will make sure you get filled up with low calorie and high nutrient foods first, and will have minimal room left over for the bad stuff.
  • Drink at least 1 large cup of water per plate.  This will not only help keep you full, but also remain hydrated through the inevitably high amounts of salt that you will be consuming.
  • Sugar free pie-If you must have pastries, eat the sugar free one or bring one to the gathering. Anyone with diabetes will love the company, and you can feel a little less guilty while still enjoying the delicious fruits.
  • Get in a KILLER workout in before the festivities begin.  This can be a quick trip to the gym, a game of touch football, or the workout listed in the last post. EARN YOUR FEAST.

Don’t stress, be thankful. Be health conscious, not obsessive and stressed over every calorie. This will put you in a shitty emotional state and actually lead to more weight gain. Relax, be happy, and give thanks!

25 Years ago this month

gay flagTwenty-five years ago in November 1989,  Governor Michael Dukakis signed a bill banning discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation in housing, employment, credit, and access to restaurants and other businesses.  It may be hard to appreciate this milestone but this was an amazing victory for our community and would distinguish Massachusetts as a gay rights leader in the nation.

With the stroke of the pen the Massachusetts Governor ended a nasty 17-year battle and our state became only the second in the nation to pass a law protecting the employment and other rights of gays and lesbians.  The Boston Globe has a great article addressing this major milestone worth reading, A key moment in gay rights fight

South End restaurant Union Bar & Grille to close

Aquitaine Group, Boston, South EndBig changes are in store for one of Aquitaine Group’s signature south end restaurants. Effective January 1, 2015 Union Bar & Grille, which first opened eleven years ago in the autumn of 2003 will close.  Aquitaine Group, which owns Union will retain the space and reopen a new restaurant under a new name with a targeted opening for April 2015.  There is no information about the new concept, menu or who will help run the re-branded space.  However, the Aquitaine Group understands the competitive South End restaurant industry better than most and have an impressive track record.

Aquitaine Group, South End restaurant, SoWaA lot has changed since October 2013 when Union opened.  They were one of the first restaurants in the emerging SoWa district of the South End. Despite the fact that earlier that year Wilkes Passage and Rollins Square had opened, the restaurant scene in the South End didn’t cross over Tremont Street with but a few exceptions. Union’s presence with their gourmet, house ground burger and 10k Tuna changed all that and shortly after more restaurants followed.

I have a lot of fond memories of Union but the restaurant has lost its way and newer restaurants nearby like The Gallows and Boston Chops have proven to be tough competition for a restaurant that has not been updated in over a decade.  I look forward to the new space when it reopens in the spring of 2015 and wish them all the best.

Frog Pond skating rink is now open

It’s official – The Frog PonFrog Pond ice skatingd on the Boston Common opened today at 10 a.m.  If you are looking for something different to do and want to get outside, head over to the Boston Common and skate under the stars.  While I’m not much of a skater, a half hour or so of ice skating seems like a great date night option; guaranteed to provide great people watching, some good laughs.  Follow up the skating by grabbing a hot cocoa or hot toddy in one of the surrounding neighborhoods: Beacon Hill, Back Bay and Downtown Crossing.

The Frog Pond rents skates for $10 and the rink is open until 10PM tonight.  The rink opens daily at 10AM but the hours do vary so check their website for the details at www.bostonfrogpond.com.

Nobody is that good looking

GrindrNobody is good looking enough for me to be able to get beyond someone this dumb. I’m flummoxed by both his confusion of the Middle East and a region of the US as well as his fourth grade-level spelling of the country Egypt.

Boston needs more theater space

Fringe theater, Boston

Gold Dust Orphans perform “Jesus Christ, it’s Christmas” at Ramrod nightclub            December 4-21, 2014

Last week’s Boston Sunday Globe Ideas section had a large editorial piece entitled Arts everywhere.  It included articles praising and supporting the city’s commitment to further invest in the arts scene.  It also included some novel concepts including a great piece by Peter DuBois, artistic director for Huntington Theatre Co who calls for more theater space for what he refers to as “fringe theaters” and I couldn’t agree with him more.

Boston’s local theater scene is in the midst of a Renaissance.  The quality of performances, the variety of shows and the depth of talent is better now than I can ever recall.  However, that ingenuity and the audacity that these ‘fringe’ theater companies provide needs to be nurtured.  DuBois suggestion that the city needs to streamline permitting to create short-term ‘pop-up’ theaters and to provide tax incentives to landlords to open up under-utilized space for makeshift art venues is spot on.  The closure of The Factory Theater (in the Piano Factory) earlier this year only highlights the plight of these smaller, edgier theater companies.
