Throwback Thursday

TBT I enjoy looking at the old photographs people share each Thursday on sites like Facebook and Twitter but I’ve yet to include any of myself. However, I couldn’t resist the temptation to share a photo of this contraption which is outside my temporary office while I’m visiting NYC.

Marriage equality “tipping point”

marriage equalityAs the nation gets more accustomed to referring to “gay marriage” and “same sex marriage” by it’s proper name, marriage equality, those barely concealed homophobic laws enacted in the first decade of the 21st century banning gays and lesbians from marrying, seem to be falling faster than ‘Born Agains’ at a baptism. Erik Eckholm from The NY Times wrote an excellent piece this past weekend, Wave of Appeals Expected to Turn the Tide on Same-Sex Marriage Bans, that is worth reading.

Eckholm writes, “Legal experts say the country is entering what one called a “marriage spring” and predict that several of the circuit courts, which hold sway over a group of states, will rule that state laws limiting marriage to a man and a woman are unconstitutional.”

Give the article a read if you missed it and are interested in this sort of thing. It is brief and very easy to follow. You can read it here.

If Beyonce’s “Drunk In Love” was released in the 1940′s

How cool is this video?  Scott Bradlee has created a vintage cover of Beyonce’s hit song, Drunk In Love with the help of Cristina Gatti who sings in front of a 5 piece band that replicates the big band sound that was so popular before rock & roll in the 1940s.

Take a listen and tell me what you think. I loved it.

Restaurant review: NoPa Kitchen + Bar

Washington DC DiningNoPa, which opened in the spring of 2013, is a 160-seat American brasserie named after it’s location (just north of Pennsylvania Avenue). When you walk in from the street you’ll first notice NoPa’s long bar to the left of the host station.  On the opposite side is NoPa’s main dining room, which offers a more quiet, intimate opportunity to enjoy Chef Greg McCarty’s cuisine.  While the menu is fairly extensive there is a noticeable nod to seafood.

NoPa’s menu is divided into several sections, but the charcuterie, soups, salads and appetizers range in price from $12-$18 and main plates range from $18-$34.   I started dinner with hamachi tartare that came with  a soybean coulis and ginger vinaigrette for $14. I have to admit the hamachi was good but I felt like it was in a pool of vinaigrette and might have opted for something else had I realized this before I ordered it.nopa washington d.c.Fortunately the Chilean Seabass with Wasabi Caramel, Japanese Eggplant, and a Sweet Potato Purée for $28 was fantastic. The fish was deftly seasoned and had a slightly salty and crispy texture on the outside. It was perfectly cooked and paired nicely with the sweet Japanese eggplant and wasabi.  This is the kind of plate I would order again and again and comfortably suggest to anyone who enjoys Seabass.

NoPa is located at 800 F Street, NW in Washington, DC and is open for lunch and dinner on weekdays, dinner only on Saturdays and for brunch and dinner on Sundays.  Reservations are strongly recommended.

BosGuy happy to be serving…

Boston LGBT blogThis hobby of mine has turned into a borderline obsession but one I feel lucky to be able to pursue in my off time.  I’m not a professional outlet like some of the LGBT media here in New England. Much of what I post comes from readers who share information with me rather than news feeds that report the same information on a dozen or more national blogs. I try to keep a local flavor to the majority of my postings so if there is something you’d like me to post, let me know by contacting me on Twitter, FacebookGoogle+ or email me (bosguymail@gmail.com).

My blog’s outreach has grown significantly this past year, and I’d like to leverage that to share information about LGBT life in New England to help make our community a more welcoming and fun place.

Breakfast Club: 30 years ago today

Breakfast ClubWant to feel old? Thirty years ago today, Andrew Clark (Emilio Estevez), Brian Johnson (Anthony Michael Hall), John Bender (Judd Nelson), Claire Standish (Molly Ringwald), and Allison Reynolds (Ally Sheedy) were all supposedly serving a weekend detention at Sherman H.S.

The Breakfast Club was actually released in February 1985 so the 30th anniversary of the film’s release is still a year away but I couldn’t resist sharing when I saw this making the rounds on Twittah.

Boston Pride week theme: Be yourself, change the world

Chandler Street Block PartyBelieve it or not, June is not that far away and the Boston Pride Committee late last week announced that the 2014 Pride Celebrations theme will be:  Be yourself, change the world.

Boston’s Pride Committee wants you to nominate this year’s 2014 Parade Marshals.  The Parade has two categories: Grand Marshal and Honorary Marshal, which is only given posthumously.

Boston Pride Grand Marshal nomineeI’m still not certain who I’ll nominate for the 2014 Parade Marshal. I would love it to be someone with ties to Boston, but that isn’t a prerequisite and for that reason, I’m contemplating Michael Sam because of his brave decision to come out.  However, I’m not 100% decided on this.

Boston Pride Marshal nomineeI will nominate the late, Nelson Mandela for Honorary Marshal. Despite his inaction to help prevent the spread of AIDS when he led South Africa he ultimately came around to champion prevention and education efforts and he certainly was true to himself and changed the world.

Submit nominations by emailing the nominees name and contact information, along with how they best represent this year’s theme, to Nominations@BostonPride.org.  The deadline to send a nomination is April 15th.

BosGuy rant

RepublicansAs the Crimean crisis has evolved it seems like some Republicans have been making rather odd comments. Last week The Daily Show pointed out how Bill O’Reilly, Rudy Giuliani and Sarah Palin (among others) have been publicly praising Putin’s “strong leadership”.  These comments seem to coincide curiously with more conservatives deriding President Obama’s “weak leadership”.  Has the world is suddenly gone upside down? Conservatives are usually hyper-patriotic and more likely to demonize countries like Russia than admire them from afar; let alone publicly proclaiming America as a wimp.

I can appreciate disappointment in Presidential leadership (I’m still traumatized by eight years of George W. Bush) so I won’t judge these conservative critiques of Obama too harshly. However, it does seem odd to deride your own country’s leadership while simultaneously “admiring” Putin.

I will admit I’m no expert on foreign affairs or the Crimea, but I don’t understand why America should be considered the primary check to Putin’s ambitions.  Russia’s aggression is happening on Europe’s turf – if anyone should be playing tough it should be Europe. Russia’s economy is far more tied to Europe and European markets than America.  It is the 21st Century and I’d like America to retire from policing the world and let the rest of the world community step forward and start to take more responsibility for policing itself.  If that is perceived as “weakness” then so be it. I’d prefer to focus on “strengthening” America.

Weekend shopping: Boomerangs and Gilt City Boston

Boomerangs ShoppingStarting last Thursday, AIDS Action Committee’s Special Edition thrift shop, Boomerang’s South End, hosted their new spring, special edition sale.  Then on Friday and Saturday Gilt City Boston hosted their spring warehouse sale at The Revere Hotel. I’ve included a few photos from the Gilt City Boston sale this past weekend.

Gilt ShoppingGilt City ShoppersWhile the sheer volume that Gilt City Boston had for shoppers looking for bargains was impressive, Boomerang’s South End spring collection is still available so check it out at 1407 Washington Street.
