Bob Mizer and Tom of Finland exhibit at MOCA

GayThe Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles is the first American museum exhibition devoted to Bob Mizer and Touko Laaksonen (a.k.a. “Tom of Finland”).  The exhibition features a selection of Tom of Finland’s drawings and collages, alongside Mizer’s rarely seen photo-collage “catalogue boards” and films, as well as a comprehensive collection of his groundbreaking magazine Physique Pictorial, where drawings by Tom were first published in 1957.

The exhibit opened earlier this month in Los Angeles and runs through January 26, 2014.  Do you live in Los Angeles or have plans to visit in the coming weeks? You may want to check out this exhibit.  I would love to see something like this come to the ICA Boston. More information is available on MOCA’s website here.

Chef BosGuy

Taste of Boston BosGuy and Frenchie

I’m a fairly good cook thanks to my Mom who always encouraged me in the kitchen and I actually cook several homemade meals every week.  I know a lot of people think all I do is eat out, but I do enjoy cooking.  For example, this weekend I roasted a bunch of veggies, made a ridiculous amount of what turned out to be delicious red sauce, approximately 18 meatballs and one of my better eggplant Parmesan.

Chef BosGuy

I make this sort of thing regularly through out the Fall and Winter. It is my comfort food. Do you cook?  What do you make regularly?

It is Wednesday…

handsome guyI know that I’ve made this Mean Girls reference in the past, but I have to admit I never really tire of it so expect more in the future. It is one of my favorite things about Wednesday.

Play me I’m yours

Starting in late September 75 pianos were placed around Boston to commemorate the 75th Anniversary of the Celebrity Series of Boston. Today The Boston Globe posted this time-lapsed video that shows some of those pianos. Makes me miss having those pianos around.

Restaurant review: PICCO

picco bostonPICCO is an acronym of sort that stands for Pizza and Ice Cream Co. This affordable South End restaurant serves up delicious pizzas, home made ice creams (flavors change daily) as well as a host of other pastas, sandwiches and salads that are all affordably priced.

In their initial review, The Boston Globe referred to PICCO as, “A destination pizzeria disguised as a neighborhood joint, Picco tempts even the most persnickety foodies with delicate brick-oven crusts and top-drawer toppings…” Although that review is several years old, PICCO’s food remains consistent. While service fluctuates depending on the night and staff, their menu and price point make it one of the better casual dining options in the South End.

South End Dining

Neapolitan pizza chopped tomatoes, fresh mozzarella & basil $20.00

The Neapolitan pizza shown above remains one of my favorites at PICCO.  Served slightly crispy with the mozzarella still bubbling, it takes a bit of restraint not to pick up a slice right away.  The pizza smells of slightly burnt crust and basil when it is first served and is large enough to share with another.

PICCO Boston Ice Cream

Small ice cream sundae $5.00

What would a visit to PICCO be without sampling some of their ice cream?  We shared a small ice cream sundae opting for the vanilla, pistachio & brownie ice cream with oodles of hot fudge sauce and whipped cream.

PICCO is located is at 513 Tremont Street, Boston in the South End. They open at 11:00 am daily.

2013 Cupid’s underwear run

Cupid's Underwear RunHave you heard about Cupid’s Underwear Run? It is a 1-mile charitable run hosted in 28 cities – including Boston for the first time – to raise money for The Children’s Tumor Foundation.

Saturday, February 15th / Race Time: 12:00 PM

Hosted in the heart of winter, organizers are hoping 1,000 Bostonians are crazy enough to run through the streets of Boston in February.  I think organizers will find there is no shortage of people only too eager to run around the city in their underwear no matter the temperature.

Registration for Cupid’s Underwear Run is $30, but if you’re not much of a fund raiser, no worries because this need be your only expense.  However, if you fund raise more than $250, you will receive a VIP pass to a post-run party w/ open bar. There are additional goodies provided to those who fund raise even more. Sound like fun but don’t live in Boston? Visit www.cupidsundierun.com to see if your city is hosting a Cupid’s Underwear Run.

Addicted to pasta

PastaSince the SoWa Farmer’s Market opened in May I’ve been purchasing homemade pastas from Valicenti Organico every Sunday but sadly the market closed at the end of October. I’m addicted and my homemade red sauce tastes so much better when paired with fresh pasta.

Where do you buy fresh pasta and what is your favorite?

Take the bus

I love this commercial to encourage use of public transportation.

Veteran’s Day

Veterans DayIt is Veteran’s Day in the United States today.  This isn’t my favorite holiday because it tends to remind me how often our country has resorted to military use.  However, one cannot deny the commitment and courage of the men and women of our military so I wanted to take a moment to say thank you to my Dad and all of the other veterans for their service to our country.
