Smile and say hello

Last night I was out having a drink with friends and happened to meet these two lovely ladies who work together over in the Fenway.  I feel like a schmuck because no sooner did I arrive home than I realized I’d forgotten their names.

The fact that I’m a schmuck shouldn’t take away from the point of the post, which is even if you are out with friends smile and say hello to people. Despite what you think, most people are actually very nice, and these two ladies are perfect examples.  I hope I bump into them again.

Making a friend always starts with “hello”.

Amtrak does it better

Amtrak

My friend Ben pointed out a good article from Boston Magazine’s blog entitled, Why Amtrak is Better than Flying.  I regularly visit NYC and often use the high speed train, Acela, from Amtrak on my visits.

According to the post, Amtrak accounts for 54% of the air/rail trips between NYC and Boston and 75% of trips between NYC and DC.  The reasons are easy to understand, the faster service of Acela, being treated like a person, and more reliable on-time service all help.

The fact that my 6’1″ frame can comfortably sit in the seats is another perk.  I only point this out after reading The Boston Globe article from Monday about airlines reducing legroom, Airlines cut deeper into standard legroom.

Certainly, train travel could be improved – notably between Boston and NYC where the term “high speed” sometimes is more in theory than reality – but hopefully with more funding that will happen shortly.  As for air travel, there is nothing on the horizon that gives me hope that the experience will get better.

Don’t laugh… he probably votes.

Suddenly it makes sense

Is it just me or does the combination of the facial expressions on these two players, their body positioning and the headline to the left seem to all say “porn”?

This post seems to be in keeping with my previous suddenly it makes sense posting from last week.  How did I miss this overtly sexual  imagery when I was in high school? I’m certain I would have played more sports then.

Codzilla and the nephews

The definition of “uncle” should be parenting without any of the hang-ups, expenses or disciplining required.  Today I’m relishing in that role. Sergio and I are taking my two nephews Jack and Austin on Codzilla.

Codzilla is a large boat that has a giant, ravenous looking Cod painted along its side.  The ride will take us on a trip through Boston harbor for approximately 45 minutes at speeds of up to 40 mph. Seems like the perfect way to spend a summer afternoon with two boys age seven and nine. I can hardly wait to see their expressions.

Here is a recent photo of the three siblings.  Abby will sit out the boat ride with Mom.

The Kinsey Sicks

San Francisco’s dragapella beauty shop quartet just posted this humorous ditty on YouTube and I couldn’t help but share it.

The Kinsey Sicks are currently touring.  Sadly, they will not be in Boston this fall but you may see the full calendar of tour dates here.

Vintage gay photographs

A blog I’ve discovered online is the Winger Jock blog, which first got my attention with the recent post, 100 Years of Gay Couples, it posted last week.

The post includes 19 other pictures of gay couples spanning the last century and as Pierre from Winger Jock Blog says, “Yes, we have been around forever.

Congressman says rape victims punish unborn if they get an abortion

Republican Congressman Todd AkinOn Sunday Republican Congressman Akin who is running to win a Senate Seat from incumbent Sen. Claire McCaskill in Missouri said of pregnancy caused by rape. “If it’s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down… But let’s assume that maybe that didn’t work or something: I think there should be some punishment, but the punishment ought to be of the rapist, and not attacking the child.”

It is precisely comments like this and the crazy culture that is not only endorsed but often applauded by Republican leaders that leaves me wondering 1) How does this party expect to be more than a regional player moving forward 2) Why is this an issue? The comments come across tone deaf and misogynistic at the least and frightfully fanatical; something one might hear in a theocracy rather than a democracy based on individual liberties and separation of church and state.

It isn’t enough for Republicans to distance themselves.

Normally I overlook these stories but this illustrates the concerns I raised in my post on Saturday, Does Romney’s selection of Ryan signal a change.  We need more political choices – not fewer; that requires the Republican Party to grow up and develop a strong wing that is socially progressive. Reactive political posturing from Republicans trying to distance themselves from Akin’s comments isn’t enough.

Will The Boston Phoenix merge with Stuff@Night

Rumor has it that The Boston Phoenix, which dates back to 1966, may be closing and / or merging with  its sister publication, Stuff@Night.

Are the days really numbered for The Boston Phoenix?

Earlier this year the Phoenix Media/Communications Group (the paper’s parent company) made headlines when it sold their radio station WFNX 101.7 to Clear Channel Communications. Could there be credibility to the rumor the paper the media group is named after may disappear all together or merge into one publication with its sister publication Stuff@Night?

Provincetown Carnival 2012

My friend Olivier Jamin Changeart and his partner Fréd-éric Nicol are two of the three silver aliens who keep appearing in the video above.

Olivier was so quick that when he posted this great video of all the fun from last Thursday during Provincetown’s Carnival Parade I couldn’t resist asking if I could swipe this and share it with you.

Have you never visited Provincetown for Carnival?  Next year’s theme of Viva Las Vegas is sure to be enticing.  2013 Carnival Week will run from August 18th – 24th. Book your rooms / house now.

Temptation Tuesday

bjorn-barreforsThis Stockholm native competes in the Decathlon but did not qualify to participate at the London Olympics.  That fact does not diminish Bjorn’s appeal in my opinion.  FYI Bjorn is studying computer science at the University of Nebraska; knowing this makes Nebraska more appealing.
