Republicans vote to restrict rights of gay servicemen and women

BosGuyWhile it seems the Democratic Party’s leadership is doing its best to try and treat everyone equally under the law, some Republicans in the House Armed Services Committee in the US House of Representatives are intent on doing there utmost to legalize discrimination and to marginalize the LGBT servicemen and women.

The Armed Services Committee approved an amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act that would ban military bases from hosting marriages or “marriage-like ceremonies” between same-sex couples.  The Republican panel members also approved language to protect military personnel from reprisals for expressing “their moral principles and religious beliefs… concerning the appropriate and inappropriate expression of human sexuality.”  You can read the full story as reported on the blog, TheHill.com.

TwitterI had to laugh when I read this because I’m pretty certain that 99% of the people I know believe this is the very definition of Twitter.

Thanks for giving me a good chuckle Christian @MrAussieBum.

Suddenly it makes sense

BosGuyI never felt the urge to train for a triathlon, but suddenly I’m starting to get a better appreciation for the sport.  Perhaps I should volunteer at the next triathlon here in Boston and offer to towel guys off or provide a nice back rub. What can I say? I’m a giver — err — I mean “givah“.

Cupcake the new musical opens tonight

Club CafeA new show called Cupcake opens this week at Club Cafe. This is an original musical developed and produced locally.

Cupcake takes place in Summertown (Hmm… can you say Provincetown?) in a free-spirited seaside resort where every mouth waters for Tom’s irresistible cupcakes.  Unfortunately, rookie Officer Stone is on the prowl and the law clearly states that street sales of food are taboo. The locals, especially the hunky Lifeguard and the sexy-nerdy Librarian relish Tom’s contraband cupcakes and help their adored baker boy avoid arrest.

Boston

May 10 – June 24 at Club Cafe

Shows are Thursdays through Saturdays at 8pm as well as Sunday brunch/matinee shows (June10, 17, and 24 at 2pm). Ticket are $25 -$35 and can be purchased online here.

Obama’s support for same sex marriage is a game changer

Obama Marriage EqualityPresident Obama “came out” in support of same sex marriage yesterday.  Why he chose now and how he got to this point is irrelevant to me. What does matter is a sitting President is on record supporting marriage equality, and that is a game changer for three crucial reasons.

First, although his support does not change Federal Law, having the public support of the highest elected official in the country matters (and it matters a lot).  When Massachusetts legalized Same Sex Marriage on May 17, 2004 it was only because incremental changes  and advancements which had started years before came to fruition.  Obama’s support is more than an incremental advancement.

Obama’s standing within the African American, Black and Arabic communities here and abroad is without equal.  These communities have long been some of the most vocal opposing same sex marriage. Obama’s endorsement and framing the issue as one of equality and fairness will have significant impact on these communities. No doubt there will be some heated sermons in traditionally black churches this Sunday through out the United States.

Lastly, Obama has set a standard which all future Presidential nominees will now be found wanting if they don’t support marriage equality. While this will fire up those opposed to same sex marriage; I believe this is still a gain for the President and for states currently debating legalizing same sex marriage.  Americans love to support winners and the prejudicial arguments to oppose same sex marriage is sounding more and more like a losing argument.  Obama’s support is a game changer.

And just like that, I’m psyched for the 2012 Presidential election.

Call Me Maybe cover by Harvard baseball team

Harvard students + Baseball + Pop Music = Heaven

Okay so the camera is shaky but these baseball players from Harvard are too cute. I know I recently posted a YouTube version of this song from a group of guys in WeHo which you can see here.  But after seeing these handsome guys hamming it up on camera I felt compelled to post this. I’m sure this video will bring a smile to you as well.

For the record, according to the notes in the video the guy to the left was legitimately asleep and never woke up through the entire filming.

Taste of the North End

Last Friday Sergio and I were invited to The Taste of the North End; Boston’s Italian neighborhood. Proceeds from the event benefited North End Waterfront Health, where my good friend Vincenzo Scibelli works. Below is a picture of Vincenzo and his colleague, Noreen Manning.

BosGuyBilly Costa was on hand (as usual) as Master of Ceremonies and he did a nice job kicking off the event, but it was Boston Bruins hockey player, Andrew Ference, who came to the event with his daughter who got most of the attention.  One part handsome and one part good sport this Boston Bruin was nice enough to pose with Sergio for a photo.BosGuyWith so many great restaurants to pick from it was tough to identify a personal favorite, but I have listed my top three plates.  First was Aragosta which served a pasta in a veal, pork and beef sauce that was covered in a blanket of cheese; Second was Mamma Maria’s braised rabbit with polenta; And third was Carmelina’s meatballs – MMM…BosGuy

El Centro to request seasonal outdoor patio

Boston GuyEl Centro, a Mexican restaurant that opened on Shawmut Ave. in the South End last year, will petition the city of Boston today requesting an outdoor patio that can accommodate 14 people.

One assumes that this tiny restaurant so popular with it’s neighbors will be approved.  The additional seating could be the difference between remaining profitable or not since the postage stamp-sized cantina has such limited seating.  Additionally, the neighborhood approved a similar license for Orinico directly across the street a few years ago so there is precedent.

The result of the licensing board’s vote will be available to the public tomorrow afternoon.  I’d like to wish El Centro best of luck today.

Anti-gay Amendment One passes in North Carolina

The decades may pass but hatred seems to always find no greater ally than a Christian (or so it seems).   Thank you North Carolina and all the  “Christian” churches who lobbied so hard to legislate hatred with Amendment One last night. You’ve lived up to my stereotype of what it means to be a Southern Christian.
