BosGuy brain teaser

riddle, exercise for your brainEach Friday morning I post a riddle to get you to think outside the box and exercise your brain. If you are stumped, share it with a friend or colleague and see if you can figure out the answer together.

I’ll confirm answers in the afternoon so don’t worry if you don’t see your comment posted right away. I want to give everyone a chance to guess.

This week’s brain teaser: A man wants to get into a private club that requires a password to enter.  Listening by the door, he hears the doorman say to someone who approaches, “Twelve” and the person reply, “Six”. A few moments later another person approaches and the doorman says, “Six” and this individual replies, “Three”. Thinking he had cracked the code, when the doorman says, “Ten” he confidently replies, “Five”.

Why was he turned away? What would be the correct response?

Restrictions on gay-themed content at YouTube gets a second look

Earlier this week The Associated Press reported that YouTube was reversing some restrictions on LGBTQ content based on ongoing criticisms leveled at the company.  The video titled “Her Vows” was cited as an example. The video contains no nudity, violence or swearing, but YouTube deemed it unsuitable for people under 18. For many LGBTQ readers, this will not come as a surprise.

I have many friends who have had issues with Facebook in the past for posting innocuous photos of themselves. I do understand that in many cases this is more an issue with the imperfections of artificial intelligence, that companies use to manage content. And YouTube seemed to echo that in their statement, saying LGBTQ videos aren’t automatically filtered out, “some videos that cover subjects like health, politics and sexuality may not appear for users and institutions that choose to use this feature.” In the case of LGBT topics, which are by definition intertwined with health, politics and sexuality, filtering out what is and isn’t appropriate can be difficult.

Below U.K.-based YouTube creator Rowan Ellis video criticizes these restrictions, which ironically was initially also restricted, though YouTube has since reclassified that video.

sailing, handsome guy, handsome swedeThis week on Instagram I’m featuring a very handsome Swedish architect who lives in Boston’s Back Bay. I don’t believe I’ve ever met Fredrik but his love of architecture and great eye for taking beautiful photos makes his account one of my favorites. His photos of the Back Bay make me think fondly about the six years I lived near the intersection of Mass. and Comm. Ave. The photograph below is a good example of the types of photos you can expect to see in his posts.

Sergio’s 1st dance performance, Friday, March 24

Late last year Sergio made a personal commitment to return to dance after a 34 year hiatus. Over the past few months he has been taking classes at the Urbanity Dance Studio and later this week on Friday, March 24 he will be performing a hip hop routine choreographed by Jessie Alegria (shown above with Sergio) and a contemporary routine choreographed by Brenna Robinson at the Blackstone Community Center.  I’ll be there cheering him on, and I wanted to give his dance crew a shout out on my blog as well.

His performance starts at 8PM and a $10 donation is suggested at the door. The proceeds will be donated to Urbanity Dance’s Equal Opportunity And Access Fund, which allows Urbanity to provide scholarship to youth dancers who would not be able to afford classes.

What: Come watch Sergio dance
When: Friday, March 24th (starting at 8PM)
Where: Blackstone Community Center, 50 West Brookline St.

Two months into office and President Trump has done nothing but create and perpetuate scandals

donald-trumpSay what you will about President Obama, but the man loved his wife, always seemed to keep his cool and his administration rarely had anything remotely related to a scandal. Fast forward to today and approximately two months into a four year term and President Trump’s administration seems to be the antithesis.

Without even broaching scandals that predate his presidency (e.g. multiple bankruptcies, racial profiling and intimidation of tenants of color and Trump University – just to name a few), his office has been marked by so many scandals it sets my head spinning. However the truly unbelievable part of this story is every scandal is self-inflicted. I’ve tried to tally all the bizarre scandals over the past eight weeks. Due to the fact there have been so many, I may have missed a few but this is what I’ve come up with thus far.

kellyanne conway–  Following Trump’s inauguration, President Trump lies about the number of attendees and insists his were among the largest crowds to attend an inauguration despite photos showing that not to be the case.

– His conversations with foreign leaders have proven to be both embarrassing and compromise longstanding geopolitical policies. Such as his conversation with the President of Taiwan, when called into question our One China policy or a few weeks later when Trump verbalized a one state option for Israel or his terrible call to the Australian Prime Minister, Malcolm Turnbull, in which by his own words he described as “the worst call so far.”donald-trum-voter-fraud– Based on some bizarre report from Breitbart News that President Trump heard, he insists that there was rampant voter fraud and 3-4 million illegal immigrants voted for Hillary to make him lose the popular vote.

– The botched night raid in Yemen that resulted in the death of civilians and Navy SEAL, Ray Owens, injuries to three other Navy SEALs and the Yemeni government banning the US from any future raids blitzing Al Qaeda bases.

donald-trump-business-ties-in-mid-east– A poorly written and executed Executive Order that restricted people from 7-Muslim majority nations from entering the U.S. was found unconstitutional. Although no terrorist attacks from nationals from those countries has ever happened in the US it is interesting to note they do represent nearly every country in the Middle East where Trump’s business doesn’t operate. The rewritten executive order has since been found unconstitutional by Federal judges in Hawaii and Maryland.

– A revolving door of scandals tied to Trump cabinet members regarding possible improper communications with senior Russian officials continues to shine a light on a surprisingly cozy relationship between the US and Trump’s closest confidants. Thus far scandals have resulted in the forced resignation of Gen. Michael Flynn and the recusal of A.G. Sessions after it was found he may have lied to Congress during his hearings about his meeting the Russian ambassador.

– Perhaps the most bizarre of all was Trumps accusation that President Obama and the U.K. government of wiretapping him in outrageous Tweets, which was only made worse when his surrogates (namely Sean Spicer and Kellyanne Conway) doubled down before then suggesting this was all a misunderstanding or possibly even a joke.

– And as recently as this past weekend Trump’s cold body language with German Chancellor Angela Merkel surprised most when he gave her the cold shoulder and appeared to ignore her while they posed for the media after a private meeting, leaving the media to publish headlines like The Guardian’s “Merkel and Trump can’t hide fundamental differences in first visit”.

***** ***** *****               ***** ***** *****               ***** ***** *****

I don’t know about you but I’m exhausted, disgusted and more than a little embarrassed. I’ve never thought to look to the leaders of other nations for stability, direction and leadership, but in the absence of meaningful leadership here in the U.S. I am starting to look to leaders in France, Germany and elsewhere to help fill the vacuum that resulted after President Obama left office.

Boston Stands with the ACLU

boston musicThis weekend I met up with two friends I don’t regularly get a chance to see. Back in the late 90s when I moved back to Boston from Atlanta we went out to see shows all the time, but as we got older and they started families that left less time for evenings out in Boston to catch a live show. Over time I all but stopped going to live shows at local clubs, but my friend Tom (far right in the photo above) still goes to shows on occasion so when he asked if I wanted to go to the benefit I said, absolutely and I’m so glad I did.

The lineup at Saturday night’s benefit included many artists and bands we often went to see in the late 90s. All of these musicians achieved a modicum of success back in the day but never the stardom that would propel them to larger venues, which meant for $20 we could get in and see an excellent live show in Boston.  At the time Boston also had an excellent independent station, WFNX 101.7 FM which played these bands  regularly.  Going to the show on Saturday and seeing many of these acts gave me with a serious case of de ja vu.

Walking into the show on Saturday we were joking at how old the audience looked but by the end of the night we all left with smiles. The line up shown above also included a surprise performance by The Sheila Divine who still sound excellent, but it was actually Tanya Donelly’s band Belly (who I had all but forgotten about) who I thought were the best.  I’m going to have to start checking out the lineups at my old haunts (at least the ones that remain).
