New South End restaurant will serve small plates with “international flavors”

Rebecca Roth, South End restaurantEarlier this month UniversalHub and EaterBoston shared news about the new restaurant that Rebecca Roth and Seth Yeffe (from Gallows South End) will open in the space that was formerly occupied by Hamersley’s Bistro.

According to information learned from a licensing board hearing the new restaurant will serve small plates and shared dishes that have Asian and Mediterranean flavors.  Sounds delicious but it will need to be with the new Barcelona South End tapas restaurant only steps away.  While I think most miss seeing Gordon working behind his kitchen, Rebecca is as savvy as she is sweet and one can assume the restaurant will be a popular destination for South End residents when it opens in 2015.

Furry Friday

Handsome, shirtless man, hairy chest, hunkSince we are arriving in Sergio’s hometown in Brazil today, I thought it would be appropriate to share this photograph of a handsome Brazilian.

Past Furry Friday Posts

BosGuy brain teaser

While I am away from home I’m taking a slight break from posting riddles and sharing  posts that are more like a ‘brain teaser’ since my response / follow up time while on vacation is questionable.

I first post this last November.  Follow the instructions below the image and give it a try.  Can you do it? Share with your friends and see how they do.

riddle

Look at the chart above and say the color (not the word). See how quickly you and others can do this accurately. The right side of your brain wants to say the color but the left side of your brain is focused on reading the word.

Heading to Brazil

gay travelI’m heading to Brazil later today so I may not be able to cross post on FB and Google+ while gone.

You’ll spread more than a little holiday happiness my way if you would share the posts you like on FB with your friends on my behalf while I’m away.

I do anticipate writing some posts when I am in Brazil since I will have a lot of quiet and down time but my regular activity will not resume until I return from my vacation with my in-laws after the New Year’s holiday.  Enjoy this bit of Brazilian man candy who we met last year when we visited Paraty. TWC take over: Men of the Strip

The Welcoming Committee, TWC, male strippersThe Welcoming Committee is encouraging you to embrace the Arts community in all its forms.   They are planning a take over of Men of the Strip, a sexy dance show that will be coming to Boston’s Wilbur Theatre on Saturday, Jan. 3, 2015.

While these shows tend to be overrun by middle aged suburban housewives and bachelorette parties, TWC has decided to give these dancers (and their fans) something to think about with their boldest takeover to date.

Join the takeover at Boston’s Wilbur Theatre on Saturday, Jan 3 at 7 p.m.

No caption necessary – Gronk says it all

Top Chef BostonNormally I ask you to caption a photo for me, but last night on Top Chef New England Patriots player said it all and Eater Boston was there to tell us all about it.

Yesterday Eater Boston provided a sneak preview of a the episode that aired last night.  Their title was inspired by the popular New England Patriots player who actually said “I’d eat a big sausage”.  Thanks for the tip from BosGuy reader Jordan Grossi.  You can read the article here.

I know it isn’t Friday yet but…

handsome hunk, furry friday, shirtless, jeansI’m not working tomorrow so today is my Friday.  Although I have an official “Furry Friday” post ready for you tomorrow, I thought I would dedicate this for everyone who is taking tomorrow off like I am. Have a great day.

How healthy is your state

United Health Foundation, America ObesityLast week USA Today published an article based on the findings of the United Health Foundation, the American Public Health Association and Partnership for Prevention.  These groups publish the longest-running state-by-state analysis of our nation’s health.  The good news is MA came in third and most of the states in the Northeast are among the healthiest.  The bad news is the obesity rate is on the rise virtually everywhere, increasing from 27.6% to 29.4% of adults.

Obesity is a leading contributor to death – more than doubling over the last 25 – and it is closely tied to chronic, costly diseases including diabetes and high blood pressure. It seems to me the best way for us to lower our healthcare costs over the long run is to get away from prescribing pills and start demanding patients get active; mandating 30-60 minutes of supervised activity from personal trainers and nutritionists 4-5 times per week but that common sense approach which has more cost up front isn’t likely to happen anytime soon.

See where your state ranks in this annual study.

Restaurant review Cinquecento

CinquecentoIt has been quite awhile since I last wrote a restaurant review of The Aquitaine Group’s Cinquecento, but earlier this month Sergio and I grabbed dinner at the bar and we had such a good time I wanted to write about it.

Cinquecento has been successful since first opening in 2012. It probably helps that they have ample free parking, a nice patio (for the warmer months) and is easily accessible from the Mass Pike and I-93.  However, that only gets you so far if you don’t have good staff and a talented kitchen – fortunately they have it all.

Italian Restaurant bostonThe menu is exclusively Italian as you might imagine with antipasti, soups and salads ranging in price from $10-$17; homemade pastas $22-$29; fish & meat plates $26-$38. On our recent visit we started dinner with the Burrata con Pistachio ($13.75) as well as the Steak Tartar ($15.75). The Burrata was cool and creamy and paired nicely with the soft figs, creating a surprisingly nice combination of sweet and creamy textures and flavors.

Cinquecento BostonHowever, I was most surprised by the Steak Tartar that was recommended.  The cubed steak was savory and would make for a great option if you want to come in for a snack.  The plate would pair equally well with wine or beer.

Italian restaurant BostonFor dinner Sergio ordered one of his favorite plates, the house made Gnocchi ($24.50) which is shown above, and I splurged, ordering the Aragosta Arrosto ($38.50) shown below.  I had thought I was ordering the lobster and pasta in a fra diavolo sauce but the Aragosta Arrosto was more flavorful than spicy with only a hint of pepper.  Those looking for more heat to the sauce should probably make such a request when ordering.  Having said that, the dinner exceeded my expectations. There was plenty of lobster from the tail and it was cooked perfectly. The pairing of the rich sauce, lobster meat and homemade pasta was so good that Sergio repeatedly poached food from my plate when I wasn’t looking.

Italian restaurant BostonIf you would like to try Cinquecento, I highly recommend making reservations for dinner on weekends. On weekdays you can usually get seats easily enough as a walk in at the bar or in the dining room.  Cinquecento is located at 500 Harrison Avenue in the South End.

Realm health and fitness tips from Kyle

Kyle Realm and Fitness tips TRX workoutWork out of the week: TRX.

TRX is one tool that every fitness freak should have in their gym bag. Due to its unique stimulus and ease in which you can adjust the difficulty of each exercise, I have made the TRX one of my got-to tools in workouts for clients and myself.  TRX is unique in that you can hit every part of your body and scale each exercise in difficulty without adding an additional load or more tools.

This also makes for the perfect stocking stuffer and can help hold us to our cliche new years resolutions to eat better and work out more in the New Year. (Expect some TRX workouts/challenges to be posted in the future.)
