More than 400,000 MBTA late night riders

Late night MBTA serviceThe Boston Globe reported this week that since the MBTA began their one year trial of late night MBTA service that keeps subways and some bus routes open until 3AM has already exceeded 400,000 trips.

Each weekend the MBTA averages between 15,000 to 17,000 trips, dispelling critiques complaints that the Late Night service was a novelty that would see the city’s late night service wane and run with empty subways and buses.

Heading out late this weekend? The MBTA remains the most affordable way to get around.

OMG circumcision results in penis amputation

OMGFile this under news you never want to hear about… According to a recent BuzzFeed article, a man in Alabama went into a hospital for a routine circumcision procedure and awoke to find his penis had been removed. OUCH!!!

I’m not a litigious person, but I can’t even imagine how upset I would be if this happened to me. I’m not sure if the lesson is never get a circumcision or never have a medical procedure in Alabama; probably both.  You can read the full story here.

Misty Copeland: I Will I Want from Under Armour

If you happen to be watching this season of SYTYCD you are already familiar with the beautiful (but very tough judge) Misty Copeland. Misty is best known as a soloist ballerina for the American Ballet Theatre, but this new commercial from Under Armor is sure to increase her fame and change people’s perception of ballet.  More than an art form, Under Armour’s commercial showcases the beautiful athleticism of ballet in their new I Will I Want ad campaign.

In addition to the inspirational message of never giving up, perhaps it will inspire you to check out Boston Ballet’s 2014-2015 season. Information about performance dates and tickets can be found online here.

Restaurant review: Anchovies

South End cheap eatsAnchovies is one of my favorite neighborhood restaurants / bars. It is filled with locals and serves good food at very affordable prices.

The decor in this cozy South End establishment reminds me of my Nana’s basement. The beautiful, long dark wood bar is surrounded by tacky decorations that include everything from a rocking horse on the ceiling to old posters.

The narrow space can make it tough to get around in Anchovies and it fills quickly so if you arrive later in the evening you should mentally prepare for a wait (possibly outside on the sidewalk depending on how crowded it gets).  However, I love this place and always enjoy my dinners here. The Italian menu includes appetizers and salads, pizzas, calzones, pasta and meat entrees as well as sandwiches and paninis. Nothing on the menu is over $17 and you can easily walk out stuffed and satisfied for less than a couple of cocktails at most restaurants in the South End.

We started dinner with an absolute *must try* for any first time visitor. Anchovies combines the best of Mexican and Italian with their signature Italian Nachos for $11. This is a large platter that is meant to be shared. My advice is to use the crisp nachos on the bottom of the plate to scoop the soggier chips laden with braised short rib ragu sauce, ricotta and cherry peppers. The salty chips marry well with the rich meat sauce, and the cherry peppers add just a slight pop but the creamy ricotta gives a great finish. South End cheap eatsAlthough the pictures may not show this, the portions are generous. Neither Sergio nor I finished our meals.  Sergio ordered one of Anchovies most popular plates, The Riccardi – penne with chicken sage sausage and mushrooms in a tomato cream sauce for $15.South End cheap eatsI continued with my cheese-fest by ordering a calzone at Anchovies for $15. I think it is fair to say that Anchovies adds more cheese to their calzone than anyone.  I love their tangy marinara sauce served on the side. I dip the cheese and fillings with the dough into it.  This is my go-to comfort food order; it is so large I can barely eat half of it.South End cheap eats
Anyone looking for home style, no frills Italian will love Anchovies.  Best of all the kitchen is open until 1:30 AM 7-nights a week.  Anchovies is in Boston’s South End at 433 Columbus Ave.

Jordan Lofts in South End

Holland ConstructionJordan Lofts on Harrison Avenue was pitched as a new residential development to the BRA a couple years ago.  Last year the project received board approval to create 18 condominium units and 20 parking spaces. Construction has been underway since the spring.

Unlike other projects in the neighborhood there is virtually no news about Jordan Lofts. Their website still promises a 2012 opening; let’s hope the developer, Holland Construction, pays more attention to detail on the condominiums than they’ve shown their website.

Does anyone know what is happening with Jordan Lofts? When the condominiums are expected to come on the market and their price range? A commercial space appears on the ground floor and any information about that would also be of interest to me.

Charlie’s Sandwich Shoppe in South End to reopen

South End Charlie's Sandwich ShoppeWCVB-TV News is reporting that Charlie’s Sandwich Shoppe on Columbus Avenue is reopening after it closed in June after almost 90 years in business.

The report indicates that a chef who runs Stella will bring the neighborhood favorite back some time next year.  According to WCVB the menu will remain unchanged.

So far there has been no updates on the famed restaurant’s Twittah handle, @TurkeyHash but yours truly will be keeping an eye on the account for anymore news.

Much thanks to Rich Caswell for the tip.
