Stata Center sunset
Last night @hopelandry posted this photograph of the sunset. For those not from the area, the Stata Center is an academic complex designed by Pritzker Prize–winning architect Frank Gehry for the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. I think the image is beautiful.
Travel tip when visiting Paris
Paris is one of my favorite cities in the world so when I read a recent article on Huffington Post Travel, I knew I wanted to share it.
While I love the view of Paris from the Eiffel Tower, I think when Sergio and I next visit, we’ll likely skip the inevitable long line and head out to Tour Montparnesse; a massive skyscraper less than two miles from the Eiffel Tower that has an open air terrace on the 56th floor – some 650 feet above the city’s skyline. Follow my link to check out the amazing view you may appreciate (and photograph) when you visit Paris – wicked awesome view.
Feel the sin in Ogunquit this weekend
No plans for the weekend and want to get out of town? Check out Ogunquit’s Sinner’s Ball.
Friday, August 1st, Seth Fornea will be hosting Maine Street’s Uniform Party. Then on Saturday, my good friends, Dirk Caber and Jesse Jackman will host the Leather, Rubber and Sports Gear Party.
Can we please turn off their microphones
There are a number of conservative commentators who continue to receive a fair amount of mainstream (and left-leaning) media attention, virtually every time they open their mouth and I’m left scratching my head to wonder why. Their views are documented, no longer shocking and frankly uninteresting.
Shy of them saying they believe in science, nothing they say is either surprising or newsworthy anymore so don’t pretend it is and stop giving them the attention they crave. It is annoying.
I firmly believe that if they were no longer given air time (aside from that already provided on their talk radio shows and other conservative outlets like FOX News) they would quickly fade into obscurity. Whatever they once were, they are now essentially ratings whores looking for attention and saying whatever they think might create outrage and get them on major news networks. So can we just stop talking about them – that goes especially for left-leaning sites like MSNBC, Huffington Post, etc…
Thank you

Restaurant review: Jack the Horse Tavern
Last week I was able to have dinner in Brooklyn Heights and a friend who grew up in the neighborhood took me to Jack the Horse Tavern. I was taken with the converted storefront from the moment I stepped inside; exposed brick, comfortable seating and a warm buzz coming from the neighborhood bar come together to create a fantastic vibe.
The menu includes approximately a half dozen salads and starters ranging from $9-$13 and a protein rich menu that is evenly balanced between land and sea options ranging from $16-$26.
I started my dinner with the Green & Red Baby Lettuce which included Manchego cheese, marinated plums and a Riesling Vinaigrette & Rosemary croutons. The salad was light and refreshing which was exactly what I wanted.
After our first course was cleared, I was served the house duck plate which came highly recommended by our waiter. The meal didn’t disappoint and I’d strongly recommend it to anyone who likes duck. The duck was served on a bed of farro with dried cherries almonds and leeks. Every fork was laden with farro and duck dipped in the sweet cherry-almond coulis.
Since my colleagues all indulged in dessert, I opted to join them with another glass of the delicious Italian red we were sharing, Acquagiusta(I’d never heard of it previously but I’ll be asking my local wineshop – Brix – about it) and ordered the cheese plate. I wish I had taken notes when the chef came out to tell us about the five cheeses but I was still thinking about he duck I’d just finished. However, the meal ended equally satisfactory and my dessert became a communal plate that everyone tried and enjoyed.
Jack the Horse Tavern is located at 66 Hicks Street in Brooklyn Heights. It is worth venturing out from Manhattan to try. After dinner stroll along Brooklyn Heights Promenade to ward off the inevitable self-induced food coma.

Realm health and fitness tips with Kyle

Bored with long strenuous sessions on the treadmill? Try Tabata.
Tabata training is based on a 1996 study performed by Izumi Tabata where participants performed 20 second bouts of intense cardio, followed by 10 seconds of rest. This showed to be more effective at gaining anaerobic capacity than a steady cardio (the energy system used in strength training) and improved participants Vo2 max (fat metabolization potential or endurance). Today this is practiced in group fitness rooms and gyms across the country because IT WORKS. It is also a fun and effective alternative to monotonous treadmill sessions. Here are a couple variations to try and enjoy!
This can be done on a rower, recumbent bike, or treadmill. Try the following sequences based on your fitness level. Use a timer and be strict on the work and rest periods. The “work” period should be challenging and hard to maintain, while the “rest” period should be considered “active recovery” or something easy to maintain.
Beginner One minute of “work” 2 minutes “rest”
Intermediate 30 seconds of intense “work” 30 seconds of “rest”
Advanced 45 seconds of “work” 20 seconds of “rest”

Virginia’s ban on same-sex marriage unconstitutional
Today a federal appeals court panel struck down Virginia’s ban on same-sex marriage. The decision is significant because it also means similar marriage bans in North Carolina, South Carolina and West Virginia (states also part of the 4th Circuit) are considered unconstitutional.
Today’s ruling also impacts NC, SC and W VA.
This marks the second time an appellate-level court has ruled on state marriage bans and it sets the stage for a showdown in the US Supreme Court to consider state-level laws.

Long Point Provincetown
While in Provincetown this weekend, I kayaked out to Long Point Lighthouse. Long Point is the final tip of Cape Cod where the land curls back and creates a natural harbor for Provincetown. The Long Point Light House was built in 1827 and is a landmark you can see from shore as well as when arriving by ferry from Boston. The easiest way to visit Long Point is by taking a water taxi but kayaking is a lot of fun and despite some strong headwinds, I was able to make it there in less than an hour.
Kayaking proved to be a good work out and on the way I was able to view some of the impressive yachts moored in the harbor and catch some glimpses of the local wildlife, including a seal that watched me with curiosity for a good 3-4 minutes. I was ill equipped to snap photos but feel like I may be better prepared next time so I can hopefully share some of these experiences. Here are a few photos that I snapped with my phone of Long Point Lighthouse in Ptown.
