Protect your largest organ

sunburnsWith summer kicking into high gear and the weather warming, you need to be sure to protect your largest organ; your skin. Aside from having unsightly tan lines and the pain resulting from burns, excessive sun exposure comes with significant health risks and premature aging (perhaps vanity will motivate you if your own health won’t).

Recently the Huffington Post had a great article, Find Your Perfect Sunscreen Match, Thank Us Later.  It offers suggestions to consider if you have sensitive skin, are prone to breaking out, if you suffer from dry skin, etc… Do yourself a favor and find the right match for your skin and apply liberally through out the summer.

Cathedral Station to open Thursday, June 12th

Red Sox FanToday, Cathedral Station announced they would open to the public at 7pm on Thursday, June 12th.  Cathedral Station will market itself as Boston’s  gay sports bar, making it a great place to catch a Sox game, meet up with friends or play a game of pool or darts.

Cathedral Station’s opening ends a long streak of gay bars closing. The space is also truly unique since it is the only gay bar in Boston that offers free parking as well as outdoor space.  Welcome to the neighborhood Cathedral Station – I wish you much luck.

Manifest by Blake Little

Gay, BearsEarlier this week I was pleasantly surprised when Blake Little’s book, Manifest, arrived at my house. The coffee table book has 100+ pages of men from coast to coast photographed by Blake Little. As Nick Offerman says in the foreward “These people look like men, like real men.”  Clearly my weekly Furry Friday posts have found new found inspiration in Blake’s collection.

Cathedral Station’s big announcement

Fritz BostonWhen Fritz closed earlier this year many locals bemoaned the loss of such a friendly, neighborhood bar. Recent years has seen a steady decline in operating gay bars here in Boston and only a handful remain. However, shortly after Fritz’s closing rumors started to fly that the staff was looking for a new space to reopen.

Since then,when they would open has been the topic of much discussion.  If you are among the curious speculating when they might open, I would strongly recommend that you check out The Cathedral Station Facebook Page at 5PM.

Kevin McDermottVirgin Island looks like a beautiful book of nude photographs by Kevin McDermott of model, recent graduate and underwear entrepreneur, Todd Sanfield. Please take note that the book’s promo video is mildly erotic (like all of Todd’s photos) and contains nudity.

Dirty dozen: Pesticide laden fruits and veggies

Environmental Working Group EWGThe Men’s Health May issue has an article that lists the dirtiest and cleanest fruits and vegetables; something to ponder when you buy groceries.  Based on the Environmental Working Group (EWG) 2014 Dirty Dozen list, they identify the most pesticide-laden produce from the 48 of the most popular fruits and veggies sold in the US.

The lesson I’ve taken is I need to be more diligent washing my produce

They based their rankings on an analysis of 32,000 samples tested by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Non-organic apples topped the list and while kale, collard greens and peppers were frequently contaminated with insecticides; they aren’t particularly toxic to humans so they were not included in their list.Environmental Working Group (EWG)You can read more about this on EWG’s website here. 

Other Important Findings

•    Every sample of imported nectarine samples tested and 99% of apple samples tested positive for at least one pesticide residue.
•    The average potato had most pesticides by weight.
•    A single grape tested positive for 15 pesticides.
•    Single samples of celery, cherry tomatoes, imported snap peas, and strawberries tested positive for 13 different pesticides apiece.
•    Only 1% of avocado samples showed any detectable pesticides.
•    89% of pineapples, 82% of kiwi, 80% of papayas, 88% of mango, and 61% of cantaloupe had no residues.

The Dark Room Collective born in Boston

Earlier this week The New York Times had an interesting article for those of you interested in poetry and or African-American culture.  The Time’s article, The Dark Room Collective: Where Black Poetry Took Wing, was really interesting.

Founded in 1987, this group that formed here in Boston after attending the funeral of James Baldwin in NYC brought together black writers and artists to work, bond and unintentionally nurtured a cultural movement all from a 3-story Victorian house at 31 Inman Street in Cambridge, MA – at least that is how The New York Times tell it.  The article says that the collective proved to be a boom in African-American poetry “arguably as aesthetically significant in the writing world as the work of the Beat Generation, The New York School, the Fugitives, The Black Arts Movement and even the Harlem Renaissance.”

DIY Fitness: November Project

I first wrote about the November Project in early 2013.  Started by Brogan Graham and Bojan Mnadaric, they have created a grassroots fitness movement that provides everyone an affordable alternative to gym memberships by hosting free early morning workouts three times a week in Boston.  Over the past year, the November Project has spread to 17 cities.  Their message is clear:  Fitness should be fun, it is better with a team and all you need to do is show up.

While it might be a tough sell to get up early in the morning during the bitter winter months for some outdoor training, now that the weather is more agreeable (at least in theory) perhaps you’d like to learn more about this very social group that champions personal responsibility for one’s fitness and health.  More about The November Project – including times and locations of their workouts – can be found here, november-project.com.

National Republican Party needs to take cues from Charlie Baker

While I’m undecided on who I will vote for Governor, I thought it would be interesting to share this video that Republican candidate, Charlie Baker, released earlier this month. Charlie is a long-time supporter of LGBT rights, and I like the fact that he shows one can be a Republican and comfortable discussing / supporting LGBT rights.

It can often seem like the Republican Party has a personal vendetta against the LGBT community. That more than anything has probably contributed to my deep distrust of the party of Lincoln. Charlie’s video shows just how far the National Republican Party needs to come – I certainly hope they start to follow his lead.  Much thanks to David at WGB for initially sharing this video.

Boston Pride Retrospective: June 10th at Back Bay Harry’s

Stephen Baumbach, Boston PrideI wanted to write about a pop-up gallery show that I have helped organize with Boston Pride and local photographer, Stephen Baumbach, whom I met during the South End Open Studios just a few weeks ago.   Together we have worked as a team to host a one-night only, pop-up gallery in the back room of Back Bay Harry’s.

After work on Tuesday, June 10th, come over to Back Bay Harry’s grab a drink (or two) and peruse the collection on display in the backroom. Stephen has entitled this collection Pride Retrospective “Find Your Moment” and no doubt many of you will recognize yourself and friends at Boston Pride through the years.
