handsome, hairy, rodrigo, muscles, furry fridayOnce again after trolling the Internet for too long, trying to find a fitting photo for a Furry Friday that happens to fall on St. Patrick’s Day, I’ve come up short. I suppose nobody will complain that I’m reposting this Furry Friday.

BosGuy brain teaser

riddle, exercise for your brainEach Friday morning I post a riddle to get you to think outside the box and exercise your brain. If you are stumped, share it with a friend or colleague and see if you can figure out the answer together.

I’ll confirm answers in the afternoon so don’t worry if you don’t see your comment posted right away. I want to give everyone a chance to guess.

This week’s brain teaser: What do the following words have in common?

IRISH  –  MASTER  –  ROUSE  –  VIOLENT

Middle aged men are more susceptible to feeling alone

isolatedThis past week The Boston Globe had an interesting article that I had missed but my friend Dan had read and forward to me.  The gist of the article written by Billy Baker is that many middle aged American men unconsciously are isolating themselves and over time, this is resulting in many feeling alone.

As the title of the article says, “The biggest threat facing middle-age men isn’t smoking or obesity. It’s loneliness.” Baker writes that after he spent time thinking about who he interacted with regularly he realized that he had been making work, his wife, family (even “me time” as he puts it) a priority, but over the years as family and job commitments increased, slowly but surely it was his “friends time” that had been pushed aside.friendsWhile many gay men are having families and the pressure to be there for their spouse and children is very real, I would like to think that our friendships for most gay men take on an added importance. However, when I look at my own life, I can honestly say that more than half the time I’m connecting with a friend the initial discussion goes something like this.

Me: Hi. How are you? I feel like its been ages. What’s new with you?
Friend: Life is good. I’ve been busy with work…. blah, blah, blah…

I get a lot of satisfaction from my work and it affords me a lifestyle that I really like, but I’d hate to think that I would value or put time at work ahead of time with friends. Staring at a phone or computer is a poor substitute for the connection one feels when you are with a friend nor are the memories going to resonate quite the same, so maybe we all need to evaluate how we are interacting with those closest to us. Are we defaulting to leaving a 5 word note on Facebook to wish a friend well on their birthday or are we picking up the phone, having a conversation to wish them the best and make plans to see each other? It’s really that simple.

Baker suggests regularly scheduling time with friends; either agreeing to a particular routine where you can meet or relying on clubs, sports, etc… that have a schedule you can commit to and be a part of to avoid letting long stretches of time pass before you see each other. If you’d like to read more you can check out the full article here.

I dedicate this weekly post, featuring vintage gay photographs, to the men and women who lived in a more critical time where being true to yourself and loving who you want wasn’t always an option and came at a great price. Do you have a photo you would like to share? This is easily the best tasting event of the season and one any foodie should not miss. I also think this is one of the best organized events of its kind in Boston. The fact that proceeds go to the AIDS Action Committee is a bonus. For more information visit tasteofthesouthend.org.

This week I’m featuring a good friend of mine who I met about 5 years ago here in Boston. Joe has since moved to San Francisco and is working (very successfully I might add) as a personal trainer. If you live in SF and are in the market for a new trainer look him up or you can ogle him from afar on IG. Props to photographer Izzy Berdan in Boston for taking this great photo of Joe.

Pornhub has a small a fleet of branded trucks that are driving around helping to clear Boston’s streets and parking lots for free. Requests for a plowing are being accepted via email at phubplows@gmail.com.

Note:They are not offering to plow driveways.

Mass DOT’s Infra-Space program: South End

Infra-Space Program Boston, South End

Lot 5 is space under the I-93 Expressway near the Ink Block that you’ve probably never paid much attention to before, but the city is making excellent use of this space converting it into (much needed) parking facility. This parking lot will link to two other 24-hour parking facilities that combined has 432 parking spaces.

These monitored parking facilities are helping link South Boston and the South End. However, what you may not realize is they are part of a bigger plan that Mass DOT refers to as The Infra-Space program, which was conceived to help reclaim previously unused space under the I-93 interstate highway and The Mass Pike to link it to Boston’s Harbor Walk; thereby connecting and extending walking, bike and running paths in the South End and Southie through Fort Point Channel and ultimately to the Seaport neighborhood.

The Infra-Space program is a statewide initiative with Mass DOT to re-evaluate spaces under viaducts for better urban and ecological performance. Infra-Space 1 is the pilot project, spanning nearly a half-mile in length through the middle of downtown Boston.

The project includes a storm water management landscape that diverts the runoff from the viaduct, improved maintenance access, public recreation, and a series of scaffold structures that support operable lighting and art installations.

Last Week Tonight media buy to explain healthcare to Trump

I love the HBO program, Last Week Tonight, with John Oliver. It is an intelligent and witty show that consistently makes me laugh and think. For those of you who may not have HBO, you can see clips of the show on YouTube, here.

This past week’s show focused on Trumpcare or maybe it should be called “I don’t care”, concluding with this advert. The commercial shown above will play Wednesday morning on FOX & Friends, since President Trump watches the program regularly. I doubt Trump has the attention span to watch commercials, but I still applaud everyone on the program for their media buy.

BosGuy’s take on carbs

Wednesday is prince spaghetti day, pasta, eating carbs, funny

One of many reasons that I have will never have abdominal definition is my deep and abiding love of carbs in all its forms but especially bread and pasta.

Pasta > literally everything else (with the possible exception of ice cream)

low carb diet, ice cream, I love ice cream

Men in kilts

I’m unsure what it is about the kilt but gay men have an affinity for this article of clothing so at the start of this year created a new weekly post showcasing men in kilts. This week’s post should be called “Blue Boy”.
