Information is beautiful: Novels everyone should read

novels, reading, booksBy day I’m a marketing schmuck who works for a consulting firm where I address the role data plays (or should play) in organizations to help them gain better insights into everything they do so when I saw this word cloud I thought it was pretty cool. The website informationisbeautiful.net has a bunch of different word clouds on a wide variety of topics.

This word cloud was compiled from a consensus of top book lists and prizes. If you click on the link below you can interact with the word cloud by looking at the demographics and gender. Each book also provides a link to its page on Amazon.

Novels Everyone Should Read

My reading preferences err towards books few have read in part due to genre preferences so I was surprised to see that I read 37 of the suggested novels.

Taste-Vin in Belo Horizonte, Brazil

dining, restaurant review, brazil diningEach year Sergio and I travel to Belo Horizonte (B.H.), Brazil. Despite the fact that you may never have heard of his hometown, it has roughly the same population of Chicago – America’s third largest city.

We take advantage of the great dining when we visit B.H. and this year we visited a restaurant in the Lourdes neighborhood that has been operating since 1988 called Taste-Vin. The quaint French restaurant has a cozy feeling. The decor includes friendly messages like a “Recipe for Happiness”, walls lined with wine bottles and small dining rooms that are sectioned off by a central bar that serves to divide the space but still let patrons look from one dining room to another.

Chef Rodrigo Fonseca

Chef Rodrigo Fonseca who also owns Taste-Vin came out to greet us and share his personal recommendations

The menu at Taste-Vin is surprisingly large with Entrées, Soufflés (perhaps what they are best known for serving), Seafood, Duck and Rabbit, Meat and of course Desserts. Because we got a late start to our dinner (10:30PM on a Monday) we decided to skip ordering an entree and doubled down by ordering one of the twelve soufflés to share and the filet mignon. Before we talk about the food we ordered think about the fragrances that filled these rooms as countless soufflés are being served at nearly every table; like the one shown below.

Spinach Souffle

Taste-Vin Spinach Souffle – $18

The filet mignon, served as two 5 oz medallions, is ideal for sharing so we asked to have each medallion served on separate plates. Below is a photo of my plate as it was served – cooked medium rare as requested. The combination of the wine, filet (with a bouquet of eight herbs served to the side) and soufflé was so aromatic that I was salivating like Pavlov’s dogs after hearing the chime of a bell.

The soufflé was so light and full of flavor. I immediately understood why every table had ordered one to share. The Gruyere soufflé we had ordered also had the added benefit of absorbing some of the au poivre vert sauce.

Upon arriving at the table the waitstaff plated the soufflé, adding some additional drama to what normally concludes with plates being served. taste-vin-belo-horizonte-gruyere-souffle-and-filetpng

Although I mentioned that we skipped an entrée because of the late start to our dinner, neither of us were in a rush to leave what turned out to be an excellent meal so with very little urging from Sergio we also ordered the Moelleux Au Chocolat which is best described by sharing this 5 second video.

Should you ever get to Belo Horizonte, you may want to give this restaurant a try. Taste-Vin ranks as the second most popular restaurant out of a possible 8,310 places to try listed on Trip Advisor.

About The Scottsboro Boys: Songwriting team John Kander and Fred Ebb (CabaretChicago) bring to light one of the most infamous events in American history: the shocking true story of nine African American boys jailed in Alabama in 1931 for a crime they did not commit. The musical features a mix of gospel, jazz, and vaudeville, and uses the construct of a minstrel show to tell the harrowing true story that provoked a national outrage and helped launch the American civil rights movement.

Black Friday

shirtless, wicked gawjus, black, black man, absBlack Friday is traditionally considered the start of the Christmas shopping season and is best characterized mad house of crazed shoppers invading every mall and retail shop. As a result, each “Black Friday” I share my version, which I think most of my readers will agree is far more palatable than heading to a mall.

Happy Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving

Today is the Thanksgiving holiday in the United States, but Sergio and I are in Brazil visiting his family. We will actually celebrate the holiday tomorrow when his family can come together since today is not a holiday in Brazil. His Mom’s thoughtful gesture, cooking a Thanksgiving dinner for Sergio and me, strikes me as a lovely example of living the ideals of what the holiday represents.

Happy Thanksgiving

Vintage gay

Vintage GayThis week’s photo is of Freddie Mercury and Kenny Everett who first met in 1974 and became close friends. While they never were lovers, Kenny helped Freddie come to terms with his homosexuality while they enjoyed the London nightlife which is undboubtably where this photo was taken (presumably early 1980s).

I dedicate this weekly post, featuring vintage gay photographs, to the men and women who lived in a more critical time where being true to yourself and loving who you want wasn’t always an option and came at a great price. Do you have a photo you would like to share for a future post? Dewey Square’s latest mural inspires and gives me hope

Mehdi Ghadyanloo, Rose Kennedy Greenway art, Boston Public Art, Dewey SquareLast month I wrote about the Iranian artist, Mehdi Ghadyanloo, who was asked to paint a mural in Boston’s Dewey Square. The artist has made a name for himself painting large trompe-l’oeils in his homeland and the mural that the public was able to watch him create which spans an impressive 76′ x 70′ is a beautiful addition to the Rose Kennedy Greenway.

Called, Spaces of Hope, the mural does not disappoint and is a welcome addition following what I thought was an uninspiring mural it replaced. You can read more about the artist and his first piece of public art here in the US by visiting the Rose Kennedy Greenway website here.

Below I’ve posted the murals in chronological order that have previously graced this facade in Dewey Square.BosArts, boston public art, Mehdi GhadyanlooI’m proud that this Iranian artist was commissioned and given this space to share his work. Good art like Ghadyanloo can help foster dialog and breakdown stereotypes; something I think our country needs to do more of if we are going to come together as one nation.

Word of the day: Shade

Shade (\ˈshād\ noun
Definition: acting in a casual or disrespectful manner towards someone.
Example: My friends looked me up and down when I talked about what I was going to eat tomorrow for Thanksgiving, and I was like, stop with the shade.
