St. Patrick's DayEach Friday I post a riddle to get you to think outside the box and to exercise your brain. Get help or share it with a friend or colleague to see if you can figure it out together.

I’ll confirm answers later in the day so don’t worry if you don’t see your comment posted right away. I want to give everyone a chance to try and solve the riddle.

In honor of St. Patrick’s Day I have shared a popular Irish riddle.  You can watch a funny clip of a daughter asking her Dad the riddle but beware she tells the answer when he can’t figure it out (mind that the video contains profanity).

Post-Gay?  Friday, March 18 – Saturday, April 16, 2016

The Boston LGBTQIA Artist Alliance (BLAA) presents Post-Gay?, a group exhibit of twenty artists. An opening reception will take place on Friday, March 18 from 7-9PM at the Distillery Gallery in Southie at 516 E 2nd Street in Boston.

Post-Gay? considers the consequences of assimilation and progress. Where does growing mainstream acceptance leave more marginalized queer identities, and how do the myriad of LGBTQIA identities conceptualize themselves in the face of shifting cultural opinion? Who gets represented?

Gay-themed Boston / Ptown murder mysteries reissued

Michael McEachem McDowell, Dennis Schuetz, gay literatureNathan Aldyne is the pseudonym for Michael McEachern McDowell, an American novelist and screenwriter who is perhaps best known for writing the screenplay Beetlejuice.  Under the pseudonym, Nathan Aldyne, four gay-themed murder mysteries with Dennis Schuetz  were penned and initially published in the 1980s Vermillion (1980), Cobalt(1982), Slate (1984), and Canary (1986).

Set in the pre-AIDS era the books capture what gay life in Boston and Provincetown was like. All four books have been been reprinted in handsome editions by Felony & Mayhem. They are available on the publisher’s website for purchase as well as Amazon.com and Apple’s iBooks. I’ve just downloaded the series and am reading them now. I am loving them. Pick up a copy.

All you can eat sushi at Yamato II in Back Bay

sushiYamato II on Boylston Street in the Back Bay is easy to miss if you aren’t looking down. The subterranean restaurant serves up all you can sushi seven days a week, but I had never heard of it until we were introduced to it a few weeks ago, when friends of ours invited us to join them.

I love sushi but since Sergio doesn’t like it I rarely eat it.  Fortunately, Yamato II serves up a lot of non-sushi options so even non-sushi enthusiasts like Sergio can really enjoy themselves. Since the photos I snapped don’t do the food justice I’ve opted to use the photo below from the restaurant’s website to give you a peek at some of the tempting things you can order.

Photo credit: Yamato IIThe all you can eat sushi is $17.50 for lunch and $25 for dinner (Sunday through Thursday).  It is a few dollars more for dinner on Friday and Saturdays but regardless of when you go it is a great deal for sushi lovers.  Yamato also has a second location on 117 Chiswick Road in Brighton, MA.

Wine Riot opening in the South End soon

Second GlassBack in January Second Glass, the Boston-based company behind Wine Riot, was surprised by Mayor Walsh who indicated he was opposed to the wine store opening in the former home of Design Within Reach at 519 Tremont Street.

Second Glass took to Twitter to help get support from the neighborhood. I posted a link on my blog to show my support for Second Glass by sharing the link to their petition back on January 6th in my post here. A week later they received the necessary approval from the licensing board after many signed a petition telling Marty Walsh that Wine Riot was welcome in the South End.

second glassNo word when Wine Riot will be opening but it was nice to see the sign at the top of the post go up in the Atelier 505 commercial space.

Boston Pride call for artists

Boston PrideThe Alternative Art Space Gallery is partnering with Boston Pride to host a special exhibit, Solidarity Through Pride, that will open on Thursday, June 2, 2016. A call for entries deadline is Monday, April 25. The exhibit will be hosted at the Alternative Art Space Gallery in the South End June 2 – 17, 2016.

The exhibit is seeking works addressing the LGBT experience and Boston Pride 2016 theme: Solidarity Through Pride. All 2D media will be considered and there is no entry fee for submissions.
