Hotel review: Westin New York Grand Central

Recently The New York Helmsley (or The Ol’ Bitch as I use to call it) was remodeled and reopened as The Westin New York Grand Central. As the name would imply, it is just blocks from Grand Central Station.

The new hotel has 774 guest rooms that are all beautifully updated and fairly spacious.  The Heavenly Bed the Westin brand promotes proved to live up to its name when I collapsed in my room after work.Westin HotelThe room includes a very functional desk business travelers will appreciate; complete with desk level outlets to charge your phone and laptop as well as a solid internet connection and plenty of desk space.Westin HotelWhile the bathroom isn’t luxurious, it certainly is sufficient and provides enough space for a quick visit. Westin NY Grand CentralThe Westin NY Grand Central is located off of 3rd Avenue at 212 East 42nd Street.  Its close proximity to my office and ample sized rooms ensures I’ll be returning to this new Starwood Hotel property.

BosGuyHave you visited this hilarious website? In response to the question above, “What are Mitt-Flops?” The site offers this hilarious response.

Mitt-Flops are open-toe thong sandals designed to make sure you can feel the shifting political winds. Is the climate feeling conservative? Stand on your right foot. Looking liberal out there? Stand on your left foot. With Mitt-Flops, your footwear will be popular in any political climate.

Restaurant review: Ilili NYC

Ilili is a contemporary Lebanese restaurant near the Flatiron district that captures your imagination when you walk in off of 5th Avenue. Long and narrow, the warm colors, beautiful wood and high ceilings give a light and airy feel.  Upon entering the space you see a comfortable lounge and a bar.  A large wall of wood and glass separates these social spaces from the main dining room and provides a cozy feel.

We opted to forgo ordering a main dish and instead ordered several small plates so we could sample as much as possible. Our waiter, Danny, was knowledgeable and very helpful making excellent suggestions on what to try.  All our dishes ranged from $9.00 to $19.00.ilili NYCTwo of our more filling plates were Kibbe Naya $15 (raw lamb kibbe, served with chopped red onions, radish and mint) and Grilled Octopus $19.  Both were very good, but surprisingly I enjoyed the Kibbe Naya more than the octopus which seemed mundane by comparison.  I gobbled up the Kibbe Naya with the small warm pita bread served and a garlic spread that was fragrant and creamy.

ilili nycMouhamara $10 (top left) originates from neighboring Aleppo Syria was rather bland, but the Hommus with lamb and olive oil $11 was both hearty and flavorful and something I would definitely order again.

We also tried a few other plates but sadly my camera (or perhaps my ability to manipulate my camera) let me down and I’m not satisfied with the images.  I would like to note if you love veggies two options we ordered that were absolutely delicious included Fattoush $12 which is a salad with fried crisps of pita bread, mixed greens, mint and pine nuts. Also worth noting (and possibly my favorite dish) was the Dandelion salad $9, which is similar to steamed spinach.

If my review has tempted you, I should let you know that this place is very popular. Perhaps that is why the restaurant has a 4-star review with nearly 800 reviews on Yelp so make reservations in advance.

Starbucks pilots wireless charging in Boston

Starbucks rolled out free WiFi in all its stores two years ago. Now Starbucks has identified 17 locations around Boston for a “limited time in-store trial for wireless charging.”

According to Starbucks chief digital officer Adam Brotman, “We’re building the Powermat technology into some of the tabletops, just to get a sense for how our customers will react, compared to having to plug their mobile devices into the wall.

The first three stores where this technology is being installed are all in the Financial District: One Financial Center, 125 Summer Street, and 101 Federal Street.  Want to find out what other Starbucks  will have this technology installed?  Read the story in today’s Boston Globe here.

Monday’s at Pigalle

Pigalle is a cozy French restaurant that straddles Boston’s Theater District and Bay Village. It has a reputation as a great place for a quiet, romantic dinner.  However, in the summer, Chef Marc Orfaly decided it was time to jazz up the place (literally) so each Monday, a jazz band plays while the kitchen serves food from only the bar menu.

Last Monday, I was invited to sample the new bar menu with my friend and food blogger, 40-Something Life.  The Pigalle bar menu offers a wide variety with items ranging from $1 casino clams to a $39 for Sirloin Steak Frites au Poivre (most items are $5 – $15).  Shown below: Smoked Trout Fried Rice ($12) and Asian-Style Tacos ($7).

Pigalle BostonThe smoked trout fried rice comes in Chinese take-out containers and was one of my favorite menu items. Along with the rice and trout Chef Orfaly includes sausage, leeks and ginger.  The delicious tacos shown above are with duck but the fall menu will serve these with pulled pork.

If you’d prefer shellfish, the Clams Casino ($1 ea), served on a bed of salt stuffed with chunks of bacon and buttery panko crumbs are fragrant enough to make you salivate, but beware these are served hot and can be hard to handle.  A cooler option I preferred are the local oysters served on the half shell (note on Friday’s these are $1 each at the bar). Pigalle BostonIf you would like something more hearty the burger and shepherd’s pie (shown below) are worth sinking your teeth into. The burger is topped with sharp cheddar, caramelized and fried onions that add plenty of flavor and a bit of crunch. The beef, short ribs shepherd’s pie is a must try. It comes served in a hot skillet perfectly seasoned, although I would have loved it if the mashed potatoes were more crispy on top. Pigalle BostonThe bar menu includes other tempting options such as salads, fried artichoke hearts, Malaysian-style chicken wings, etc… Mix up your routine, enjoy Pigalle’s bar menu and live music on Monday nights. Don’t believe me? Check out my friend’s 40-Something Life review.

Pigalle is located at 75 Charles Street South (617) 423-4944
