Photo of the day: Golden Penises

Hard to imagine what is going on here. Perhaps Scott – blogger from Bill in Exile needed some accent decor for his new nightclub in Seattle, Q Nightclub. Then again, perhaps not, from the photos he’s posted, it seems like the club already has enough of the real thing.

Houseguests Miro and Kiril

One week ago today we said goodbye to Miro and Kiril (brothers from Varna, Bulgaria).  They boarded their flight from Boston to head home after spending the previous 3+ months working this summer in Provincetown. It was great to host them for a few days after a long summer of hard work.  Both Miro and Kiril relaxed and talked a lot about their home, Varna, Bulgaria, which looks beautiful in pictures.

Varna BulgariaMiro and Kiril’s home is on the coast of the Black Sea and is one of the largest cities in this European Country.  If you Google “Varna” you will no doubt see beautiful photos of the coast which looks like a great place to visit in the warmer months.  I have to admit prior to meeting these brothers, I never really thought about visiting Bulgaria, but maybe some day I’ll have to go and visit this city on the Black Sea.

Best of luck to Miro and Kiril who are now home studying at University. I hope we get a chance to see them again next summer in Ptown.

Whatcha readin’?

gay literature blogI love to read and on most evenings, I end up reading at least a few pages in bed before falling asleep.  The past few books I’ve read have been disappointing so I’ve refrained from providing a book review post.

Hopefully that will change as I’m currently reading a humorous book that a friend dropped off late last month. In the interim if you are looking for a few suggestions on what to read check out this blog, which I stumbled upon this past weekend called, Speak Its Name.

If you forget to bookmark this site, no worries as I have it now posted in my blogroll of blogs over there

Obama – Hendrix Mural in MA

The President’s Rock Club in Quincy, MA mural of President Barack Obama as Jimi Hendrix has to come down after a resident took issue with it, saying the mural was a political sign.

What a pity, considering the name of the bar / club the mural was sort of appropriate. Maybe they should rename their bar as the Former President’s Rock Club then they could have a mural of Bill Clinton as John Coltrane playing the saxophone.

BoMA sneak peek before opening this week

BoMA RestaurantLast week BoMA Restaurant in the South End had a soft opening, and I was fortunate enough to sit down and enjoy the meal served compliments of Shane Manfred and chef Chris Bussell. I’ll refrain from providing a full review until BoMA opens later this week, but I wanted to provide Boston foodies another glimpse of what they can expect walking into this completely renovated property.

For those familiar with Pho Republique, the transformation will be impressive.  Exposed brick, a large bar and cozy atmosphere defines this urban-chic 80-seat restaurant in SoWA.

Main dishes “Large Plates” range from $14-$27 and include a bit of something for everyone.  Meat lovers will salivate over the BoMA burger with duck fat fries $14 or the hangar steak (shown below) $26.  Seafood fans will be tempted by the roasted monkfish $22 and grilled swordfish with shrimp, gnocchi and artichokes in a lobster jus $27.  Vegetarians will like the eggplant flatbread $14 and pasta options like bucatini all’amatriciana $16.

Shown above left: Chestnut Ravioli, Duck Confit, Rabe in Pistachio Cream was incredibly rich and flavorful. Shown above right: Grass Fed Hangar Steak, Texas Hash, Greens in Chili Garlic Butter.

BoMA has an intriguing dessert menu.  I was tempted to try the “Purple Cow” made with house made grape crush, vanilla ice cream, pop rocks (you read that correct) and a pistachio cookie $10.  However, on this first visit I tried the Chocolate Ganache Torta with Pecan Cookie Crust over a pool of warm caramel.  Lets just say it was absolutely decadent. BoMA opens to the public on Tuesday, October 9th at 1415 Washington Street in the South End.  Reservations encouraged, 617-536-2662.

Boston Local Food Festival

Rainfall didn’t arrive until later in the day on Sunday so I went to check out this large one-day festival.  Cooking demonstrations, food to sample and for sale as well as lots of entertainment and good people watching filled this four block festival along the Rose Kennedy Greenway park. Local shops like Southie’s American Provisions and local farmers had all sort of locally grown food and drink.  Unfortunately, the weather was gloomy so I was happy when I bumped into the sun at the festival.

The variety of stalls selling so many products made me think twice about how easy it can be to buy from local and sustainable sources.

Want to find out more about this annual festival and the organization that makes this possible? Check out the event website, here.

Same Love video by Macklemore and Ryan Lewis

Every day this past week I posted photos of people regardless of where they live, who wanted to show their support for the marriage equality ballot initiative in Washington State.   This song has been adopted as one of the movement’s theme songs so I wanted to share it.

Thank you Kris for letting me know about this song.

Things that make BosGuy go hmm…

My personal trainer’s rather poignant post in response to last week’s Presidential debate when Mitt Romney suggested he would cut spending  to help balance the Federal Budget and then proceeded to cite cutting PBS which produces shows like Sesame Street.

“The supposedly conservative candidate tells us about “waste” in government, and ticks off $10 million in frivolous pork-barrel projects that outrage him…in order to elicit laughter and applause from partisan audiences. All right, so that’s 0.00045 percent of the federal budget dealt with; what does he propose to do with the other 99.99955 percent in order to return our country to live within its means? Not a word. Those same three or four silly programs will be brought up all campaign long and that’s all we’ll hear about where the candidate stands on spending.

Why aren’t they talking about the real.issues. NDAA, the federal reserve, perpetual wars, the patriot act, and our huge debt and countless other economic issues that weren’t addressed during the debate.”

I completely agree Kris. I also think it is shameful that President Obama didn’t press this issue more.   The lack of specifics from both candidates leads to ridiculous comments like Romney’s about cutting PBS.

The third annual Boston local food festival will take place along Boston’s Rose Kennedy Greenway on Sunday from 11AM to 5PM. The festival which attracted more than 30,000 last year addresses the virtues of locally grown and produced food and strives to increase accessibility and availability of healthy local food for all.
