South End restaurant update

BostonThe former home of Pho Republique and more recently The Bombay Club  will soon be opening as BoMa (presumably short for Boston, MA?) The owner, Shane Manfred, also owns and operates two Italian restaurants in Boston’s suburbs, Bellino’s in Wakefield and Bistro 20 in Sudbury. Look for a July opening.

Union Bar and Grille recently rolled out their spring menu, but rumor has it that the menu will change again over the next week.  Look for some lighter fare with a pleasing price point.

The space formerly home to Joe V’s has been under construction for so long Yakitori Zai is fast becoming known as the new restaurant that never opened. Recently I was able to speak to the owner and he acknowledged he was disappointed they missed their planned opening for earlier this month but said they will be opening “very soon”.

El Centro’s request for a seasonal patio that can accommodate up to 14 people was approved on May 10th.  Have you stopped by to enjoy dining al fresco on the new patio?

Brian Piccini (owner of Deuxave in Back Bay and dbar in Dorchester) is moving forward with plans to open a new steak house named Boston Chops in the space formerly occupied by banq and Ginger Park on Washington Street (shown above).  However, Piccini still lacks a liquor license and the project will remain sidelined until one can be secured.

Boston area museums announce HUGE gifts

Saundra LaneIt has been a great week for two Boston area museums.  On Monday, May 21st The Museum of Fine Arts (MFA) announced that one of the museum’s trustees, Saundra Lane, would bequeath 6,000 photographs, including works from Charles Sheeler, Edward Weston, and Ansel Adams in addition to 100 works on paper and 25 paintings.

The  donation is estimated to be in excess of $100,000,000

Lane’s generous donation is one of the “largest and most significant gifts in it’s history” according to the press release.  The gift significantly increases the number of objects in the MFA’s photography collection from 9,000 to 15,000.

Peabody Essex MuseumIris Apfel, the 90 year old fashion icon best known for her signature owl eye glasses and chunky jewelry will give more than 600 pieces of clothing and accessories to the Peabody Essex Museum (P.E.M.) in Salem, MA.  Why is this New Yorker looking to the P.E.M. and not the MOMA which premiered her exhibition Rare Bird in 2005? Apparently that tour which also stopped at the P.E.M. impressed her so much that she decided this is where she’d like her collection to reside. In addition to her donation, her husband will also bequeath an undisclosed sum to help build the museum’s new fashion gallery.

Fashionistas take note

The P.E.M. is best known for their maritime art collection.  Apfel’s collection which also include articles from world famous designers including Karl Lagerfeld, Christian Dior, and Alexander McQueen will be included in the museum’s new fashion gallery and is expected to hopefully spur other fashion donations for the museum.

NAACP says same sex marriage is a civil right

Same Sex MarriageThe board of the N.A.A.C.P. voted to endorse same sex marriage this weekend, putting the weight of the country’s most prominent civil rights group behind a cause that has long divided the black community.   The N.A.A.C.P. endorsement brings them in line with President Obama and goes a long way to validating this as a fundamental civil right.

Fans make better music videos

music televisionI’m seriously dating myself, but I remember when MTV was new and launched careers of some of the biggest acts in the 1980s.  Fast forward to today and MTV is a shell of its former self. YouTube is the new MTV.

With all the big budgets, wardrobe, choreographers, directors and producers it amazes me how boring the official music videos are by comparison to the unofficial videos created by fans.

Recently I’ve posted different music videos from Harvard University’s Men’s Baseball team, the models of Randy Blue and the Broadway cast of Anything Goes.  Let me know if you find these entertaining or if you feel like its old news by the time I post these.

This handsome 20-something is as easy to chat with as he is on the eyes so start following and say hello to this shy Bostonian.

Men of TwitterHelloBlaine – Blaine is from Houston, Texas. This handsome techie is even more of a Twitter addict than me.  If you follow Blaine you’ll quickly learn that he loves men’s fashion and is interested in all things pertaining to health and fitness. HUNGRY will include a combination of how-to and celebrity-chef food videos.  As a part-time cook with a penchant for buying fruits and veggies I’ve never seen before, I regularly check YouTube for food preparation tips.  Last spring after watching a video on how to prepare artichokes, I wrote my post Chef BosGuy.
