Call Me Maybe cover by Harvard baseball team
Harvard students + Baseball + Pop Music = Heaven
Okay so the camera is shaky but these baseball players from Harvard are too cute. I know I recently posted a YouTube version of this song from a group of guys in WeHo which you can see here. But after seeing these handsome guys hamming it up on camera I felt compelled to post this. I’m sure this video will bring a smile to you as well.
For the record, according to the notes in the video the guy to the left was legitimately asleep and never woke up through the entire filming.
Taste of the North End
Last Friday Sergio and I were invited to The Taste of the North End; Boston’s Italian neighborhood. Proceeds from the event benefited North End Waterfront Health, where my good friend Vincenzo Scibelli works. Below is a picture of Vincenzo and his colleague, Noreen Manning.
Billy Costa was on hand (as usual) as Master of Ceremonies and he did a nice job kicking off the event, but it was Boston Bruins hockey player, Andrew Ference, who came to the event with his daughter who got most of the attention. One part handsome and one part good sport this Boston Bruin was nice enough to pose with Sergio for a photo.
With so many great restaurants to pick from it was tough to identify a personal favorite, but I have listed my top three plates. First was Aragosta which served a pasta in a veal, pork and beef sauce that was covered in a blanket of cheese; Second was Mamma Maria’s braised rabbit with polenta; And third was Carmelina’s meatballs – MMM…
El Centro to request seasonal outdoor patio
El Centro, a Mexican restaurant that opened on Shawmut Ave. in the South End last year, will petition the city of Boston today requesting an outdoor patio that can accommodate 14 people.
One assumes that this tiny restaurant so popular with it’s neighbors will be approved. The additional seating could be the difference between remaining profitable or not since the postage stamp-sized cantina has such limited seating. Additionally, the neighborhood approved a similar license for Orinico directly across the street a few years ago so there is precedent.
The result of the licensing board’s vote will be available to the public tomorrow afternoon. I’d like to wish El Centro best of luck today.
Anti-gay Amendment One passes in North Carolina
The decades may pass but hatred seems to always find no greater ally than a Christian (or so it seems). Thank you North Carolina and all the “Christian” churches who lobbied so hard to legislate hatred with Amendment One last night. You’ve lived up to my stereotype of what it means to be a Southern Christian.
Nail me good salon
What is going on with these salons? Last week I posted a photo of Oooh Girl who did your hair salon. Can you imagine how ridiculous the poor receptionist must sound answering the phones?
“Hello, you’ve reached Nail Me Good. How may I be of service?”
Thanks to BostonDrunks.com for sharing.
French swimmers model underwear
C’est Magnifique!
French underwear company Hom photographed eight French swimmers for their new underwear collection. There are more photographs on the OHLALA Mag blog where I first read the story as well as a two minute video on YouTube which I thought was less interesting but you can decide by watching here.
Hey US swimmers how about you step up to the plate and do the same? After seeing Ricky Berens swimming his Olympic qualifying race in Rome with a torn suit that exposed his bum this should seem tame.
Restaurant review: Rosa Mexicano
Rosa Mexicano’s Boston location formerly opens for dinner today in the Seaport District. They will start serving lunch next Monday, May 14th.
The inside of the restaurant is large, well decorated (complete with their signature Aculpoco Divers water feature) and offers space for private functions as well as a nice patio with views of Boston harbor.
The menu is comprised of Starters, Snacks & Ceviches that mostly range from $12-$14; Tacos vary from $16-$20; and Main Plates are $17-$29. When I was at Rosa Mexicano earlier this week we had a limited tasting menu, but there were enough options to provide a good idea of what to expect. If our service is any indication of this location, patrons will be well tended to by an eager and friendly waitstaff that is knowledgeable of the menu and not afraid to offer suggestions.
Shown above was my favorite cocktail: La Sandia ($11) fresh muddled watermelon, rosemary simple syrup, tequila and fresh lemon; guacamole made table side to order ($14); Pescado de Baja Tacos ($16.50) and Enchilada de Jaiba ($23.50). The fish tacos I ordered was agreed by all to be the best plate. If you decide to order the fresh guacamole (and I do suggest you try it) then skip having a starter unless you have a large appetite otherwise you will leave overly stuffed.
Rosa Mexicano will be a popular place, but it has plenty of competition with a tequila cantina down the road at Liberty Wharf. However, there is enough business for both to succeed and I expect both shall.
Rosa Mexicano is at 155 Seaport Blvd — (617) 476-6122
Gawjus
It is raining here in Boston and through much of New England this morning. I hope this puts a smile on your face and brightens your day.
Oyster Invitational
This past Sunday B&G Oysters hosted the 4th annual Oyster Invitational, which included oyster shucking demos and speed contests, wine pairing conversations and of course plenty to sample and taste.
I briefly chatted with Rebecca Roth, owner of The South End Gallows, while hoards of bivalve buffs lined up and waited for more. Her team was serving oysters as fast as they could but there was no stopping the crowds that came back for seconds and thirds.
This year B&G Oysters was joined by local restaurants: The Gallows, Citizen Public House & Oyster Bar, DeuxAve, Erbaluce, Green Street, Hungry Mother, Neptune Oyster, Oleana, Orinoco, and Uni. Oysters were provided by Woodbury Shellfish, Riptide Oysters, Matunuck Oyster Farm, Salt Pond Oysters, Blue Island Shellfish, and Naked Cowboy Oysters. Below are a few photos from the event.
SpeakEasy Stage presents Xanadu
On Friday, the SpeakEasy Stage will open their 100th production with the 80s cult movie classic, Xanadu, and I will be front and center to see this movie from 1980 that was later turned into a Broadway musical.
Xanadu’s performances will run through Saturday, June 9th so be sure to get your tickets while they remain available. You can do this by visiting the Calderwood theater box office on Tremont Street or purchasing them online here.
Xanadu from The SpeakEasy Stage May 11th – June 9th
Here’s a little something to put you in the mood while you log-on to buy your tickets… Who can resist a little Olivia Newton-John?
Men of Twitter
Each Monday I feature men on Twitter who catch my eye and whom I think you may enjoy following. I refer to these posts as Men of Twitter. This week I’m spanning the Globe as I feature two incredibly attractive men from the opposite sides of the world. I hope you’ll check them out and if on Twitter consider following.
DanielGarofali – I first saw and chatted with Daniel when he was dancing at the clubs in Sydney in 2009. I also taped some of the performances where he was a back up dancer at the 2009 Drag! Camp as Christmas, which you can see here, here, and here. This Australian swimsuit model has gone on to bigger things since then including a very sexy calendar. In addition to following him on Twitter you can check out his self named website, danielgarofali.com.
AdrianHansel – Clear across the world in the United Kingdom is this handsome and talented entertainer. Adrian is originally from Windsor but has lived in London since he was 16 years old. Adrian just finished an arena show where he performed as a guest singer on the Michael Ball tour and is currently working on various musical workshops. You can keep up to date with the latest from Adrian by following him on Twitter or checking out his new website, www.adrianhansel.com.
Man dies when testicles squeezed: OUCH!
This is quite possibly the most distressing news story I’ve read all year. Just reading the headline made me gulp. The lesson I’ve taken from this story is don’t mess with middle aged Chinese women. Should you have the same sick fascination as me you’ll read the full news story otherwise you can just take my word and never mess with an angry / determined Chinese woman.
