Restaurant review: dBar

Formerly an Irish-style pub,dBar can get rowdy later in the evening – especially on Tuesdays when they host “Show Tune Tuesdays” or on the weekends, so for that reason I suggest going on Sunday’s, Monday’s and Wednesday’s when its easy to get a table and you won’t be shouting over DJs or show tunes.

The menu, created by Executive Chef, Chris Coombs, is typically American but inspired by French cooking.  Its approachable without being boring, meaning that both picky eaters and those looking for something different can sit at the same table and find something they’d like. When we sat down for dinner we started with lobster bisque for $8.00 and the beet trio salad with goat cheese croquette (mmm), candied hazelnuts, and croutons for $11.00.For dinner we ordered two of the restaurant’s most popular plates, the crispy organic chicken breast served with mashed potato, steamed broccoli in a delicious oyster mushroom-madeira jus for $18.00 and the sirloin burger, frites and salad for $12.50.  The chicken and burger were both cooked to perfection.  The portions ran large, making us leave with a slight food coma. dBar does Dorchester proud and is worth trying.  In the summer, many of the vegetables and herbs on the plates served are grown fresh atop the roof of dBar. The restaurant is open 7-days a week and has a full bar.  If you are interested in trying dBar you can call them at (617) 265-4490 or stop by for a visit at 1236 Dorchester Ave. You can find dBar online at, www.dbarboston.com.

My posting by the same name on Monday resulted in several emails and Tweets so I thought I’d include this image.  I hope you find it humorous as well. I know more than a few people like this so I thought it was hilarious.

Boston Ballet: Play with Fire

Tonight we are off to the ballet to see Play with Fire, which according to the Boston Ballet website is described as a trio of contemporary works.

The Sharp Side of Dark features a large-scale architectural set and a haunting lighting design; Bella Figura is tangibly sensual in its adoration and reverence towards the human body; and Rooster is by a British choreographer and set to classic Rolling Stones songs.

If you haven’t been to the ballet in awhile, why don’t you consider getting tickets? You may be surprised by how much you enjoy yourself. Play with Fire concludes on March 11th and will be followed by Don Quixote from April 26 – May 6 and the final performance for the 2012 Spring Season will be Fancy Free from May 10 – May 20.  More information about the performances and ticket prices are available here.

Calvin Klein sells sex better than clothes

I had to remind myself this was an advertisement when I first saw this picture.  Calvin Klein has always been brilliant at using sex to sell their merchandise.  I’ll admit I’ve never been a fan of the clothing, but I’ve always had a deep appreciation for their marketing.

BosGuy brain teaser

As usual, this week’s brain teaser stumped me, but I have a feeling many of you will find it painfully obvious and guess the answer quickly. As usual, I’ll confirm answers or post the answer later in the day.

What seven-letter word has hundreds of letters in it?

Red Sox Captain Jason Varitek announces his retirement

Jason Varitek is a three-time all star and golden glove award winner, but for fans Jason is so much more.  He’s the rare player today who spent his entire career with one team, the Red Sox. Jason has been the team Captain since the 2005 season, and he proved to be a great role model, letting his bat and glove do all the talking and leaving the trash talk to players with less class.

Jason’s retirement comes on the heels of Tim Wakefield’s announcement last month.  I’ll miss Jason in the upcoming season and hope he doesn’t disappear from Red Sox nation entirely.

BosGuy cooks: Wicked easy chicken

Cooking chicken can seem a bit like the culinary version of Ground Hog Day.  Unless you are a vegetarian, you likely have a fair amount of this protein in your diet, and it can quickly become very boring to cook.  This recipe takes approximately 30 minutes to prep, cook and clean and all the ingredients may be purchased for ~$10.00 per person.

Chicken Prep Step 1: Slice the chicken breast into strips (it will cook more quickly this way). Then  put each strip into a ziplock bag and pound the strip flat. In the photo below the two strips on the left have been pounded.
Chicken Prep Step 2: Dip the pounded breast strips in a saucer filled with 1 cup of milk then into a second saucer filled with 1 cup of panko (or bread) crumbs and a half cup of grated parmesan cheese. Tap off the excess and place in a plate to prepare for cooking.

Cooking: In this recipe I’ve used one leek and two cups of sliced mushrooms, but an onion may be used in lieu of the leek.  You may also substitute the mushrooms with a vegetable of your liking, but I like the texture and taste of mushrooms with chicken.  Saute your vegetables with 1 tsp of melted butter over medium heat.  As the vegetables soften, add a half to one cup of white wine, the chicken and cover the pan (flip the chicken after 2-3 minutes).Accompanying my “Wicked easy chicken” is steamed broccoli as well as whole grain rice.  As mentioned above, the total time in the kitchen including prep, cooking and clean up is less than 30 minutes.  If you are dieting, you can remove the breading process outlined in “Chicken Prep Step 2” and add the juice of one lemon for additional flavoring. Likewise the white wine can be substituted with another liquid of your choosing but I would suggest chicken stock.

New cafe in South End: Orange Corner Cafe

The South End recently welcomed a new independent cafe to the neighborhood.  The Orange Corner Cafe is located at 374 Mass Ave, providing a cozy atmosphere where you can grab a coffee.  The menu also includes baked goods, sandwiches, paninis and soups.

Although there are 8 coffee shops within a 4 block radius of my apartment in the South End, the Orange Corner Cafe, tucked near the Back Bay and South End line is a great location that is under served. Check out this new business and let me know what you think.

Hint: coupons are available for download if you visit their website.

Where the f*ck are my cookies

Will I capitulate and grab a cookie and coffee this afternoon? The snow is an excellent deterrent but never underestimate what I’ll do for a good cookie. The cafe across the street starts selling all baked goods at 50% off starting at 4PM… Damn my vanity.

Zipcar eyes expanding service to Provincetown

Cambridge, MA-based Zipcar is contemplating expanding their car-sharing service to Provincetown, MA this summer by piloting a program that would begin around Memorial Day.

Zipcar is in conversations with the Harbor Hotel, which is deep in the East End at 698 Commercial Street, and they have developed a quick survey to get your feedback.  Take a moment and let Zipcar know your thoughts about expanding their car-sharing service to Provincetown by taking their Ptown Survey.

Leap Day sale $29 to see Xanadu

I love getting a good deal so when I saw this offer from The SpeakEasy Stage last night, promoting their spring musical comedy, Xanadu with a one day sale, I knew I had to post this.  Tickets for the first week of performances of Xanadu (May 11-17 shows only) will be only $29 (not including phone or online handling fees).

This is a GREAT deal so snag a pair of tickets to see the show, which looks as if it will marry nostalgia with humor. Sale hours are today from 9:00am – midnight (online at www.SpeakEasyStage.com) and from 12:00pm – 7:00pm  by phone (617-933-8600 ) or for walk-up sales.

How to tie a bow tie

Black tie season is in full swing and I’ve been noticing a lot of grown men  with clip-on bow ties.  If you are attending your high school prom you are forgiven.  For everyone else, there is no excuse.  Take a moment to watch this quick video courtesy of Details Magazine on how to tie your bow tie.

Tweet of the day: Santorum surging

In light of the fact that the Michigan Primary is today, and the news has been obsessing over the rise and fall in the polls of different Republican candidates, I thought I’d resurrect this tweet from last week about Rick Santorum.  @reed27 regularly posts funny tweets so if you are on Twitter you may enjoy following this wise cracking Bostonian.

Zakim reflections by Greg MacKay

When people think of Boston, they rightfully conjure images of Victorian era bow front brownstones and row houses; modern architecture, while present, is lost amid a mass of brick.  However, when Boston’s expressway was torn down during the Big Dig, the city chose a modern design, and built the world’s widest cable-stayed bridge. The clean lines and modern design has made it irresistible to local photographers like Greg MacKay who recently took this picture.  Like what you see? More of his work is online here.

Changing things up at the gym

It is the end of an era (sort of).  In February 2009 my partner gave me a  trial pack at my local gym to work out with a personal trainer.  That thoughtful gift resulted in a 3 year relationship with my personal trainer, Stew.  Long time readers will recognize his photo to the left.  His workouts still leave me winded and my last session with him this past Friday was killer, but after 3 years I’ve decided I need to mix things up and change my routine.

Starting today, I’m working out with a new trainer.  Kris shares a similar work out philosophy and both trainers know and respect each other so I feel like I’ll be in good hands.  However, not knowing what to expect has me a bit on edge. I’ll be sure to share more about my work out routine with my new trainer, Kris, in the coming weeks, but for now I wanted to recognize and say thank you to Stew for all his help.
