Netflix brings back Queer Eye for the Straight Guy

What is old is new again; first it was announced that Will & Grace would return to NBC then ABC said it was bringing back its popular show Roseanne. Now Netflix has revived the Bravo TV series Queer Eye for the Straight Guy, but this time with a new cast and in a new city.

Moving from the more politically progressive northeast this new cast will be based in Atlanta and roam Dixie. The new Fab Five includes Bobby Berk as the show’s design expert; Karamo Brown will be the cast’s cultural attache (so to speak); Antoni Porowski will manage all things related to food and wine; Jonathan Van Ness is responsible for personal grooming; and Tan France will lead the charge in the fashion department.

The Netflix teaser that dropped earlier this week opens with the lines, “The original show was fighting for tolerance. Our fight is for acceptance.” I’m not sure I really agree with that but you get the gist of this light-hearted formulaic series that will try to make America a little more accepting (and hopefully more polite) – one makeover at a time.

Check’em out on Netflix here: Queer Eye for the Straight Guy

Shakespeare In Love will make you smile and laugh

SpeakEasy Stage, Boston Theater, BosArts

Set in the larger and more comfortable Wimberly Theater at the Calderwood Pavilion, SpeakEasy uses the stage brilliantly to recreate a 16th Century theater in London that effectively transitions from playhouse to bar to bedroom with the same ease as the co-leads who portray their parts. Lead roles are played by the handsome Netwon native George Olesky and the beautiful Jennifer Ellis who I loved in SpeakEasy’s spring 2017 production of The Bridges of Madison County.

The play is rife with witty lines that reference Shakespeare plays and funny scenarios; like in the beginning of the play depicting the Bard as suffering from writer’s bloc and incapable of writing even a sonnet until he unwittingly meets his Juliet. One needn’t be a fan of Shakespeare to appreciate the humor anymore than one needed to know it to enjoy the movie, but it certainly did make me laugh hearing famous lines turned on their head like using one of Lady MacBeth’s most guilt-ridden lines as a humorous punch line for a dog.

Tickets to see Shakespeare In Love are reasonably priced with tickets starting at $25.00. Performances run Wednesday thru Sunday until February 10th.

Sound like a great show but don’t live in Boston? The SpeakEasy Stage joins fourteen other theater companies in the United States, that have productions of this comedy in their 2017 / 2018 season, making Shakespeare In Love the most produced show in the country so check your local theater companies – who knows? Perhaps a production of this comedy is taking place nearby.

Vintage gay

beach, kikiThis week’s vintage gay post which is nearly 100 years old comes from the homohistory blog. Unfortunately, I don’t know where this was taken.

I dedicate this weekly post, featuring vintage gay photographs, to the men and women who lived in a more critical time where being true to yourself and loving who you want wasn’t always an option and came at a great price. Do you have a photo you would like to share? Pew Research political typology quiz

Are you a core conservative, solid liberal or somewhere in between? Take Pew Research’s quiz to see which political typology group is your best match

Pew Research has an online survey to help evaluate what political group matches your political philosophy. It was created and based on a survey of more than 5,000 U.S. adults. I will admit I did not agree with many of the answers to the questions, which were too black and white, and I often had to choose between which answer I disagreed with less, but it was interesting all the same. Pew Research, political typology quizAfter taking Pew’s survey I received a rating of “Solid Liberal” (no surprise to me or those who know me). According to Pew only about 16% of America identify as Solid Liberals. Characteristics of this political group are steadfast advocates for social safety nets; they think immigrants are an important part of what makes America unique and great; support social issues and believe homosexuality should be accepted by society.  If you’d like to take this online quiz link here

Registration for Dodgeball closes Tuesday, January 30th

Billiards teams meet each Monday at Scholars in Downtown Crossing from 7:30pm-10:30pm from February 12 – April 2, 2018.

Dodgeball games are on Saturday afternoons in the South End from 2:00pm-5:00pm, from March 3 – April 28, 2018.gay boston, gay sportsMany use the New Year as an opportunity to make resolutions. A common resolution is to be more active and meet people, but that can be difficult for gay men in Boston. Starting in 2018, I want to feature the LGBTQ groups and organizations that help people connect and enrich Boston’s gay life.

If you’d like to have your club / team featured, please email me at bosguymail@gmail.com or via FB messenger.

Trumpism: Divide and conquer

While political junkies talk endlessly about dropping poll numbers for President Trump and his detractors make bold predictions for the midterm elections, I’m reminded of the proverb, Pride Comes Before a Fall.

Midterm elections are notoriously difficult to get voter turnout and Trump’s supporters are if nothing else, loyal and dedicated. Combine that with some findings published in this week’s NYT article, Trump’s Popularity Has Declined Across Voting Blocs in the Past Year, which despite its title suggests that his largest declines comes from voting blocs that never really supported him to begin with and one wonders why Democrats feel quite so confident?

Does it really matter that his popularity has fallen 8 points by those who describe themselves as Democrats? While his drop in popularity also includes crucial demographics for the President like self described Republicans and Conservatives – these dips are far smaller. It seems to me that detractors of the President should spend more time focusing on targeting voters who either stood on the sidelines in the 2016 Presidential election or voted for Trump more to vote against Clinton than out of any support for the President.

A house divided against itself cannot stand” – Abraham Lincoln

Building bridges is a lot harder than blowing them up and unfortunately Democrats are in far greater need for bridge builders. Under Trump’s leadership, the Republican Party has a laser focus on shrinking and riling up their base to ensure they turn out in every election. Donald Trump has successfully employed a divide and conquer strategy. Playing on people’s fears and anger inevitably benefits Donald Trump. If you are truly opposed to Donald Trump what will you do to replace those fears with faith in a better tomorrow and anger with action?

2017 South End real estate stakeholder’s report

South End, Julian LevesqueI recently received Steven Cohen’s South End Stakeholder’s Report (Winter 2017).  The report, compiled by SCT, includes interesting details for those of you interested in real estate.  Here are some of the findings shared about the South End market and Boston that caught my attention.

  • The median sales price for the South End in Q3 2017 has increased over the past year to $939,500 (in Q3 2016 it was $858,250).
  • There are currently 8 construction projects underway in the South End including a 200 room hotel, office space and residential projects that will add approximately 1,000 new apartments and condos.
  • There are an additional 4 projects that have received Board Approval but have not started construction that could add as many as another 1,000 residential units and 900,000 square feet of commercial and office space.

The report also shares some interesting data points about the city of Boston including the following:

  • JLL City Momentum Index (CMI) tracks the speed of change of a city’s economic and commercial real estate market and ranks Boston in the top ten in the world. Only Silicon Valley and Austin, TX ranked higher in the US.
  • Boston joins London, Stockholm, Sydney, Melbourne and Silicon Valley as cities with strong short-term momentum and attributes for sustainable long-term momentum.
  • Boston ranks as the third most preferred US city for foreign investment in real estate behind NYC and LA.

You can read the full report online at stevencohenteam.com/publications.
