JetBlue to fly non-stop between Boston and Savannah

Midnight_in_the_Garden_of_Good_and_EvilAttention all you John Berendt fans or for those of you who saw the movie – fans of  Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil.

Earlier this week JetBlue announced that starting in February the airline will fly non-stop from Boston to Savannah, GA.

If you’ve never been, I’d encourage you to add this quaint town to your list of places to visit.  Savannah is Georgia’s oldest town and it is filled with beautiful 19th century architecture and delicious restaurants.  With average temperatures in February and March in the low 7os it isn’t exactly hot but as compared to Boston, it might be a nice, affordable option for a long weekend if you want to get away.

Paraty Brazil

Paraty BrazilPronounced Para-chee, this quiet coastal town just a few hours drive from Rio de Janeiro is where I will spend several relaxing days and nights after what I’m sure will be a fun week in Rio de Janeiro in late November / early December.

You may recall that last year’s trip to Brazil took me to Florianopolis or “Floripa” as Brazilians call it. I’ll have more to share about Paraty in the coming months and after I return but until then you can read about my trip to Florianopolis here:

Are you contemplating a trip to South America’s largest (and in my opinion most beautiful) country? Have questions about Brazil? Feel free to shoot me an email at bosguymail@gmail.com or leave a comment.

London Villages by Zena Alkayat

London Villages by Zena AlkayatAre you planning a visit to London? Not long after guest blogger James H. submitted his post, 5 great gay date spots in London, Zena Alkayat’s book London Villages arrived at my house, and I couldn’t stop thumbing through it.

Tucked away, inside the massive city of London, are dozens of neighborhoods “villages” filled with charming local markets, restaurants, pubs and gardens that many tourists never get a chance to see. Divided into five categories: Central, North, South, East and West; each section describes a half dozen or more of these charming villages, including photos and images along with contact information for local markets, restaurants, pubs and gardens that many tourists never get a chance to see.

Emirates Airline to start flights to Boston

travelEarlier this summer I wrote a post about how Boston’s Logan airport has been successfully wooing new airlines and routes while consciously working to lessen reliance on traditional large US carriers and looking beyond Europe for destinations to serve in this post.

Japan Airlines (JAL) started flights to Tokyo, Turkish Airlines has announced flights to Istanbul and Copa Airlines announced flights to Central America from Boston.  Now Emirates Airlines has announced that they will start flying to Boston in March 2014, making it the 8th US city they will serve.  While flying can be a pain in the neck – I still love travel and welcome the news.

Much thanks to Adam from Boston Hospitality Industry Blog for pointing this out.  You can read more if interested, in the Dubai Chronicle.

Surviving a Boston winter

Travel Last year I wrote a series of posts giving some tips to new residents on how to survive a Boston winter.  You may not want to think about it, but winter in Boston will be here before you realize it and when it comes to surviving a New England winter, planning ahead is key.

Booking airfare in September and October for January and February can help you get a better fare and also allows you to pay off the cost of the airline ticket well in advance of your vacation. The photo above is of your’s truly relaxing at the W Vieques this past February.  Contemplating a trip to Vieques, P.R.? Feel free to check out some of my posts about my trip last year.

I find the best way to make it through Boston’s brutal winter is to plan a quick respite for a few nights some place warm. Cheap seats abound for flights in January, February and March if you have some flexibility (hint: airfares on Tuesdays and Wednesdays are cheaper than end of week and weekends).

Book your flights now while more affordable seats remain and before the holiday season has you spending more money than you intend.

Gay ol’ Philadelphia

Greater Philadelphia Tourism Marketing Corporation (GPTMC) Last week The Greater Philadelphia Tourism Corp shared their second commercial targeting the LGBT community to celebrate their 10th anniversary of their award-winning campaign, “Philadelphia Get Your History Straight and Your Nightlife Gay”

The humorous video features the ever so popular, Miss Richfield 1981 taking selfie’s in places of interest in Philadelphia.  I’d love to see Boston create something like this to welcome LGBT travelers.

NYC in the summah

Weekend in NYCI’m in New York City this evening for a day of meetings that start tomorrow. I love visiting NYC in the middle of the week during the summer.

The city that never sleeps seems to slow down a bit in the summer months, provided you stay away from the tourist traps.  I won’t have much free time on this trip but hope to get over to Hell’s Kitchen tonight for a bite to eat.  Anyone want to suggest where I should go? I was thinking of checking out Boxers on 9th Ave.

Bom Dia Rio de Janeiro

Rio de JaneiroIt is official, last week Sergio and I booked our tickets to Brazil and we will be returning to Rio de Janeiro in late November / early December for some rest and relaxation – and I can’t wait.

I have not been in Rio since 2008 and that is far too long to wait. Rio is one of the most amazing cities I’ve ever visited.  This aerial photo over the shoulders of the Corcovado overlooking the city pretty much says it all doesn’t it?

Ogunquit state of mind

Off to Ogunquit for the weekendA bit more than a 1 hour drive north of Boston, Ogunquit is located along the southern coast of Maine near the New Hampshire border.  Sergio and I are lucky enough to have two friends who have a home just a few minutes walk from Ogunquit’s center who each summer generously invite us and a few friends to spend a relaxing weekend in Maine.

Later this week, Sergio and I will be Ogunquit-bound, and I couldn’t be happier to join Ralph & Joao to spend a couple days in Maine.  Not familiar with Ogunquit or miss this cute seaside resort? Check out these recent posts from friends and fellow bloggers:

Alan Ilagan:  The Marginal Way at Dusk and his cheeky nude in the dunes from his post Naked at Ogunquit.

Blobby: 12 of 12 is a collection of photos of Ogunquit but if you’d prefer video check out his post, Safe Upon the Shore.

Boston Logan airport looks beyond Europe

AirplaneAlthough I’ve not been abroad for nearly 10 months, travel remains a passion so I was happy to read about Boston Logan airport in Forbes article, Boston Logan: A Major International Airport Cannot Just Serve Europe (thank you for sharing Arnie).

Although Boston is not a major hub for legacy carriers like United, Delta, US Air, etc…, it seems like each month Logan Airport announces new carriers and destinations. Forbes article addresses how our Governor has worked with the business community to court new airlines (JAL, Copa and Turkish Airlines), filling space vacated by traditional carriers like United, Delta and American.  All the while, Boston’s decision to court Jet Blue back in 2004 seems to be paying dividends too; Jet Blue now services 30% of all passengers at Logan Airport.

Have you any travel plans coming up? Do tell.

Why I take the ferry to Provincetown

Provincetown traffic

This was the article in The Boston Globe after epic traffic had many in their car for hours.  Without traffic, Boston to Ptown takes approximately 2 hours.  However, several friends spent more than 5 hours driving back home last weekend.  My advice, take the ferry if you live in Boston.

Need details about the ferry companies and schedules? Give me a shout and I’m happy to offer my advice.

Independence Day

Entering-ProvincetownJuly 4th is the day that Americans celebrate our Independence. I’m celebrating the holiday in Provincetown. Should you be in Ptown, please say hello if you see me out.

Travel tip: Know your Twitter handle

travelLet’s face it, in the past air travel may have been glamorous but whatever mystique it once had is gone, despite Richard Branson’s best efforts. The indignities that accompany air travel are only exacerbated by delays that can result from mechanical, weather or to too much air traffic.

If you happen to find yourself stuck in an airport needing to rebook or talk to someone for help, chances are the customer service desk and phone lines will be overtaxed and frustratingly slow.  It never ceases to amaze me how veteran travelers shout into their phones or wait in endless lines but never once consider Tweeting the airlines for assistance.

Last week I arrived at LaGuardia airport only to find out my 4PM shuttle had been cancelled. The befuddled agent smiled as she gave me a new ticket for the 9PM shuttle.  I didn’t bother to say anything as I could hear to my left and right agents sharing the same unwelcome news.  Instead I hopped on Twitter and contacted the airline. Within 10 minutes (from the comfort of my seat at the bar) I was placed on standby for the 5PM and guaranteed a seat on the 6PM shuttle.  Not ideal, but I leaped a line of angry fliers begging for special treatment that was never going to happen.

My travel tip to everyone is to know your airline Twitter handle.  Some airlines are better at this than others; two that I’ve used that are very responsive are JetBlue (@JetBlue) and Delta Airlines (@Delta Assist).

Have you used Twitter to help you avert any travel nightmares?  Do share.
