BosGuy brain teaser

riddle, exercise for your brainEach Friday morning I post a riddle to get you to think outside the box and exercise your brain.  If you are stumped, share it with a friend or colleague and see if you can figure out the answer together.

I’ll confirm answers in the afternoon so don’t worry if you don’t see your comment posted right away. I want to give everyone a chance to guess.

This week’s riddle: Name three consecutive days in a row without using the words, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday or Sunday (saying these words in another language doesn’t count).

Fly to the Azores for just $568 from Boston

travelFollowing my post on the CMI LGBT travel and tourism survey, I thought it would be fitting to share news about Azore Airlines sale which starts today and runs through February 28th. Their promotion which is valid for trips booked between March 27 – June 19 offer roundtrip flights from Boston to the Azores for $568 (including tax). Passengers can upgrade to Business Class for just a few hundred dollars more each way. Restrictions/blackout may dates apply in some cases. Capacity controlled and subject to availability.

Madeira Island in the Azores is approximately 750 miles southwest of Lisbon off the coast of Africa. Red volcanic cliffs that rise dramatically from the sea characterize Madeira’s fascinating landscape. The islands steep rise creates six unique climate zones, each with its own beautiful flora and fauna that contribute to the comparison of Madeira with Hawaii.

CMIs LGBT travel and tourism survey 2016

travel tipsEach year Community Marketing Inc. (CMI) share the results of their annual LGBT travel and tourism survey. This past December findings from their 2016 survey were shared after collecting and analyzing responses from more than 4,700 people. The survey focuses on travel in the United States and is of interest to those in the travel industry as well as people like yours truly who is curious to see how LGBT travelers differ from the industry-at-large.

In CMI’s survey they found that LGBT travelers want many of the same things, for example survey respondents indicated rest and relaxation was the most important aspect of their travel but people “relax” differently. In the case of travelers who identify as gay, visiting large cities, LGBT-popular destinations and nightlife were more important than lesbian travelers. More lesbians preferred visiting nature and remaining active outdoors; not much of a surprise.

The most popular destinations in the US for LGBT travelers (this includes for work and leisure) was New York City followed by San Francisco, Los Angeles, Las Vegas and Chicago. It was noted on CMI’s webcast (where they explained a lot of their findings) that Boston slipped for the first time out of the top 10, ranking 11th. It was also noted that interest in Seattle has increased and they tied for 8th most visited destination along with San Diego and Fort Lauderdale.

The survey provides more information about demographics, how the LGBT community spend their time and money when they travel. If this is of interest to you check out the link below that I’ve included or Google the survey to download and read all the findings from their 2016 survey.

About Survey Respondents: The majority of respondents identified as single gay men who earn less than $100,000. You can see the full breakdown of the demographics if you download their report if you find this sort of thing interesting: CMI LGBT Travel & Tourism Survey 2016.

I dedicate this weekly post, featuring vintage gay photographs, to the men and women who lived in a more critical time where being true to yourself and loving who you want wasn’t always an option and came at a great price. Do you have a photo you would like to share? Bad behavior

My friend Robert writes the blog Etiquetteer, and although I know he is no supporter of Donald Trump and his administration, I sorely wish he would be hired by them to offer some basic lessons in civility and manners.

Last week President Trump made disparaging remarks about Federal Justices who ruled against his temporary immigration ban and proceeded to attack them via social media, knowing that by law judges cannot respond. These actions are now becoming business as usual, and it makes me wonder how long it will take before this becomes how everyone in Washington, D.C. deals with each other. Common decency is no longer all that common, but we seem to have entered a new phase in American politics where the rude are championed – even admired – as long as you agree with their politics.

I do realize that some of my blog posts are guilty of the same rude behavior I’m decrying, but it is extremely disheartening to think that this is being encouraged by our President. I naively thought once sworn into office that President Trump might actually start to act presidential, but that hasn’t been the case. Quite the opposite seems to have happened in my opinion. It seems as if rude behavior is rewarded and this makes me wonder how this will influence society?  To quote the snooty maitre d’ from Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, “I weep for the future.”

I can’t help but laugh when I watch this video of Jarad dancing at his softball Championship game. Jarad is from New Hampshire but we met here in Boston. He’s as friendly as he is handsome which is saying something. Beware, you may be smitten if you check out his account but he is definitely worth following.

Poetry for Valentine’s Day

loveWild Nights – Wild Nights!
Were I with thee
Wild Nights should be
Our luxury!

Futile – the winds –
To a heart in port –
Done with the compass –
Done with the chart!

Rowing in Eden –
Ah, the sea!
Might I moor – Tonight –
In thee!

The perfect Valentine’s Day gift: A night with The Boston Ballet

William Forsythe, danceLater this month Artifact, opens at the Boston Opera House.  The ballet is the result of a fortunate five year relationship between The Boston Ballet and choreographer, William Forsythe.  For those unfamiliar with William Forsythe, he has been compared to Balanchine and Graham and is recognized for the way he integrates ballet and visual arts.

In this ballet from Forsythe more than 30 dancers will dance in large groups to pas de deux, transforming classical forms of ballet into post-modern structures. Forsythe has also designed the sets, costumes and lighting, ensuring that the four-act ballet will be something very special to see. Get tickets before it sells out.
