“Untitled” (Go-Go Dancing Platform), 1991

Felix Gonzalez-Torres, UCLA Hammer MuseumAre you one of those guys who doesn’t like going to museums?  Do you find them stuffy and boring? Maybe this exhibit in Los Angeles is more your speed.

Cuban artist, Felix Gonzalez-Torres’, takes the male body out of the gay club and into the museum. The installation at UCLA’s Hammer Museum consists of a lit-up platform, that is empty most of the time except for five minutes a day when a go-go dancer randomly appears. Unscheduled and unannounced, the performer dances to the music blaring from his headphones, inaudible to the guests at the museum. Not your typical installation for sure.

Thanks to Oscar Raymundo and his blog Confessions of a Boy Toy for bringing this story to my attention.

Cafe Quattro opening in the South End

Pizza, pizzeria, boston, south endBoston Restaurant Talk reports that Cafe Quattro, a popular Italian / Pizzeria with Beacon Hill residents will reopen in the South End.

Apparently the popular restaurant lost its lease in Beacon Hill after the landlord essentially forced them out to make room for a larger upscale restaurant.  Beacon Hill’s loss is the South End’s gain.  Cafe Quattro will reopen at 817 Harrison Avenue on the corner of East Springfield Street.  The owners were scheduled to go before the licensing commission this week (not sure if the weather has delayed that meeting). One hopes they will be opening soon.

About Cafe Quattro: We serve a wide array of sandwiches, panini, wraps, and pizza, as well as cappuccino, espresso, latte, and coffee.  Our breads are baked especially for us and delivered daily.  Our thin crust pizza is hand tossed and made to order, using fresh dough.  Pizza is available by the slice, small personal pies, or 20″ Large pies each made in the old fashioned Italian-American tradition.

Wine review: Seghesio Zinfandel

red wine, wine review, zinfandel, sonoma county, healdsburg wineSeghesio Family Vineyards is located in Healdsburg in Sonoma Valley, CA and it was this fact that tipped the scales when I was contemplating purchasing their 2013 Zinfandel.

Several years back Sergio and I attended a fun wedding in Healdsburg so as illogical as it may be to associate a happy occasion with good wine, I can’t help but try wines from wineries based in Healdsburg.  Thus far, I’ve not been disappointed.

As it turns out Seghesio Winery is best known for their Zinfandel, and for those (like me) who enjoy this wine, Seghesio is a solid choice that seems to produce a consistent product.  Wine Spectator has given the 2013 vintage 92-points and described it as “a lively, zesty red…”  I agree with their sentiments but would encourage you to decant the wine before serving.  I shared this wine alongside a traditional Italian American meal that included eggplant parmesan, meatballs, linguine and a rich, meaty red sauce.  It seemed to me this wine was ideally suited for the dinner and enhanced the flavors of the meal significantly.

The wine also would make for an excellent host / dinner party gift, retailing outside of California for approximately $20.

El Al airlines starts flying to Boston in 2015

Travel, air travel, BostonFive months from today El Al airlines will start flying non-stop from Boston to Israel. Unfortunately that won’t be in time for anyone attending Tel Aviv Pride, but I’m happy to see another international carrier coming to Boston’s Logan Airport.

El Al airlines joins a growing list of international carriers that have been wooed by Boston’s demographics and our former Governor, Deval Patrick, to start flying to Boston.   New international carriers who in recent years have started flying from Boston include: Copa Airlines (Panama Carrier), SATA Airlines (Azores), Turkish Airlines, Emirates, Japan Airlines, Cathay Pacific and Hainan Airlines (China) just to name a few.

Do you have plans to travel internationally in 2015? If so, do tell – where?

Coming out at work isn’t a reality for everyone

The Gay ClosetQueerty.com teamed up with Whisper to talk to LGBT employees who feel pressured to hide their identities from their bosses and coworkers for the sake of professional advancement.  The quote above is one of many that they collected and shared from their partnership.

I’m lucky enough to work where I can be honest about who I am, but the reality is that for many people this is not an option. I’d like to thank Queerty.com for reminding us that many still work in states where they can be fired for being gay and many, many more won’t come out because while they may not be fired, they know they will never advance in their career so they remain closeted.

Are you out to your coworkers? I’d like to know.

Caption this photo

men at work, construction workersYou may have noticed that on Wednesday mornings I’ve been starting to regularly post photographs that seem to ask for a creative caption.  I have to admit that some of you really rise to the challenge.  Take a crack at this week’s image of these two construction workers who seem to beg for a witty caption.

I’ll get you started with my own caption, “Much to Tom’s chagrin, Mike started singing Push It by Salt-N-Pepa.”  I’m sure you can do better. Make me laugh.

Gates Foundation has hopeful message for the world’s most poor

Gates Foundation LetterI started my career working at Microsoft so I might be biased, but there is no business leader who I more admire today than Bill Gates.  His entrepreneurial spirit was evident at Microsoft when I worked there in the 1990s and what he accomplished there is nothing short of amazing.  However, it is what he has done since leaving the helm of Microsoft that has really impressed me and in my opinion puts him on a completely different level than any of his contemporaries.

Bill and Melinda Gates have issued their 15th annual foundation letter. This letter spells out what they see as both pending challenges and advances to making the world a better, safer, and healthier place.

The Gates Foundation annual letter this year predicts that the lives of poor people will improve faster in the next fifteen years than at any other time in history. Pretty amazing and hopeful when you think about it.

If you find this sort of thing interesting, check out their annual letter here.

SnowMyGod: Images from Boston’s South End

Eat your heart out local television broadcasters.  Sergio stepped out today to check out the neighborhood.  While this may not be as large a storm as initially predicted it is still packing quite a punch.  Below are images Sergio snapped earlier today.

How much wine

winter snow storm, junoI love this picture that has been making the rounds on Instagram.   It  accurately depicts my sentiments (even if the amount of wine seems questionable).

My only beef with the image is that the circle of 15 cases should probably hover between NYC and Boston since southern New England appears to be braced for some of the largest total snowfall and biggest wind gusts.  I feel adequately prepped with my four bottles of red wine.  Are you ready?

I’m wicked funny on Twittah

Realm health and fitness tips from Kyle

absCreating your own exercise program

In this post we will breakdown “The rules” for creating a basic weight loss program.  Next week’s post will follow up and tie in how you can make sure you see continued results to hopefully help keep you motivated and committed.

For weightloss do 15-20 reps for each exercise and give your body minimal rest between full body workouts for maximum impact.

Workout structure

Choose an exercise of your own preference that focuses on the following and repeat each exercise 3-4 times (each set should include 15-20 reps):

lower body exercise – upper body pull – core exercise

(rest & repeat 3-4 times)

lower body exercise – upper body pull – upper body push

(rest & repeat 3-4 times)

The higher repetitions are suggested to help you burn more calories, but still have the benefit of muscle breakdown that will keep you burning 24-48 hours after you’re done with your work out. I recommend doing this exercise AT LEAST 3 days a week to see results, though it is possible to get away with 2 days a week if your nutrition is on point.

Income inequality? I thought you called it class warfare.

Jeb Bush, Rand Paul, Mitt Romney, politics, RepublicansIf I didn’t know any better I would think that some of the Republican Party’s leaders have started to listen to Massachusetts Senator, Elizabeth Warren.  Have you noticed that nearly every potential Republican Presidential primary candidate is all of a sudden incredibly concerned with income inequality and they blame it on President Obama and his Administration?

“While the last eight years have been pretty good ones for top earners, they’ve been a lost decade for the rest of America.”  Jeb Bush PAC mission statement

“Under President Obama the rich have gotten richer, income inequality has gotten worse and there are more people in poverty in American than ever before.”  Gov. Mitt Romney, January 2015

“Income inequality has worsened under this Administration…policies that have allowed the poor to get poorer, and the rich to get richer.”  Sen. Rand Paul, January 2015

During the last election cycle, Gov. Mitt Romney, tried to ‘humanize’ corporations to justify massive tax breaks and layoffs by imploring “corporations are people too.”, and the Republican Party found themselves defending Romney’s infamous 47% quote.  So why is the Democrats focus on ‘income inequality’ no longer considered “class warfare” by Republicans?  Who can say?  I’m glad to see the Republican Party adopt a more populist message that seems more in line with Senator Elizabeth Warren’s rhetoric, but stonewalling legislation like raising the minimum wage tells me that their actions speak louder than their words.
