Posh on Tremont to be replaced by Cambridge Trust Company

Last Sunday I posted that the space formerly occupied by Posh on Tremont,  would soon be home to Cambridge Savings Bank.  That was my mistake, the bank is actually Cambridge Trust Company.

My original post sparked a lot of conversation with many echoing my sentiments so I’m going to go one step further knowing I’ll draw a lot of heat.  I blame this scenario playing out in many of Boston’s neighborhoods squarely on the shoulders of local neighborhood associations.

These groups, supported by the City of Boston’s double standard for businesses catering to an evening crowd (e.g. restaurants, bars, entertainment venues), seem to quickly approve a bank, real estate office or any other local business that close shop by 7PM.  I understand their oversight has contributed to much of what is good about living in downtown Boston, but these groups alongside the city and BRA seem more often a bully rather than a buddy.

I’m certain if Posh was being replaced by a club, bar, restaurant, market, or any other business that provides the neighborhood with options to enjoy in the evening it would have received so much attention that my post would never have been news to anyone.

US Airforce: Sexy and I know it

This video which was posted on YouTube this past fall totally passed me by. How did I miss this? It makes the song so much less annoying when I can watch these handsome young men.

Apparently the video was created to pump up the Air Force football team before they played Army, but was deemed “too inappropriate”.  I will admit the video gets a whole lot more entertaining after the 1 minute mark as they dance around in their boxers and little else.

Fashion tip of the day: Accentuate the postive

BosGuyMy sister Susan sent me this eCard earlier this week to give me a chuckle and it reminded me of a phrase two of my friends in Atlanta use to always say, which I still believe is the golden rule when it comes to purchasing and wearing clothing.

“Just because they make it in your size

doesn’t mean you should wear it.”

No matter your body shape or size, there is clothing that can accentuate the positive.  Certain colors, cuts, prints and even fabrics all contribute to this or as is more often the case accentuate the negatives – and for the record, showing back fat is always accentuating the negative.

Chick-fil-A

I’ve decided the “A” at the end of this fast food restaurant chain stands for a word that’s not nice to say.  Can you guess the word?

Restaurant review: Lorraine’s

Lorraine’s is a Mexican restaurant located on Commercial Street in the West End of Ptown.  I’ve been coming here for more than a decade and can remember when they were located deep in the East End where the Mews is now located. However, I tend to eat at Lorraine’s less frequently, because while I genuinely enjoy the food, I cannot say the same about the dining experience or the service.

Let’s start with the food, which is the real reason to visit.  The menu has several mouth watering starters ranging from Chile Relleno de Queso for $8.50 to the most expensive option, Lobster & Shrimp Cerviche for $14.50. The main dishes all come with ample portions, smell as good as they look and offer a bit of heat. Dishes range in price from $20 – $28.  On this visit we opted to have the Lobster & Shrimp Fajitas $23.50 and the Blackened Tuna Tacos $21.00 as shown below.

Both meals were cooked perfectly.  The orange ginger yogurt sauce and crisp cabbage in my taco added a sweetish sort of flavoring and crunchy texture to the blackened tuna that made my heart skip a beat.

Food aside, dining at Lorraine’s comes at a price and its not the kind that hits your wallet.  This is one of only a few restaurants I can think of without outside dining or a view.  Adding to those detractors, each time we visit its roasting hot and the service is problematic.  Lest you think me unkind, I’ll share two examples from our most recent visit.

– It took more than 15 minutes for our two drinks (iced tea and a beer) to arrive.  Although the restaurant was still full many tables had opened and many more were signing bills rather than ordering or eating and our waiter didn’t appear particularly busy.

– One of our two orders had a substitution because of food allergies, but was delivered without the substition.  When we asked if the item could be removed; the waitresses responded “I told the kitchen“.  We sat there listening to her, expecting she’d take the plate back, but she didn’t. So after an uncomfortable few seconds my dining companion said something to the effect of, “Yes, but would you please bring this back?” She did but she didn’t seem very happy about the return trip.

I suppose my review is best summed up with this advice – give Lorraine’s a try if you like Mexican and the menu appeals to you but assume service will be problematic and if you go in the summer, barely dress to avoid sweating to death.

Lorraine’s is located at 133 Commercial Street / (508) 487-6074.

Bear culture bonus post

Gay

It is Bear Week in Provincetown so I’ve been including a bonus “Bear themed” post each day this week.  Today’s post is of the cheeky, flirtatious variety. Perhaps if you are in Ptown this week you might like to try this as a pick up line.

South End Buttery: Expansion nearly complete

Richard Gordon, owner of The South End Buttery, one of the most popular cafes in Boston and a South End juggernaut serving the neighborhood has been busy remodeling space at 312 Shawmut Ave.

This second location (literally next door to the original shop) will serve two purposes; the back will be additional space for a bakery, and the front is for take out; items available are rumored to be baked goods, food supplies and prepared dishes. All completely delicious – I’m sure.

While Richard has been mum about when work will conclude and he will be ready to open , these photos show the space is nearly ready.

Furry Friday

Boston GuyLast week’s Furry Friday post received only a handful of praise – poor guy because he really is quite handsome. This week I thought I’d try a more ethnic looking guy.

What do you think of this week’s post? Hope you have a great day and relaxing weekend.

BosGuy brain teaser

BosGuyEach Friday morning I post a riddle or what I like to call a “brain teaser”.  Share this with your colleagues or friends and leave your answer in the comments section.  I publish all comments and if needed validate the correct response in the afternoon so readers can take a fair guess. This week’s puzzle will make you think a bit, but I’m confident you will figure it out.

Below are three sets of numbers and initials that represent some commonly recognized phrases. HINT: the initials have something to do with the number.   For example, 50 S in USA is 50 States in USA.

What could the following mean?

1)  5 F on a H

2)  26 L of the A

3)  29 = Number of D in F in a L. Y.

Good Luck!

OMG

FriendsTo quote the character, Janice Litman from Friends, “Oh…My…Gawd!” This home remodeling adventure, which has been long overdue is past the point of no return. We’re now in a crunch to decide on paint color.

For those who do not know my partner or me, this is making me verklempt. So I’ll give you a topic to discuss amongst yourselves while I do my very best to pull myself together.

The phrase “home remodeling” makes no sense to me. This process has turned my home into a house and there is nothing about this process that makes me think of a model. I don’t see a photograph for the cover of a magazine.  I see a dump. They should call it House Demolition. Now discuss.

Restaurant review: Local 186

Local 186 is Provincetown’s best restaurant to grab a burger.  The new restaurant has now been open for a few months and the staff has firmly hit their stride, providing attentive service in a great setting regardless of where you choose to eat on their street side patio, large front deck or indoors.

Local 186 is open for lunch and dinner 7-days a week.  If there is a wait for a table, check out their bar on the first floor and grab a drink.  We were lucky on our most recent visit and snagged a table on the patio when we walked up to have dinner on the 4th of July.  We were hungry so we started with the restaurant’s Grilled Caesar Salad for $12 and two sides, Fried Artichoke Hearts  and Fried Avocado – each $7. Local 186 ProvincetownThe menu consists of ten house burgers including The Old-Fashioned which has bacon and cheddar; The Big-D, a Kobe beef burger with sauteed onions and blue cheese; and The Surf & Turf also with Kobe beef as well as a lump of butter poached lobster.  However, if none of the options appeal you are encouraged to make your own burger from a large selection of traditional and not so traditional ingredients.

For our dinner we opted for The Frenchie an 80z burger topped with onions, smoked gruyere and au jus for dipping $15 and  The El Guapo which comes with fried avocado and chipotle aioli $15. Local 186 Provincetown

If you are not a burger lover this is definitely not the place for you, but if the idea of having a grilled burger for lunch or dinner appeals, give Local 186 a try. I also recommend the house beer which is a light lager style brew made especially for the restaurant.

Suddenly it makes sense

Suddenly it makes senseI consider myself more of a legs kind of guy but when you have arms and shoulders like Brandon Wynn you can make me an enthusiast of watching the gymnastic rings.

Who am I kidding, the fact that I tower over 99% of all male gymnasts and would look like a giant standing next to these guys hardly prevents me from marveling at their physique and watching even the strangest of gymnastic routines whenever they are on television.

Bear culture bonus post

It is Bear Week in Provincetown so I’m including a bonus “Bear themed” post each day this week on my blog.  Today’s bonus post comes in the form of a photo of a former “Men of Twitter” and a reader of my blog.  Matt is not a bear, but I have a feeling he’d be as desirable as a big jar of honey.  Say hello to Matt who lives in Boston and leave him a nice comment.

Romney’s plastic personality

The normally tight lipped Republican Party, which is more adept than their counterparts in the Democratic Party at unifying behind one candidate has been uncharacteristically vocal about their frustrations with their candidate for President, Mitt Romney.

On June 30th  the Speaker of the House of Representatives, John Boehner said the following about Mitt Romney at a fundraiser in W VA.

“The American people probably aren’t going to fall in love with Mitt Romney. I’ll tell you this: 95 percent of the people that show up to vote in November are going to show up in that voting booth, and they are going to vote for or against Barack Obama.”  Source: Roll Call

Not exactly a ringing endorsement of the man the Republican Party is pinning their hopes on in the November election, but Boehner is correct.  This problem is somewhat unique for a party that in recent years has gone out of their way to champion national candidates who are more folksy and likable than intelligent or thoughtful (at least publicly).  Take for example President Bush who would intentionally mispronounce words to sound more down to earth or Sarah Palin who (I believe unintentionally) speaks with the grammatical correctness of a fourth grader.  Romney appears to be a far more cerebral candidate.

Mitt RomneyThe greatest threat to Obama isn’t Romney, it is the slow and unsteady economic recovery of the US economy.  This,  more than anything Romney can say or do may contribute to Obama losing to the Republican’s “unlovable candidate” to paraphrase Boehner.

However, Americans are more passionate than practical when it comes to politics and Romney’s plastic personality and reputation for taking care of the super rich is going to pose a significant challenge.  Ultimately, I think this election will be determined by which side can convince enough of their supporters to come out and vote, while Independents – frustrated by the grid-lock and fighting stay home.
