Things that make BosGuy go hmm…

Four skins wineThis is the Spectacle Group’s label design for Jost Vineyard’s.  The website says, 4 Skins wine is “sophisticated with a cheeky sense of humor.

I’m not sure if “cheeky” is exactly the body bawdy humor I’d want attributed to my wines but it certainly makes for a good gag gift I suppose.

Fitness tips from Kris Kranzky

Fitness tipsFor the past few weeks I’ve been posting fitness tips from my trainer Kris Kranzky from the Boston Sports Club in the South End.  In previous week’s tips have included: scheduling time to work out, finding the right balance, and mixing up your work out routine.  This week’s tip deals more with decisions made outside of the gym.

A sensible diet is key: It is important to consume a variety of carbs, fats and proteins in your diet. Try to eat a range of fresh fruits, vegetables and lean proteins.  Natural sources of fat from foods like avocados, olives, nuts and types of fish in moderation is okay too.  As a rule of thumb, your total fat consumption should be 15-30% of total daily calorie intake.

Last week’s tip.

Broadway Bares XXII: Happy Endings

Broadway CaresLater this week on Sunday, June 17th Broadway Bares XXII: Happy Endings will take place at the Roseland Ballroom, with two shows 9:30PM and Midnight.  This annual show and gala raises money for Broadway Cares: Equity Fight AIDS. This year’s show is inspired by fairy tales but perhaps a bit more naughty than you may recall.

For those who were not fortunate enough to get tickets, I thought I’d include the teaser video that was created.  Enjoy the eye candy.

Boston Pride

Beautiful weather all weekend brought people out for Pride weekend in Boston.  As usual the Boston Pride parade was mostly forgettable, but the weekend proved to be a lot of fun.

Festivities started on Friday evening at the Boston Chapter of GLAAD cocktail reception.  On Saturday, after the parade I went to the “unofficial” block party on Chandler Street  dancing and chatting with friends while enjoying the beautiful weather.  The only frustration was the long lines to get drinks.  Hopefully they’ll figure out how to fix that for 2013 Pride (hint hint).

Sunday’s block party in the Back Bay turned out to be the big surprise. DJ Tracy Young kept the crowd of thousands in a frenzy for hours and capped off one of the best Pride Weekends in recent memory.  I’m pulling together a video but wanted to share a few fun pics from the weekend.

BosGuy and Matt Kurkowski

Hanging with the handsome and flirtatious Matt Kurkowski at Boston Pride’s 2012 Sunday block party.  This former Men of Twitter (from May 2011) is a great guy. If you are on Twitter check out and follow Matt at @MKurkowski.

My crazy partner

Work has brought me into New York City for a couple of days.  My lunatic of a boyfriend emailed me this video of himself to make me laugh and remember to call him.  I thought I’d upload it to YouTube so everyone could see my crazy partner; and by the way  I called him – definitely.

Temptation Tuesday

Boston GuyFeeling tempted? I think this guy is both handsome and obviously in great shape. What do you think of this week’s Temptation Tuesday post?

Rafael Nadal

Rafa NadalRafael “Rafa” Nadal from Spain won a record 7th French Open in a four set match that had repeated stops due to rain and spanned two days.  With this win, Nadal has now surpassed Sweden’s Bjorn Borg’s record and tied the record held by American, Chris Evert, for the most French Open titles.  It’s hard to imagine this 26 year old not winning another in his career an d one can only imagine how many French Open Championships he’ll collect in his career. Well done Rafa.

Joe Manganiello

If you are gay look closely at the photograph below. There are actually three people in this photograph.  I only saw Joe Manganiello. Really, when you look below, can you blame me?

GLAAD Boston Pride reception at Emerald Lounge

The Boston chapter of Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) hosted a cocktail party at the new Revere Hotel’s swanky Emerald Lounge on Friday, June 8th.  The sold out event was a great way to start the weekend.

The event was mostly attended by gregarious 20 and 30 something gay men who were looking forward to mingle and enjoy the Ketel One Vodka drinks being liberally poured by a hard working and attentive Emerald Lounge Staff.  I created a quick 2 minute video compilation of photos from the cocktail reception.

Men of Twitter

Each Monday I post #MenOfTwitter profiles of men who catch my eye and whom I think you may enjoy following.  This month I’m featuring Twitter profiles of men who are lending their voice and influence to fight for greater equality.

Darryl Stephens actorDarrylStephens – Darryl’s role as the lead actor in Noah’s Arc a show that first aired back in 2005 was ground breaking in many ways since it revolved around gay black men.  Stephens came out in 2007 and although very private remains an excellent role model. In light of the recent guerrilla art campaign in Boston Would you still love me if I were gay, I thought it appropriate to feature Darryl.

Wcruz73 – Wilson Cruz also starred in Noah’s Arc.  He’s not only unbelievably attractive but he’s an out and proud actor. Although he’s from NYC, Wilson now lives in Southern California and is working on a number of projects but best of all for those on Twitter – Wilson is active on Tweeter and very friendly.

Restaurant review: Island Creek Oyster Bar

ICOBIsland Creek Oyster Bar (ICOB) opened in the Hotel Commonwealth two years ago to much fanfare, but I’d not visited til now.  Upon entering I immediately liked the vibe of this energetic, modern looking restaurant and raw bar.  I was seated near the back of this cavernous restaurant near a wall of oyster shells held back by metal mesh.

Perhaps it was the name of the restaurant or proximity of all those oyster shells, but we started our meal with a sampling of oysters that included: Island Creek –  MA; East Beach Blonde – RI; Hama Hama – WA; and Kumamoto – WA.  While I enjoyed them all, my favorites were the East Beach Blonde from RI and the Hama Hama from WA visible on the left side of the image below. The menu is nearly all raw bar, shell fish and seafood with main courses ranging in price from $21-$32; note the menu changes regularly and pricing fluctuates. Cheaper options are available including a Fish & Chips I saw served which looked delicious for $15.

The staff was very helpful through out our meal and despite bringing us the wrong bottle of wine service was flawless.  I ordered the Point Judith Fluke (shown below) with porcini and morel mushroom risotto and English peas for $25.  The fish was perfectly prepared and the risotto so creamy it had me scraping the plate to eat every last morsel.

I’d highly recommend trying this restaurant and raw bar, but would suggest visiting the first half of the week when it is less crowded.  Although ICOB is always busy so it goes without saying that reservations are most definitely recommended.

Happy Birthday: MBTA Orange Line turns 111

MBTAThe MBTA Orange Line (one of Boston’s Metro Lines) turns 111 years old today.  Back when this line started passengers paid $.05.  Apparently demand for the service was underestimated and the line was plagued with overcrowding and delays. Hmm… here we are 111 years later and it seems like those problems persist.

Regardless, of the ills that can sometimes plague this often maligned subway line, I have to say Boston just wouldn’t be the same without it. The Boston Globe has a collection of photographs chronicling the history of the Orange Line which you can peruse here.

Hotel review: Westin Philadelphia

Located in the heart of Philadelphia this Starwood property is near Rittenhouse Square close to many of the city’s attractions and business district. Although I was only there briefly, the Westin Philadelphia lived up to its brand reputation for providing professionals a comfortable place to stay.

The rooms at this Westin did not appear to be as new as the Westin Copley, but my room was still comfortable with a sizable room, nice bathroom, good work space and of course their heavenly bed.Gay TravelI spent very little time at this property since work brought me to Philadelphia, so I cannot even tell you if one side provides a better view than another, but I can speak to the convenience of the location which is why I will stay here again on my next visit to Philadelphia. Below is a photo of the bathroom with the dual-headed shower that Westin properties have for hotel guests. You can contact the Westin Philadelphia for more details about this property on its website here.

Boston Pride

Boston PrideBoston’s Pride parade is today along with its much more interesting block party over on Chandler Street. Since the block party is not officially part of Boston Pride, all donations will go to the AIDS Action Committee. Hope to see you there.
