Happy Birthday Fenway Park

100 Years ago on April 20, 1912, Fenway Park opened to the public.  The future grandfather of President John F. Kennedy and Mayor of Boston, John F. “Honey Fitz” Fitzgerald,  threw out the opening pitch for the game between the Boston Red Sox and New York Highlanders (the team was renamed the New York Yankees the following year).

In an age where cities and sports teams view their ballparks as disposable assets, Fenway and its sister park Wrigley Field in Chicago stand apart. Both are beautiful examples of how the homes of sports teams can create and build a cult following.  Make no mistake that much of the mystique that surrounds the Red Sox is due to its hallowed home, Fenway Park.  And what a beautiful home it is.

Tweet of the Day: James Van Der Beek

Earlier this week James Van Der Beek gave me a shout out on Twitter by retweeting me to his more than 137,000 followers. I thought it was pretty cool and didn’t mind the attention from such a handsome guy. Yeah, I suppose I’m a bit shallow like that.

Furry Friday

This weekly post is quickly becoming a favorite. I have to admit I share your same base appreciation and am curious if you have any submissions you think would make for good future Furry Friday posts. Hope you enjoy this week’s post.

BosGuy brain teaser

Each Friday I pose a riddle for those who like that sort of thing. I freely admit that many of these stump me, but perhaps you’ll be able figure out this week’s riddle.

I am only useful when I am full yet I am always full of holes.

Revere Hotel in Boston opens

The Revere, Boston’s newest luxury boutique hotel has opened.  This hotel, which straddles the Theater District and Bay Village neighborhoods was previously The Radisson Boston, but as you can see from the photos in my post, the property was completely remodeled.

Revere has 356 contemporary guestrooms.  The property indicates their focus is not to meet guest expectations but to exceed them.  How will they do that? Great service and providing guests a unique experience by providing perks such as Kindles for loan.  Sounds good to me.

Check out their rather provocative Fashion Show

Do you have travel plans that will bring you to Boston? Maybe you’d like to consider a stay at Revere Hotel. The boutique hotel is conveniently located just blocks from some of Boston’s most popular gay bars and centrally located to most of the city’s downtown attractions.

In honor of Paul Revere’s famous ride on the night of April 18th, 1775 the Revere is offering an opening rate of $177.50 (plus tax), which will be available through May.

Mary Poppers

Ryan Landry and his Gold Dust Orphans announced their latest twisted musical, Mary Poppers.  This latest production begins one week from tonight with performances on Thursday – Saturday at 8PM and Sundays at 5PM from April 26th – May 20th at Machine, which is located at 1254 Boylston Street.

The brief release issued earlier this month suggests attendees should expect “big splashy musical numbers, flying nannies, puppets galore and more surprises than you can shake a parrot head umbrella at!” Hmm… sounds promising. It makes me wonder how Ryan Landry has reworked such classics like “Spoonful of Sugar”, “Chim Chim Cher-ee” and of course, “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious”.

For those unfamiliar with Landry and his cast of misfits (The Gold Dust Orphans) this is most definitely not kid-friendly.  Tickets are a bargain at $35.00 so reserve your tickets online today, hereIf you cannot see the show in Boston, never fear Landry will be bringing Mary Poppers to the Crown & Anchor in Provincetown starting Tuesday, June 26th.

Revere Hotel Boston: Fashion Show

Photo by: Dominick Reuter / EPA

The Revere Hotel celebrated its grand opening yesterday with a jaw dropping vertical fashion show that had models walk down the face of the 24-story hotel exterior wearing outfits created by students from Massachusetts College of Arts & Design and by Ted Baker London.

I love this photo taken by Dominick Reuter / EPA of  Mike Barron who is wearing an outfit created by Ted Baker London.

You can see more photos from the event here.

South End – South Boston Harborwalk Forestation Project

Based on votes from the public, Odwalla will provide $10,000 grants to 10 of the 20 proposed projects listed on their Plant a Tree website.

I’d like to ask you to vote for a project that has been proposed near where I live called the Harbor Walk Forestation Project.

Follow the link below and scroll to the second  page where the vote for the Harborwalk Forestation Project is posted.

To show you exactly what I’m talking about you can watch this quick video of Bob Gleason which shows where these trees would be planted.

“I was a severely conservative Republican” – Mitt Romney

Now that the Republican Presidential primary season has essentially ended, President Obama’s re-election team has released this video.

Suddenly it makes sense

Last week I included a post by the same name but was referring to soccer.  This week I stumbled upon a photograph of college football players and I’m sure you can agree the appeal of this strange game all of a sudden makes perfect sense.

The impact of the Occupy movement

Could the Occupy Movement’s theme of “fairness” be resonating? Frustration with executive pay and income disparity is a cornerstone to this movement, and part of the reason their protests took off in 2011.

Yesterday CitiGroup became the first major business that I’m aware of to get a “thumbs down” over proposed compensation for approving pay for its CEO by it’s share holders.  The embarrassing snub to Vikram Pandit’s pay is not quite a trend but it is noteworthy considering this is one of Wall Street’s and our nation’s largest companies.

Considering the horrible job Pandit has done the snub hardly seems to be without merit. In 2011 Pandit’s pay was $14.8 million. If this was a Tweet, I’d feel compelled to end it with #Occupy, because as more time passes the more I sympathize and identify with this movement.

Restaurant review: Talula’s Garden in Philadelphia

On a recent business trip to Philadelphia I had dinner at Talula’s Garden  a fantastic restaurant in Philadelphia’s Washington Square that provides a whimsical atmosphere and relaxed dining experience.

Cheese lovers should try one of Talula’s six different cheese platters, which range from $14-$20 and are a great start or finish to any meal.  Below is “Bring on the Funk” which includes six delicious cheeses with truffle honey for some added decadence.  Since we were sharing this, I only sampled the humboldt fog, a goat’s cheese from California, which was creamy and pungent. Below the cheese is the starter I ordered, raw line-caught tuna with roasted baby carrots, whipped avocado, endive and sun flower seeds for $14.  It proved to be refreshing and light – a perfect start to my dinner.  The whipped avocado was such a delicious accompaniment I practically scraped my plate to get every last bit.

Some of the meals served appeared quite small (notably the house special), but my dinner was ample and every bit as delicious as the description: sliced, roasted hanger steak with potato puree, maitake mushrooms, sweet candy onions in a classic French sauce made of dry red wine, bone marrow, butter,  and shallots called a Bordelaise-sauce.  No matter what you call it the dinner was perfectly cooked and may be the best I’ve had in recent memory.Executive Chef, Sean McPaul, managed to woo and seduce my taste buds and gave me my first memorable dinner in the city of Brotherly Love.  If you are looking for a place to try in Philadelphia I’d strongly recommend making reservations at Talula’s Garden.

Fenway Park

Boston Red SoxYesterday I went to Fenway Park for the first time this season.  The weather could not have been better with the sun shining and temperatures in the upper 80s it seemed more like August than April. Unfortunately the Red Sox lost but it didn’t take away from our fun. Below are few photos of Fenway Park; the oldest Major League Baseball field.  Later this week Fenway will celebrate it’s 100th birthday.
