Octavia Spencer named Hasty Pudding’s 2017 Woman of the Year

theaterCongratulations to Octavia Spencer  who was named the Hasty Pudding Woman of the Year 2017. She not only starred in one of my favorite movies The Help, but her pie scene in that movie is perhaps among my favorites ever. That movie earned her a well deserved 2012 Academy Award, BAFTA Award, Golden Globe Award and SAG Award just to name a few. Past recipients of the Hasty Pudding Woman of the Year include: Meryl Streep, Debbie Reynolds, Katharine Hepburn, Julia Roberts, Jodie Foster, Dame Helen Mirren and most recently Kerry Washington.

Hasty Pudding Theatricals is the oldest theater organization in the country. Every year, the group honors a man and a woman who’ve made significant contributions to the entertainment world then, they roast the winners and host a parade in Harvard Square. Spencer will come to Harvard on January 26, 2017 to pick up her well deserved award.

Advocate list of queerest cities is a waste of time

advocate-queerest-cities-in-america

Despite using San Francisco’s skyline to promote their findings, San Francisco barely cracks the Top 20 based on The Advocate’s pointless metrics to create this joke of a list.

I’ll be the first to admit that I enjoy unscientific “Best of” lists and have been known to include many of them on this blog, but The Advocate’s annual list of “Queerest Cities” in America is a waste of time. Using random metrics like tour dates from a gay duo and number of gay rodeos as criteria to create their list makes me wonder why even bother?

In their latest ranking New York City, Los Angeles and Chicago don’t even make their list of 25 cities. Never mind the fact that arguably the gay capital of the US, San Francisco (which is also the skyline they use to promote the list) ranks 17th yet Irvine, CA is ranked 10th and Miami ranks 16th with St. Petersburg (a.k.a. retirement capital of the east coast) is ranked 3rd.

Perhaps the oddest finding is ranking Jersey City, NJ as America’s Queerest City. What’s the point Advocate? Are you just trying to keep your journalists busy?

This week I’m featuring my cousin, Matt Albiani. Matt is a successful fashion photographer as well as an entrepreneur who started Mate Gallery. Most of his photos on IG are of Montauk where he spends his summer, NYC where he lives and his photo shoots and travels. As you might guess, his account features some beautiful photos and I think is really worth checking out.

Troquet Boston to close and reopen in Leather District

Boston dining, restaurant

Troquet announced today that after 15 years in business at 140 Boylston Street the restaurant will close on Saturday, January 28th only to move and open in a larger space in the Leather District in early February. Details about the new space were not mentioned in the media release, although it did allude to a larger kitchen and wine cellar as well as more bar space, which will make it far easier to grab a drink than their current location which I believe can only seat 6-8 people.

I’ve had several meals at Troquet over the years, in part because they are so conveniently located in Boston’s Theater District, making it a great place to grab a meal before or after a show. You can read my restaurant review: Troquet Boston is a wine lovers restaurant.

I’ll share more about Troquet’s new home when I learn more. Stay tuned.

ryan-reynolds-hasty-pudding-man-of-the-year-2017Earlier this month it was announced that Ryan Reynolds will be awarded the Hasty’s Pudding Man of the Year 2017. The producer and Golden Globe-nominated actor will come to Harvard Square to recieve his pudding pot on Friday, February 3. There’s no word on the theatrical group’s Woman of the Year award just yet.

Hasty Pudding Theatricals is the oldest theater organization in the country. Every year, the group honors a man and a woman who’ve made significant contributions to the entertainment world. Then, they roast the winners and host a parade in Harvard Square. Reynolds is the 51st recipient of the Man of the Year award, which was established in 1963.

Shepard Fairey, We The People Kickstarter campaign

Shepard Fairey is once again using his art to make a political statement, and I couldn’t be happier to say that I’ve donated to the We The People Kickstarter campaign, which closes this Tuesday, to show my support.

The campaign which includes works from Shepard Fairey, Jessica Sabogal, and Ernesto Yerena has raised nearly $830,000 from more than 13,000 individual donors. The money will be used to take out full page advertisement the day of Trump’s Coronation Inauguration in The Washington Post and include posters for people to hold along the parade route in Washington, D.C.

If you would like to learn more about the campaign and possibly make a donation as well you can visit We The PeopleWe the People

Tomorrow is Martin Luther King Day and while I will be working, the holiday is observed by many companies and organizations here in Boston. There are lots of events taking place in and around Boston paying tribute to King’s legacy. In honor of King, two of my favorite museums are open and free to the public.

Should you have the day off stop by and check out either the Isabella Stewart Gardner or the Museum of Fine Arts on Monday.

Bullfinch Crossing development by Gov’t Center

The HYM Investment Group, Government Center Garage Redevelopment, Boston RealestateThe demolition of the hideous Government Center garage is underway according to the website bldup.com. Replacing the ugly garage will be “Bulfinch Crossing”, (referred by many as Government Center Garage Redevelopment). The massive project that totals 2.9 million square feet will include a pedestrian-friendly streetscape, plaza and six mixed-use buildings on two blocks spanning 4.8 acres. The development is sandwiched between Government Center, The North End, Beacon Hill and The West End.

When fully built, there will be 800+ housing units, 200 hotel rooms, 1.15 million gross square feet of office space and 82,500 gross square feet of retail space at Bulfinch Crossing. The reconfigured garage will contain approximately 1,100 parking spaces which is significantly less than the original garage held but the transformation will hopefully be worth it.

U2 Joshua Tree tour coming to Boston June 25

u2-joshua-tree-tourPerhaps you didn’t hear but earlier this week the rock band U2 announced that they would go on a 25 city stadium tour around the world in honor of the 30th anniversary of their Joshua Tree album which sold more than 25 million records and went on to win a Grammy for Album of the Year in 1987.

The band will perform the album in its entirety each night. Speaking to the media, U2 guitarist, The Edge, said, “It seems like we have come full circle from when ‘The Joshua Tree’ songs were originally written, with global upheaval, extreme right-wing politics and some fundamental human rights at risk. To celebrate the album – we decided to do these shows; it feels right for now.”

U2 will come to Boston for one night on Sunday, June 25th. You can find more information about tickets which go on sale this Monday here.
