Smile it is 2015

handsome, hunk, gay, black manWhat will you do to make the most of your year?  I am focusing on my personal fitness and health, career objectives, will travel to new destinations and hopefully make a few new friends along the way.  However you spend the year,  I want to wish you all the best.

The man candy photo was really just to get your attention so I could share my message.  After all these years, I know how to get your attention 😉

Looking beyond marriage equality in 2015

NoH8, Same Sex Marriage, Gay Rights, LGBT equalityTen years after Massachusetts became the first state to legalize same sex marriage, the United States finally hit a tipping point in 2014. As the Freedom to Marry image above shows, a jaw-dropping 18 cases were won in court in some of the most unlikely states like Utah, Oklahoma and Arizona.

All of these decisions stem from the historic SCOTUS rulings from the summer of 2013, that I attribute to the support the Obama administration and Obama’s personal message of acceptance.  Something to think about as we begin 2015.

It is my hope that the remaining 15 US states accept marriage equality in 2015 so LGBT couples may legally marry anywhere in the US.  There are more pressing  issues facing our community in other countries where men and women face far greater challenges and need our support.  Our money and efforts to organize needs to take more of a global focus in 2015 so we help end discrimination, bullying and homophobic laws around the world.

Happy New Year

Happy New Year

Leonardo DiCaprio, New Years, toast, champagneI can’t believe that the year is ending.  I started 2014 very concerned about Sergio’s father who was gravely ill.  Sergio had to rush back to Brazil and ended up spending nearly a month there.  Now we are ending the year in Brazil – Sao Paulo to be precise and while a lot has changed, much remains the same.

Sergio and I had a great year and despite his father’s failing health most everyone else in our lives has been healthy and happy.  We were able to spend time with family, make new friends and deepen friendships with others.  I would like to wish you health and happiness in 2015. For those who have yet to find what they are looking for – I wish you patience and luck in attaining it.  Happy New Year.

Most popular New Year resolutions

Resolutions revisited NYEWith the start of the new year 2015 just hours away many people will make resolutions.  According to one US government website the following were the most popular New Year resolutions made by Americans for 2014.

The resolutions have links to US Gov’t sites intended to help people.  Assuming that these remain consistent from year to year I thought I would include them. Will you be making any resolutions this year and if so, will any of these make your list for 2015?

Choose your underwear wisely

New Years Eve UnderwearTomorrow is New Year’s Eve day… Choose what you wear wisely and have a wonderful evening.  I might try to hedge my bets and buy some rainbow colored underwear before the day is done.

2014 Boston rental market up 2.3 percent

boston real estate, luxury apartments, zumperBoston’s rental market can be best described in one word, “outrageous”.  My post from earlier this month, What you pay in boston neighborhoods per square foot, only reinforced that point.  Zumper.com has released information showing modest decreases in neighborhoods overrun with “luxury” apartments, but for everyone else rents continue to rise in and around Boston.

I suppose it is no surprise that rents have soared in the West Broadway section of Southie and Coolidge Corner, although I will admit I was surprised to see rents continue to climb in my neighborhood, South End.

Fire and Ice Festival moved to Jan 2-4

The Lawn on D, Winter on D, BostonThe Fire and Ice Festival on South Boston’s “The Lawn D” had to be postponed in December due to unseasonably mild temperatures.  The festival will now take place starting on Friday, January 2, 2015 at 4PM.  Organizers are calling the Winter on D programming for this weekend, “Fire and Ice Festival”.

Boston Magazine wrote in December that The Lawn on D will be “transformed into a winter wonderland during the daytime portions of the festival, with “hotter” entertainment lined up for the evenings.”   The “icy” features from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days will include the following:

• A winter-themed pavilion with ice bar serving beer, wine, and hot cocoa
• A giant five-foot-tall, 50′ x-50′ ice labyrinth with ice sculpture designs
• Food trucks

Evening “fire” programming runs  from 5 to 8 p.m. and includes:

• Live fire art performers from American Repertory Theater and the Oberon
• Free chowder samples from Legal Sea Foods
• Propane fire pits will be set up for visitors to warm up around

The Lawn on D  is in Southie at 420 D St. More info here: lawnond.com.

Realm health and fitness tips from Kyle

realm health and fitness tips from kyleCarbs, Fats and Proteins:  Your easy guide to reaching your New Years’ resolutions of losing weight

Carbs from breads, pastas, grains, etc…  If you are trying to lose fat you may want to consider cutting back on these types of foods so they only comprise 10% – 20% of your overall diet.  It is best to eat carbohydrate dense foods after an intense workout.

Fats from eggs, meats, nuts, avocados, beef, fish etc…  This should comprise 20%-40% of your intake and can be eaten through out the day as part of each meal you consume.

Proteins from chicken, beef, fish, pork, yogurt, cheese etc..  These should also be a part of every meal and a good rule of thumb for portion control is to have 2 palm sized portions.

In short, always eat sensibly and ensure you have a protein, a healthy fat, and variety of vegetables with every meal.  This combined with exercise will help you lose weight and be healthy.

BosGuy’s 5 restaurant trends for 2015

City of BostonIn 2014 the Boston restaurant industry seemed to finally hit its stride with more openings than I can recall in recent years.  An improving economy and some interesting local legislative initiatives – notably the addition of 75 new liquor licenses – all helped to contribute to this. While some restaurants closed their doors in 2014 it seems like there was twice that number opening.  Here are five trends that I believe you can expect to see in Boston in 2015.  Let me know your thoughts and feel free to share your own predictions.

Celebrity Chefs: More big name, nationally recognized chefs will open restaurants in Boston.  Mario Batali’s Babbo Pizzeria which is expected to open in the Seaport is just one example.  Expect announcements from local chefs of note to announce new restaurants (hint: think Ink) in the first half of 2015.

Seaport, South End & Southie: Developments in the Seaport will keep the neighborhood in the news with more high profile restaurant openings. However, Southie and the South End will continue to see more restaurant openings as well.

Shared Plates: Dining trends continue to point to small / shared plate options. I will admit this trend confounds me but recent and soon-to-be openings continue to show an appetite on the part of chefs to build these menus.

Bigger:  Restaurants in Boston will get bigger and build even larger bars that are prominently featured in an open dining space that encourages a more social dining experience.

Late Night Dining: More restaurants in Boston’s downtown neighborhoods will experiment with staying open and serving food later as millennials look for more options after Midnight and the city becomes more accustomed to the Late Night T service.
