BosGuy brain teaser

riddle, exercise for your brainEach Friday morning I post a riddle to get you to think outside the box and exercise your brain. If you are stumped, share it with a friend or colleague and see if you can figure out the answer together.

I’ll confirm answers in the afternoon so don’t worry if you don’t see your comment posted right away. I want to give everyone a chance to guess.

This week’s brain teaser:

I am sweet and pleasurable but remove one letter and I become hot and uncomfortable. What am I?

What to do this weekend

handsome, hunk, gay, muscles, sportsThere is a lot happening in Boston, but everyone (that is except Sergio and I) is talking about the Super Bowl – or as I’m referring to it, “the JT show”.

If you’d like to watch the game at a local bar, my advice would be to arrive early since they will fill quickly. Many will gather at The Alley and Trophy Room, but no gay bar will be busier than Cathedral Station Superbowl Party LII, which starts at 3PM on Sunday. They also have a Super Bowl Pre Party on Friday evening to get you pumped for the main event on Sunday.

Goodbye dry January

Leonardo DiCaprio, New Years, toast, champagne

On a whim, I decided the morning of January 1st that I would refrain from any alcohol for the month of January; sometimes referred to as ‘dry January’. For many people I’m sure this wouldn’t be an issue but I admit I was unsure how this would go since I basically drink coffee, water and wine.

Now that the month has passed I have to admit I was surprised by how easy it was (and how much money I saved). I’m not so certain this would be as easy to do during the summer months but I am considering trying this again, possibly later this year. However, for now I’m going to celebrate the end of dry January by going to the Godfrey Hotel’s second anniversary bash. I think we can all agree that the swanky Godfrey Hotel and its delicious restaurant Ruka which I previously reviewed here is a great place to enjoy a delicious cocktail or two.

Vintage gay

This week’s vintage gay photograph comes from the homohistory blog. The date and location remain unknown but what would be your guess?

I dedicate this weekly post, featuring vintage gay photographs, to the men and women who lived in a more critical time where being true to yourself and loving who you want wasn’t always an option and came at a great price. Do you have a photo you would like to share? This week on Instagram: victorborbolla

Victor Borbolla, Javier PerezI stumbled upon this Instagram account more by accident than design when I read an article about Victor and his high school sweetheart (and now husband), Javier Perez. Apparently they first met in high school in Miami and have more or less been together ever since. As you might imagine, these two handsome Cubans have a lot of photos and their love for each other is plainly evident in Victor’s IG account.

I believe they now live in NYC. Some Facebook snooping suggests that you may be able to find Victor behind the bar at The Hardware Bar. Regardless, I hope you enjoy their IG account as much as I do.

The Welcoming Committee

The Welcoming CommitteeThe Welcoming Committee (a.k.a. TWC) is a social group that believes in (and works to) broaden the spectrum of what gay life has to offer. Staff and volunteers help create and enrich our local community by bringing people together and organizing programs that go beyond traditional gay venues. Their events include everything from social mixers to organizing meet ups at sports events and even planning trips like next week’s WoW weekend at Sunday River. The organization is mostly comprised of 20- and 30-somethings but all are welcome.

You can learn more about TWC by visiting, thewelcomingcommittee.com and liking their Facebook page. One of their signature events is the monthly Guerrilla Queer Bar (GQB for short) which happens the first Friday of every month.

Many use the New Year as an opportunity to make resolutions. A common resolution is to be more active and meet people, but that can be difficult for gay men in Boston. Starting in 2018 I want to feature the many groups and organizations that help people connect and enrich Boston’s gay life. If you would like to have your club / team featured please reach out to me.

I may be getting a bit ahead of myself, but I just learned that a book came out this past fall called 101 Men In Kilts shot by photographer, Bob McDevitt (check out his website, bobmcdevitt.co.uk). The book which retails for $15.00 on Amazon could make for a great Valentine’s Day gift for the right guy.

Hey women of America: Step up to the plate

Much is being made of the fact that more women are expressing an interest in politics (at all levels, municipal, state and federal) than ever before, but  it remains to be seen how many will actually step up to the plate. I hope that this talk becomes a catalyst that will see more women, reaching out to their spouses and families, asking them for help with regards to family responsibilities so they may focus on a career of civil service.

I have come to the conclusion that political progress on issues that matter most to women will only be incremental if women from both political parties do not step forward in large numbers.

We are a nation of 320+ million people. There is not a job in america that couldn’t be filled by a qualified woman today.

I recognize that not all women agree on policy and politics, but greater representation is the key to women advancing their interests whether it is equal pay, better access to healthcare and childcare or reshaping how America interacts with the world. We are a nation of 320+ million people. That means there are enough women qualified to do any job including US Senator and Representative. So I’m asking the women of America to step away from the sheet cake, and step up to the plate in 2018.
