Lovejoy Wharf in Boston
Late last week new renderings of Lovejoy wharf where shared. Lovejoy wharf is located between the North End and Charlestown and it is a highly visible building for anyone coming into Boston on I-93 north of the city so when plans were announced to renovate this eyesore everyone cheered.
Included above is a photograph of Lovejoy wharf before construction started and a rendition of what the wharf will look like when construction is finished in the spring of 2015. The project will transform the decrepit building into a 187,000 square foot headquarters for Converse, residential units, ground floor shops and a new restaurant. Next to the building a new floating dock and public access to a new visitor’s center will be included.

Most Bearish US Cities
I love these unscientific survey and I hope you do too. GROWLR has recently issued a list of their top ‘bearish’ cities in the US. I was surprised to see that Atlanta topped the list and skinny Los Angeles was ranked 4th — really?
I would’ve expected gay meccas like San Francisco and NYC topping the list and colder cities like Chicago, Cleveland, Pittsburgh, St. Louis and Detroit all ranking higher.

Hedwig and the Angry Inch on Broadway in April
Looks like I need to book a trip to New York City this spring when Neil Patrick Harris stars in Hedwig and the Angry Inch. I LOVE this movie and can only imagine how fantastic it will be when it opens on Broadway in April. Not familiar with the 2001 film starring John Cameron Mitchell? Check out the movie trailer I’ve included.

Brazil one week from today
One week from today (actually right about now) I’ll be heading to the airport to fly down to meet Sergio in Brazil. Our trip this year is tinged with a bit of sadness as I head down to see Sergio’s Dad who’s health has rapidly declined over the past year.
On a happier note, after spending a few days in Belo Horizonte, Sergio and I will fly to Rio de Janeiro where we will meet a couple of friends and spend a fun week vacationing along Ipanema Beach. I’m looking forward to the warmth and energy of Rio.
Blogging will slow a bit while I”m away, but I’ve scheduled posts regularly and will check in to accept comments so keep ’em coming.
South End restaurant gossip: jm Curley’s to move into 28 degrees space
In late October I heard rumors that jm Curley in DTX was considering opening a new location in the space formerly occupied by 28 degrees in the South End. However, when I contacted Suzanne Dagenais – GM for jm Curley & Bogie’s Place – she responded that the ownership remained open to new ventures but there would not be “any more jm Curley’s in the South End or elsewhere.”
Fast forward to mid-November and word on the street is that the owners of jm Curley have inked a deal that will have them moving into the space formerly occupied by 28 degrees. If this turns out to be true it will be great to have them in the neighborhood. Not familiar with jm Curley’s? Check out their website, jmcurleyboston.com.
UPDATE – NOV 15: I was contacted again by Suzanne Dagenais. She confirmed the owners are looking at this space, but have not finalized negotiations (this runs counter to what I was told about the deal being inked).
According to Suzanne, should a deal go through, the space would be for a separate concept not yet determined. It is hard for me to believe that owners would agree to move into such an expensive space and not have a full business plan if only so they can get financing. What I’ve concluded from Suzanne’s email is it is unlikely jm Curley’s will open, but the owners are probably looking at a higher end option to make the space economically viable.
Could the soon to be departing jm Curly chef Sam Monsour be involved with the jm Curley’s owners in this new space? Time will tell I suppose. More about Chef Sam Monsour’s departure can be found in EaterBoston’s article.
Legal Sea Foods “brain food” campaign
This past spring Boston’s seafood restaurant chain, Legal Sea Foods, launched their “brain food” ad campaign. The humorous campaign includes the tag line “Fish is brain food. We have fish.” alongside photos like the one shown. You can see the full collection of images by linking to their Facebook page, here.
Bob Mizer and Tom of Finland exhibit at MOCA
The Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles is the first American museum exhibition devoted to Bob Mizer and Touko Laaksonen (a.k.a. “Tom of Finland”). The exhibition features a selection of Tom of Finland’s drawings and collages, alongside Mizerâs rarely seen photo-collage “catalogue boards” and films, as well as a comprehensive collection of his groundbreaking magazine Physique Pictorial, where drawings by Tom were first published in 1957.
The exhibit opened earlier this month in Los Angeles and runs through January 26, 2014. Do you live in Los Angeles or have plans to visit in the coming weeks? You may want to check out this exhibit. I would love to see something like this come to the ICA Boston. More information is available on MOCA’s website here.
2013 Toys for Joys one month from today
The holiday season may not be on your radar right now. I know it isn’t on mine, but I wanted to remind you that one month from today is the 2013 Toys for Joys.
The venue has changed and there is now a small registration fee so be sure to register early to ensure you may join what I think is the best holiday party fundraiser in Boston.

I’m a fairly good cook thanks to my Mom who always encouraged me in the kitchen and I actually cook several homemade meals every week. I know a lot of people think all I do is eat out, but I do enjoy cooking. For example, this weekend I roasted a bunch of veggies, made a ridiculous amount of what turned out to be delicious red sauce, approximately 18 meatballs and one of my better eggplant Parmesan.
I make this sort of thing regularly through out the Fall and Winter. It is my comfort food. Do you cook? What do you make regularly?
