Shakespeare on the Common this summer

The Commonwealth Shakespeare Company will perform Coriolanus for their 17th season of free Shakespeare plays on the Boston Common. Shows will run from July 25 – August 12, 2012 with performances Tuesday – Saturday at 8pm and Sunday at 7pm.  Shows will run 2 hours and 45 minutes so plan to smuggle in an extra bottle of wine.

Not familiar with Coriolanus? Neither am I.  According to The Commonwealth Shakespeare Co. website, “the play charts the rise and fall of a powerful general as he battles enemies abroad, and a tide of popularity at home in Rome. While the war hero triumphs in the field, it’s his struggle with politics, responsibility and government that threatens to undo him.”  Seems appropriate considering this is an election year in the US.

Tim Wakefield retires

Tim Wakefield announced his retirement from Major League Baseball today.  Aside from being the longest serving player on the Red Sox with 17 seasons under his belt  (he started playing for the team in 1995), he is a man who has shown a lot of class in a sport better known for players who do the exact opposite.

Wakefield may go down as one of my all-time favorite Red Sox players.  His knuckle ball could confound teams (esp. the New York Yankees) and was so much fun to watch.  I will definitely miss this man who had more than 200 career wins with the Red Sox.

Olive’s could reopen in days

Adam over at Universal Hub reported yesterday that Todd English’s restaurant, Olive’s, should be opening any day. The signature restaurant in Charlestown closed back in the spring of 2010.

Let’s hope that Mr. English is correct and the updated restaurant will reclaim its former glory when it opens.  I enjoyed the rustic vibe and have more than a few fond memories of this 50-seat restaurant which first opened in April 1989 in a neighborhood very much in transition.

Fenway Men’s Event: March 3, 2012

The Fenway Health Clinic’s annual Men’s Event is just a few weeks away.  This fundraiser which draws more than 1,300 gay men and their allies helps fund one of the nation’s leading and largest GLBT healthcare clinics.  This year’s award recipient is Massachusetts Representative Barney Frank.  Rep Frank will certainly add color to the evening speaking freely about issues pertaining to GLBT health, healthcare in general and issues of equality and social justice.

Don’t have tickets yet? You can buy them here.

I’ll be talking more about the black tie affair in the weeks that follow but for now I’ll leave you with picture of Sergio & Jesse from the 2011 Men’s Event.

Fogo de Chao to open in Boston

Que Ligao! Fogo de Chao is an authentic Brazilian steakhouse, which first opened in Porto Alegre, Brazil. The successful steakhouse has grown and now has nearly 20 locations in the US alone.

According to Adam over at Adam’s Hospitality and Tourism blog, the restaurant will soon be adding Boston as their newest location. Fogo de Chao will go into the space previously occupied by The Palm in Copley Square, which recently closed.

Look for an August / September opening.

Wicked Awesome: Jet Blue’s Red Sox airplane

JetBlue Airlines – the official airline of the Boston Red Sox – unveiled the latest addition to its fleet today, an Airbus A320 custom Red Sox-themed plane. Its first flight today was to Ft. Meyers where Red Sox spring training is underway.

Hotties on the T!

Those who live in and are familiar with Boston know that the mass transit system formally known as the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority is better known as and commonly referred to as the “T”.

A gay blogger has started snapping photos of guys riding the T called “Hotties on the T“. According to the blog, “Its pictures of men. Taken by men. On the T.”  Are you a voyeur? You can check out this new blog  here, Hotties on the T!

Here is a recent post entitled, “Pea Coat Perfection”

$1 Billion spent by Boston area museums

The winter months are my favorite time of year to visit local museums.  They provide a respite from the cold and snow as well as a great way to interact with friends.  According to the Boston Magazine daily blog, several of Boston’s leading cultural institutions have raised and spent significant amounts of money to upgrade their collections and infrastructure in the past 10 yrs.

Institute of Contemporary Art (Photo via ThinkStock)

Some of these projects have made national headlines such as the opening of the new Institute of Contemporary Arts (ICA) museum on Boston’s south waterfront in 2006.  This was the first new art museum to be built in the city in nearly 100 years and the iconic building has drawn 1,000,000 visitors.

At the same time, the Boston Museum of Fine Arts (MFA) embarked on an audacious expansion, raising more than $500 million to build the New America’s wing; a four story building that has 51,000 square feet and houses 53 new galleries.  The new wing opened November 2010.

Isabella Gardner Museum (Photo via WBUR)

Last week, the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum completed a $114 million expansion, opening a very modern looking new glass building that adds 70,000 square feet of exhibit space.  The new space is a stark contrast to the original building which is a replica of a Venetian palace.

Across the river in Cambridge, Harvard University is re-building the school’s three art museums to bring together the Fogg Museum, the Busch-Reisinger Museum, and the Arthur M. Sackler Museum into one state-of-the-art facility. Construction is expected to be completed in 2013.

If you are visiting the Boston area or if you happen to live here and have not visited one of these venerable institutions, won’t you consider checking them out? These institutions have built some world class facilities that are housing incredible works of art.  Good art evokes emotion and generates dialog – you may be surprised by how much you enjoy yourself.

Play ball (almost)

One month from today pitchers and catchers for the Boston Red Sox must report for spring training, and I couldn’t be happier or more excited to have the 2012 baseball season start.

This will be an historic year for the Boston Red Sox or to be more specific their home / our home, Fenway Park.  On April 20, 1912 Fenway Park opened for business and its been the home for the Red Sox and the heart of Red Sox nation ever since.

Plus I needed a plausible excuse to post this picture which makes my jaw drop.

How to survive a Boston winter

Starting this past fall I wrote a few posts called “How to survive a Boston winter”. I thought I’d provide some guidance for all those who may not have had to ‘weather’ a New England winter before. While many of my past posts can be adopted by anyone living in  a colder climate (you can read them here, here and here), this months feature truly is advice for those in Boston.

When the mercury drops and temperatures are freezing, visiting a museum is a great way to pass a day, but Boston is very lucky to have the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum.  The original building was modeled after a Venetian palace and home to the eccentric woman who the museum is named for. Starting Thursday, January 19th The Gardner reopens after a brief closure to put the finishing touches on its largest expansion in the museum’s 109 year history. If you visit be sure to go to the original building.  In the middle of her house is a tiny, but beautiful garden where you can literally smell roses in bloom, see a beautiful patch of grass and temporarily forget that the weather outside is downright frightful. If you can’t get away and find the winter too much to take then treat yourself by visiting the Gardner; it’ll do a world of good.

No Pants Subway Ride – thank you

On Sunday, January 8th Boston participated in the 5th Annual “No Pants Subway Ride”.  This year we decided to dress as superheroes, and I have to admit we were pretty successful at turning more than a few heads (not to mention making several young kids squeal with delight at seeing their favorite superheroes).

I’d like to say thank you to the following media outlets and bloggers for sharing the video I created on YouTube.  The following day, Monday, January 9th was the busiest day ever for my blog and these individuals were responsible for making that possible.

2012 Boston No Pants Subway Ride

On Sunday, January 8th hundreds of men and women descended upon Dewey Square to partake in the Boston chapter’s Society of Spontaneity’s annual “No Pants Subway Ride”.

This was the 5th annual event in Boston which is also hosted in cities around the world.  The video below is more cheeky than naughty (as we saw from the advertising) it is far less revealing than the billboards and signs you will see if you ride the subway in Boston.

Spontaneous cheers were regularly heard through out the subway from young kids. Parents were horrified to see their children run from them to hug and ask their favorite superheroes why they were in Boston.  And security in the Copley Mall had all they could do to stop people from photographing the two superheroes who were walking to the post party at King’s in Back Bay.

You can learn more about the Boston Society of Spontaneity here.

Boston No Pants Subway Ride this Sunday

Sunday, January 8th is the annual No Pants Subway Ride.  The event, which started in NYC, now takes place in many cities (including Boston).  You can read more about the 2012 No Pants Subway Ride here.

The weather in Boston will not be as cold as last year and thank goodness there is no snow but it is still projected to be downright chilly so if you plan on participating, dress warmly from the waist up. Below you can check out the video I created from Boston’s 2011 No Pants Subway Ride.
