Boston Gay Men’s Bookclub meets January 22nd

Boston Book FestivalBoston Gay Men’s Book Club will be meeting in a couple of weeks on Monday, January 22nd at the Trident Bookseller & Cafe in the Back Bay to discuss this month’s novel, Paul Takes The Form of a Mortal Girl, by Andrea Lawlor.

The debut novel from Lawlor puts a fantasy spin on gender and sex as the reader follows Paul, a bartender with shapeshifting abilities who uses his malleable appearance to explore humanity and intimacy through sex. Winding his way through the heyday of ’90s queer culture, Paul begins to question his motives, his future, and the true nature of his identity in this clever, provocative tale.

The book can be purchased online at major resellers but you may also buy this at local bookstores. If you’re open to supporting local bookstores try one of these links, which will take you right to the book so you can make a quick purchase.

Trump Tweets to overcompensate for his small penis

Yesterday was a new low for an administration that keeps finding new lows. Never again will I listen to anyone who criticizes Obama’s foreign policy. Donald Trump sounds as if he is trying to overcompensate for something and is basically goading a madman into war. I’ve met teenagers with a firmer grasp (and better understanding of history) than our current embarrassment of a President.

Boston Gay Men’s Chorus: Auditions are Jan. 7th

Boston gay men's chorusThe Boston Gay Men’s Chorus (BGMC) was founded in 1982 and includes 200 men who use their music as a way to bring people together. BGMC sings a wide spectrum of classical and popular music and is heard live by more than 10,000 people each season. BGMC also plays the role of Cultural Ambassadors – being the first LGBT chorus to perform in Poland in 2005, the Middle East in 2015 and later this year in South Africa in June 2018.

The chorus also happen to be hosting auditions later this week. If you are interested in learning more about the chorus or their auditions like their Facebook Page and click here for more details: BGMC Auditions.

Many use the New Year as an opportunity to make resolutions. A common resolution is to be more active and meet people, but that can be difficult for gay men in Boston. Starting in 2018 I want to feature the many groups and organizations that help people connect and enrich Boston’s gay life. If you would like to have your club / team featured please reach out to me.

Which restaurant will open first in the South End in 2018

south end diningIt is hard to say which restaurant will be the first to open in Boston’s South End in 2018 but it is interesting that two contenders are restaurants that focus on cuisine south of the Mason-Dixon line, Southern Proper and Bootleg Special.

While Boston has an Italian or French restaurant on what seems like every corner, the city has relatively few restaurants that seek inspiration from the South and even fewer that do it well.South End diningChef Jason Cheek will be opening his restaurant, Southern Proper, at 600 Harrison Avenue in  The Girard relatively soon, considering the space has signs saying “Opening Winter 2018”. The new space will include more than 1,500 square feet of dining, bar space and patio seating.

If Cheek’s name rings a bell it might be because he has a distinguished career working at several excellent restaurants including The Maiden, Sam’s at Louis,  Coppa and Toro to name just a few.

south end restaurant, Stephen ChanA restaurant that looking to open even before Southern Proper is the traditional style Louisiana seafood boil, called Bootleg Special, owned by the former Castle Square resident, Stephen Chan. The restaurant’s menu will include items like crawfish poutine, po’boys and beignets.

Southern Proper hopes to get a live music license, which I hope they can get – this city needs more places that offer live music – not fewer and their location on the corner of Tremont and Herald Street means there are very few residents who could / should be impacted.

It is interesting to note that both of these restaurants constitute new space for the South End, adding to the dizzying number of new restaurants that have opened in this tiny downtown neighborhood.

In the case of Southern Proper, it is going into a new mixed-use residential space that previously was a parking lot in SoWa and in the case of Bootleg Special, to my knowledge the space was never a restaurant; previously it had been a dog daycare center.

The Power of One

The Power of OneMy friend Sheraz (shown above) recently started recording meditation podcasts. The recordings are as much a personal cathartic expression as they are intended to be for others. A recent podcast entitled The Power of One, which he recorded just prior to the Christmas holiday is a brief meditation on goal setting. The topic seems appropriate for New Years – a time when many make resolutions. The entire podcast lasts about 12 minutes and concludes with a 3 minute meditation.

Click Here To Listen: THE POWER OF ONE

I am a firm believer in setting goals so I wanted to give the podcast a shout out and suggest you listen to it when you have a minute (or twelve to be precise).

Previous meditation podcasts include:

Power of Connection Meditation
Introduction: Compassion & Love Meditation

BosGuy reviews G2O Spa & Salon

Boston spa, massageG2O Spa and Salon on Newbury Street in Boston’s Back Bay neighborhood has been operating (initially under the name Giuliano Spa) since 1994, and it has been at its current location (278 Newbury Street) since 2010.

The full service spa offers all the traditional services you would associate with a spa and salon as well as several unique treatments you won’t find at other spas in Boston but for this post I want to focus on my 1-hour full body massage.

I will start with my only criticism of the entire spa experience – the somewhat chaotic surroundings on their ground floor where you first enter and pay before leaving. Fortunately once you leave the ground floor all the noise and chaos goes away. The facilities are excellent and I especially appreciate their spacious  men’s locker, which have private showers (which I used after my massage).

My masseur Bill Engvall met me as I came out of the men’s locker room and brought me down to the third floor.  After a quick consultation, he left the room so I could slip off my G20 robe and sandals and get onto the heated bed. I had mentioned to Bill I spend a lot of time hunched over my laptop at a desk job so he focused on my neck and lower back.

Boston spaI feel like every masseur has their own technique but I evaluate a massage based on how attentive they are to areas that need attention and ultimately how refreshed / relaxed I feel after the massage concludes. Bill did a great job and while I was showering off the massage oils, I noticed a marked improvement with my arms and shoulders flexibility. Even better I slept deeply and woke up uncharacteristically refreshed and less grumpy than usual.

A 60-minute massage at G2O starts at $125 and a 90-minute massage starts at $175 and while this may not be something you can do regularly, it is a wonderful treat especially in the winter when the air is so dry and it is so cold out.

BosGuy Rating: 5 out of 5 stars, Awesome.

NOTE: In January G2O will leave 278 Newbury Street and expand into space above the Tannery on Exeter Street. One assumes the new space will be even nicer. I look forward to visiting it in the new year and sharing an updated review.
