Namaste: Whole Foods

nnamasteI owe my friend, Benni, thanks for pointing out this absolutely hilarious article on Huffington Post by stand up comedian Kelly MacLean. Unfortunately, this may not resonate if you’ve never shopped at Whole Foods which is a US grocer. For those who are regular shoppers, I’m sure this will have you practically in tears.

Here is an excerpt: Next I see the gluten-free section filled with crackers and bread made from various wheat-substitutes such as cardboard and sawdust. I skip this aisle because I’m not rich enough to have dietary restrictions. Ever notice that you don’t meet poor people with special diet needs? A gluten intolerant house cleaner? A cab driver with Candida? Candida is what I call a rich, white person problem. You know you’ve really made it in this world when you get Candida. My personal theory is that Candida is something you get from too much hot yoga.

Did you chuckle? If so, you may want to read this article.

Surviving a Boston winter

Travel Last year I wrote a series of posts giving some tips to new residents on how to survive a Boston winter.  You may not want to think about it, but winter in Boston will be here before you realize it and when it comes to surviving a New England winter, planning ahead is key.

Booking airfare in September and October for January and February can help you get a better fare and also allows you to pay off the cost of the airline ticket well in advance of your vacation. The photo above is of your’s truly relaxing at the W Vieques this past February.  Contemplating a trip to Vieques, P.R.? Feel free to check out some of my posts about my trip last year.

Bioluminescent Tour in Vieques, P.R.

I find the best way to make it through Boston’s brutal winter is to plan a quick respite for a few nights some place warm. Cheap seats abound for flights in January, February and March if you have some flexibility (hint: airfares on Tuesdays and Wednesdays are cheaper than end of week and weekends).

Book your flights now while more affordable seats remain and before the holiday season has you spending more money than you intend.

US Sen Cruz recites Green Eggs and Ham

green-eggs-and-hamLast night right wing whack job, US Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) , was pretending to filibuster in protest of President Obama’s healthcare legislation “Obamacare”. He went on to quote passages from the Bible and to compare President Obama’s legislation similar to the policies of the German Nazis in WWII.

His chicanery has created a huge divide between ‘establishment’ Republicans who continue to shun this man and Tea Party supporters like Sarah Palin who are cheering him on, which makes me wonder – what is the end game?  When can the US Congress, and in particular the Republican Party grow up and start to work with their counterparts to negotiate in good faith and get back to work. I’m tired of these photo ops, because that is all this is.

Opus Affair at Forum Boston tonight

Opus AffairWhile Boston’s unfriendly reputation is sometimes deserved there are a number of groups that have made a concerted effort to help people connect – like Opus Affair. This group defines themselves as a “community of artists and friends” who meet monthly for cocktails around Boston and each month Opus Affair attracts a large, friendly group worth checking out.

Some come for networking, others come for fun, but each monthly gathering is informal and very social.  No plans tonight? Check out Opus Affair’s monthly get together.  This month they will be at Forum in the Back Bay on Boylston Street.

Restaurant review: Ginger Exchange

BosGuyGinger Exchange opened their second location by Symphony Hall at 250 Huntington Ave earlier this past summer. Self-described as a “fresh Asian kitchen”, I thought it was a comfortable and affordable option for dinner.  As with so many Asian menu’s it goes on forever so in lieu of my usual description, visit their website for details, gingerexchange.com.

We started with the Crab Rangoon ($5.95) followed by the Original Pad Thai with chicken and shrimp ($10.95).  I was sharing dinner with Sergio so I refrained from ordering any of the chef’s specialty rolls, but there were many sushi options on the menu that caught my eye – perhaps next time.

The Crab Rangoon come six to an order and were served warm. The crispy wonton and cream cheese were slightly addicting and a good start to our dinner.  The Pad Thai that followed also proved to be very satisfying.  If I wasn’t sharing this plate I would have preferred some hot sauce / oil to bring more zip to the plate, but otherwise I thought it was very tasty.

Ginger Exchange Symphony foodGinger Exchange has a full bar. They are located across the street from Symphony Hall and just a few doors down from the Huntington Theater Company and NEC’s Jordan Hall, making it a good option either before or after catching a show / performance.
