Flashback Friday

Flashback FridayWith the Boston Bruins playing against Chicago Blackhawks for the Stanley Cup Finals in game 2 tomorrow, I thought I’d feature the original Boston Garden – home to the Boston Bruins.  This building first opened in 1928 and was demolished in 1998 and replaced by a “New” Boston Garden.

In front of the Garden you see an elevated portion of the Green Line subway that vaguely resembles Chicago’s metro the “El”.  Let’s hope that the Bruins will eek out a win tomorrow night before they return to the Boston Garden for game 3.

Furry Friday

Furry FridayI posted a different photo of Arnaud Dehaynin for Furry Friday in September here, but can you blame me for wanting to feature this guy again?

BosGuy brain teaser

brain teaserEach Friday morning I post a riddle to try to get you to think outside the box and exercise your brain.

If you are stumped, share it with a friend or colleague and try to figure it out together.  I’ll confirm answers in the afternoon so don’t worry if you don’t see your comment posted right away. I want to give everyone a chance to guess.

This week’s brain teaser:

This is an unusual paragraph. I’m curious as to just how quickly you can find out what is so unusual about it. It looks so ordinary and plain that you would think nothing was wrong with it. In fact, nothing is wrong with it! It is highly unusual though. Study it and think about it, but you still may not find anything odd. But if you work at it a bit, you might find out.

Like riddles? Check out past week’s brain teasers.

Single Ladies Gone Wrong

single ladiesBack in January I posted this video but I couldn’t help myself and figured I’d re-post it. The fact that I find this so funny gives everyone insight into how demented my sense of humor really is.  For the record, clowns freak me out so if the opening image turns you off – trust me when I say, stick with it and watch.

Map of Boston and Cambridge residents by race

via Bostonography blogAndy Woodruff over at the Bostonography blog wrote a post in December 2012 entitled Blue and Bluer: Massachusetts and Boston.  The post provided some really interesting insights into the voting habits of Boston and Massachusetts; home to some of the most progressive voters in the United States.

Part of that analysis included a breakdown of racial groups in Boston. It is not clear to me if the breakdown is based upon registered voters or US Census data, but either way it is an interesting image (see above). I would love to see how this has changed from the previous century in decade blocks. My guess is that the map of Boston has become far more colorful in the past 30+ years, and to paraphrase Martha Stewart, I think that is “very good thing”.

Tweets from Hillary: Sarah Palin

Hillary ClintonI’m sure many of you remember the funny “Texts from Hillary” site that went viral last spring; this one was a personal favorite.  However, Hillary Clinton recently made news joining Twitter so I had to laugh when Joe My God post this picture.

The subtlety may be lost on those not on Twitter, where Hillary Clinton uses her profile to define herself as Wife and Mom first before she goes on to list her many other accomplishments including some humorous descriptions like “pantsuit aficionado”.

Bobby’s from Boston

Can a hip, downtown Boston neighborhood be home to an iconic store Hollywood stylists and movie makers have on a short list but residents across town have never heard of before? The answer is yes.

Last week I was watching WGBH, Boston’s PBS station, when Bobby’s From Boston was featured. Bobby’s is just two blocks up the street from where I live, and apparently remains a relative unknown  to local fashionistas who love “vintage”.

Bobby’s keeps no website and jokes that their store hours are “Closed until tomorrow 12:00 – 6:00pm”. This iconic shop located at 19 Thayer Street is one of the coolest stores I’ve ever visited.  Located along the pedestrian walkway that brings thousands into the South End each Sunday for the SoWa Open Market, Bobby’s is just one of several very unique and truly one-of-a-kind shops worth checking out. PBS recent interview of Bobby is what spurred me to write this post.  Below I’ve included an excerpt from his interview for WGBH-TV.

Happy Pride

Happy PrideMy hometown, Boston, has already had their Pride celebration, but many cities here in the US and around the world that have celebrations this month have yet to have their fun. I wanted to give a shout out to a few cities that will be celebrating Pride this weekend, including: Berlin, Denver, Edinburgh, Portland (OR) and Rhode Island Pride in Providence.

Straight people are so weird

straight people are so weirdStraight people are so weird.  These two guys decided to experience the pain of giving birth to show their wives that it wasn’t all that bad; the joke turned out to be on them as you can see from the wives high-fiving each other in the photograph.  Fortunately, it makes for an entertaining video to watch.

Sir Richard’s: KORE condoms

safe sexMy friend and fellow blogger for the blog You Think You Know is heading back down to Haiti to volunteer.  This isn’t his first visit. He has chronicled past trips, describing everything from the people he has met to the poverty he’s witnessed as a doctor volunteering to help the people of Haiti in his blog here.

Unlike my friend, I’d be useless in an Haitian Emergency Room, but thanks to Sir Richard’s KORE program I can now help contribute to the sexual health of Haitians by making contraception more readily available.  For every Sir Richard’s condom bought, the company is donating a condom to Haiti.

Let’s be honest, the world needs more skilled volunteers like my friend. However, this is something we can all do so when you reach out to buy your next box of condoms, perhaps you’ll give Sir Richard’s a second thought.  To date, Sir Richard’s has donated more than 1.6 million condoms to Haiti. Want to help?  Look for their condoms at Whole Foods stores or CVS pharmacies.

Summer diets

Summer dietingThe winter is thankfully a thing of the past and I’ve started obsessing about the beach. The idea of walking around without a shirt is all the incentive I need to do a little extra to try and get into shape.  I’ve already started what I refer to as my June diet which consists of cutting out all meat.  In years past this has helped me drop from what I call my ‘winter weight’ that fluctuates anywhere from 190 – 195 lbs to 185 – 190 lbs.  As I get older it is harder to build muscle but thanks to a great trainer, I’m hoping I’ll be less self conscious walking around this summer.

Do you do anything to try and squeeze off a few extra pounds or bulk up?  I can’t be the only one who goes a bit crazy.

RI Pride Weekend

Love ForwardRhode Island Pride, New England’s second largest Pride Festival, is in full swing this week but the fun will really get underway later this weekend on Saturday June 15th.  Looking for something fun to do this weekend?
