Andy Roddick and Mardy Fish take stand against homophobia

Athlete AllyIn light of the disgraceful way the International Olympic Committee has dealt with championing Russia’s homophobic legislation, I wanted to share this story.

American star tennis players Andy Roddick and Mardy Fish become the 1st professional men’s tennis players to align with Athlete Ally.

Andy Roddick said, “Yesterday was an incredible day for athletes everywhere. Jason Collin’s courage and leadership in coming out reminds me of how important it is for an athlete to be able to be true to him or herself.  As an Athlete Ally, I want to support every athlete to feel comfortable and confident being themselves and to make sure that all people – players and fans alike – are  welcome and included in tennis.”  More about this story here and more about Athlete Ally here.

Restaurant review: Blue Dragon

Ming Tsai

Last Thursday Blue Dragon celebrated their one year anniversary.  This is Ming Tsai’s second restaurant and his first in Boston. When it first opened there was so much buzz it was impossible to grab a seat at this gastro pub that served Asian inspired plates.  One year later the place remains a popular destination, and I’m happy to say that Ming’s touch remains – the food and service is excellent.

PotstickersBlue Dragon encourages you to share plates so there are only a few true dinner plates.   We sampled a bit of everything but one thing you *must* try is the potstickers on the menu; we tried two:  Carolina BBQ (top left) for $9 and Braised Short Rib and Chinese Celery Potstickers (top right) for $9.  Both were soft and flavorful, but I liked the kick in the BBQ Potstickers most.

Ming TsaiWe followed the poststickers with Ming’s take on Fish-n-Chips $12 that are made with panko cod, fries and served on a soft tortilla with cabbage, peppers and Chinese black vinegar aioli.  These were delicious and something I would recommend to anyone who likes this sort of thing. The peppers had some heat that I found really appealing.  We countered the “fish and chips tacos” with Teriyaki bison sliders $13 that come topped with smoked Gouda, caramelized onions and shiitakes.  Both plates went great with my winter lager.

Ming TsaiFor dessert we ordered the deep dish chocolate chip cookie $10.  The cookie is served warm in a skillet and topped with ice cream and caramel sauce and was delicious.  One year later, Blue Dragon proves it still is worth visiting.

Ming Tsai’s Blue Dragon is in Fort Point Channel at 324A street in Boston; open Monday – Saturday; closed on Sunday.

BosGuy visits K.C.

Kansas City MODespite the fact that I’ve traveled through much of the US, I’ve not spent much time in the middle of the country so I didn’t know what to expect when work brought me to Kansas City, MO last week. One gets the impression that 100+ years ago K.C. was probably a very important and slightly lawless place that served as a crossroad for travelers.

Jack Stack BarbecueI don’t see myself returning to Kansas City unless work brings me there but should you visit I would suggest trying one of their famous barbecue restaurants.  K.C. loves their BBQ, and I had a fun meal at Fiorella’s Jack Stack Barbecue, but there are so many just pick one close to your hotel.

Manifesto Kansas CityOn our third night my colleagues and I were hungry for a non-BBQ dinner and we found a good option nearby in the entertainment district at the restaurant, The Drop.  Our waitress also gave us a great tip to check out Manifesto at The Rieger Hotel for a nightcap.  The subterranean bar plays off its location’s history as a speakeasy that Al Capone use to visit.  My favorite drink was a gin based cocktail called The Girl from Cadiz made with gin, sherry, lemon, mint, dried juniper berries and lemon grass for garnish.  I’m going to dream about this cocktail for a long time.

Peets Coffee to open in South End

Francescas Cafe South EndWhen Francesca’s closed this past August, it was rumored the owner wanted an upscale cafe or bistro to replace Francesca’s but space limitations may have made that business model impractical.

Earlier this month I heard rumors that a national coffee chain would open at 564 Tremont Street.  This week BostonInno confirmed Peet’s Coffee will open in the space formerly home to Francesca’s.  While I’d prefer an independent cafe, I’m relieved to read Peet’s will be opening. At the moment, I don’t have any details on when they may be opening to the public.

What kind of Asian are you

OMG…I love this video. Perhaps the humor plays better on the West coast or for Aussies and Kiwis. Thank you little bro for the tip.

This is HI-larious.

Sky Mall party cups

Sky MallLast week I had to travel to Kansas City, MO for work and as many of you know, I’m inclined to pick up and peruse the Sky Mall catalog while sitting on the tarmac waiting to take off.  It seems every issue of Sky Mall contains at least one item that makes me laugh out loud and the early spring catalog was no exception.

Rita Rims – Really?

The tag line reads “These cups come ready to party”.  I’m just not certain what kind of party they have in mind.  Sounds to me like Rita is a puttana. Whenever I see stuff like this, I always think there is a gay marketing executive somewhere laughing over a drink (perhaps in this case over a Rita Rims Party Cup) telling his buddies what he suggested as a product name.

Government Center Garage Redevelopment

Boston Anyone who has spent any amount of time in Boston will be familiar with the Government Center parking garage shown above, but for those who have moved away or don’t come into Boston often you may not know that Boston-based developer HYM Investment Group LLC intends to raze major portions of the existing 11-story garage to clear the way for six new buildings – transforming the 4.8 acres in the heart of the city.

BostonThe project will radically transform the area, which the developer describes as “an underutilized 1960s-era parking structure” into a transit-oriented, mixed-use development with a new public plaza and pedestrian connector. The proposal includes 771 residential units, 204 new hotel rooms, 1.3 million square feet of office space, 82,500 square feet of retail space and 1,159 parking spaces.

Despite the fact that parking is always an issue and the development will significantly decrease the number of existing parking spaces, I think it is a great idea.  You can track the progress of this project on the BRA website here and you can read more about the development on the project’s website here.

Red Sox spring training

sportsTomorrow Red Sox position players report for spring training with the first full-squad workout scheduled for this Thursday. It may not seem like spring (at least not here in Boston) but I love when spring training starts because I know spring is not far away. This year Red Sox Nation will also have the added benefit of the handsome (selfie loving) Grady Sizemore.  Will he be able to bring the goods or just be easy on the eyes?

Tom Menino

Boston PrideOne month from today Boston’s traditional (although no longer truly) Irish neighborhood, Southie, will host their annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade. Boston’s former mayor, Tom Menino, made news back in 1994 when he did the unthinkable in Irish-Boston and took the organizers of Boston’s St. Patrick’s Day parade to court for banning “The Gays”.  The parade that year was cancelled by the organizers rather than comply with the State’s highest court which ruled against them.  Later they were allowed to maintain their “no gays” ban thanks to the US Supreme Court but Menino never joined the parade in the 20 years he served this city as mayor to show his support for Boston’s LGBT community.

This gay voter has a long memory and I wanted to say thank you to Mr. Menino. I remember 1994. Will & Grace hadn’t even premiered yet (it started in 1998).  To put this in perspective, two years later in 1996 Bill Clinton would sell-out the LGBT community by signing the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) into law.
