Neil Patrick Harris to host 2012 Tony Awards
Neil Patrick Harris has been asked back for a third time to host the 2012 Tony Awards which will take place on Sunday, June 10, at 8 p.m. on CBS.
I’m not a fan of award shows. For all the hoopla surrounding the Oscars it never ceases to amaze me how horrible A-list actors are when they are required to perform one-take in front of a live audience. Compare that with the Tony Awards where all the Broadway stars perform in front of a live audience every night and the contrast is astounding.
Neil Patrick Harris has shown he can dance, sing and drop a funny line with the best in Hollywood and Broadway so I’ll definitely be setting my DVR to record this show and so should you.
Free ice cream today only
Shh… don’t tell my trainer, but today is Ben & Jerry’s Around the World Free Cone Day! Meant to be a way for the ice cream company to show their appreciation to all their customers and to celebrate their 34 years in business, local Ben & Jerry’s shops will be giving away a free scoop of your favorite flavor from 12PM – 8PM today only!
The lines are bound to be long so be prepared to wait and be sure to slip a dollar or two into the tip jar for all those hard working employees.
Happy birthday Mom
My mother is celebrating her birthday today. She is easily one of the most amazing individuals I’ve ever met and someone I’ve come to admire and appreciate more with each passing year.
I can’t adequately express how fortunate I feel to have been born into my family. What a wonderful accomplishment she and my father have achieved, beating all the odds by raising four children all relatively well adjusted, happy and successful in their own endeavors. Mom you are more amazing and special than you will ever realize. Happy Birthday.
Tweet of the day: Gym
I just started following Zach from Philly. His Twitter profile describes him as skeptical, sleepy and sarcastic. Here in Boston we’d also add wicked funny, although that may mess with his awesome alliteration.
If you are on Twitter and are looking for someone who can make you laugh with their 140-character wit, check out & follow @itsonlyzach.
April is national poetry month
I love poetry because it can evoke strong feelings. That may sound strange, because I hear people say they don’t “get” poetry. But when I ask these people when was the last time they read poetry they refer back to when they were in class. Can you imagine what one might think of music if your sole experience was from music class? I’m pretty certain shows like American Idol and The Voice wouldn’t be on television.
Poetry is a lot like music. The trick is finding poets who speak to you.
Poetry inserts art into the form of communicating and can beautifully describe abstracts like love and faith. Poetry can also perfectly capture and describe a moment or feeling with amazing elegance.
I thought I’d share an excerpt from a poem in honor of national poetry month. This poem is appropriately named Boston and is a bit naughty.
I watched two men
press hard into
each other, their bodies
caught in the club’s
bass drum swell,
and I couldn’t remember
when I knew I’d never
be beautiful, but it must
have been quick
and subtle, the way
the holy ghost can pass
in and out of a room.
I want so desperately
to be finished with desire,
the rushing wind, the still
small voice.
If you are intrigued you can read the full poem online or purchase Aaron Smith’s book Blue on Blue Ground. He even has a rather interesting poem about Brad Pitt.
Mitt Romney supported NOM
Last week I wrote about confidential documents from the National Organization for Marriage (NOM) made public in my post here. These documents detailed a blueprint written by NOM to drive a wedge between gays and blacks with a “divide and conquer” strategy.
NOM has been considered a fringe group from the beginning. Their rhetoric and techniques have made them notorious and for that reason only the most virulent opponents to same sex marriage have associated themselves with this organization.
Mitt Romney’s support of NOM is shameful
It was both surprising and disappointing to learn last Friday in 2008 Mitt Romney donated $10,000 to NOM. With scores of organizations opposing same sex marriage, Romney could and did financially support many organizations opposing marriage equality. So why did he feel the need to also provide such a generous donation to NOM? Political posturing? His belief in NOM? Regardless Mitt Romney’s support of NOM is shameful.
Men of Twitter
Each Monday I blog about Twitter profiles which catch my eye and whom I think you may enjoy following. As always, suggestions are welcome. If you’d like to follow me on twitter, you can find me @BosGuy. You can find me talking about past Men of Twitter by searching #MenOfTwitter.
For the past month I’ve been featuring couples who are both on Twitter, but this week ends that trend. The two men featured this week are both in a relationship but not with each other.
GingrSteve – For all those ginger fans out there, this has been a long time coming, but I think you’ll agree Steve is both handsome and worth the follow. This Canadian calls Calgary his home. He lives there with his partner and a puppy named Tucker. Steve is focused on getting his personal trainer certification and working on his personal fitness; something I can appreciate and admire. Steve is quite conversational on Twitter so if you follow – don’t be shy and say hello to him.
Justex07 – A.K.A. Justin Scott is originally from Texas but now calls San Francisco home and lives with his boyfriend. Justin’s job has him travelling so much that he created a blog called itsjustjustin.com. When this young entrepreneur is not between airport lounges, he is working on his photography which is also featured on the blog mentioned. You’ll enjoy following this Twitter addict and get to live vicariously through him as he tweets about work, wine and life.
Book review: The Dante Club
The Dante Club is a must read for historical fiction and mystery fans. Set in Boston in 1865 its main characters include American literature giants Longfellow, Holmes, and Lowell. Pearl does an amazing job drawing in the reader, telling a tale about suspicious murders in Boston that have amazing parallels to those depicted in Dante’s Inferno, a book coincidentally being translated into English by these writers for the American public.
Pearl’s novel will ignite your imagination and have you up late reading. He does a brilliant job of bringing post-civil war Boston to life in this murder mystery that includes some of America’s most celebrated writers of the day. However, even if you are unfamiliar with these writers / poets you will lose none of the suspense. Don’t assume Pearl’s writing style and story is too cerebral, this national bestseller will be a page turner for anyone who enjoys a good story and likes mysteries.
You can read more about the book and the local author, Matthew Pearl, who lives in Cambridge, MA on his website, www.matthewpearl.com.
April Fools’ Day
Today is April Fools’ Day. A day many use as an excuse to play all kinds of jokes and foolishness. While the day is meant for pranksters and all in good fun, not all jokes are funny and sometimes a Fool really can try one’s patience.
Who is the bigger fool these candidates
or the men and women looking to them to lead our nation?
So I thought I’d share three fools who I’ve lost my patience with and who I no longer laugh or jest about. These three men in particular have successfully moved the political dialog in the United States so far to the right that I no longer can bear the thought of any of them.
These three men have dashed so far to the right that their meaningless debates have been about topics like should birth control be made available, initiating a war with Iran and building colonies on the moon – no joke. If I had told friends likely to vote Republican in the next election these would be the topics dominating Republican debates I’m fairly certain I could have wagered them all $100 (or maybe I should’ve bet $10,000 as Romney did to Gov. Perry in one debate).
Beth and Shelley at Union
Friday night we had an early dinner at Union Bar & Grille. As we were finishing, an older couple arrived. Beth was perfectly coiffed and immaculately dressed. Shelley who was only slightly larger than Beth was quite distinguished and the perfect gentleman. It was endearing to watch Shelley pull out the chair next to me so Beth could sit down.
Although we were finishing, we ended up chatting first about Beth’s cocktail then the menu and finally about food and restaurants. Beth dominated the conversation, but Shelley did his best to interject although he often deferred to her for details like where they ate dinner the night before and the market he likes to buy his cheese.
Romance is not just for 20-somethings
From where I was sitting, the two couldn’t be more adorable. They were the storybook image of a happily ever after couple who had built a life together. However, that wasn’t the case at all. They had been dating for more than a decade and enjoyed each other’s company but they did not live together.
Always be open to love and you just might find it
Although they never used the word it was obvious they are sweethearts. I’m not sure what twists in life may have brought them together, but they were / are quite clear about their independence and how Friday is their date night.
I was enthralled and hope to meet them again soon.
Restaurant review: Blunch
Normally I refrain from reviewing restaurants that don’t offer table service, but I like this neighborhood eatery so much I wanted to write about Blunch. As the name would imply, the tiny little restaurant on the corner of Harrison Avenue and East Springfield Street in the South End serves breakfast and lunch. Open Monday through Saturday, Blunch has a Vegan and Gluten Free friendly menu comprised of Eggwiches & Bagelwiches ($4 – $7); Sandwiches & Salads ranging ($7 – $8); and of course Sweets and fresh Fair Trade, Organic coffee.
The Provencal ($7.50) is shown below and ingredients include: fresh Vermont goat cheese, tomatoes, artichoke hearts, cashew pesto, greens, and black olive puree pressed on panini.
If you live or work in this corner of the South End, definitely check out this tiny eatery. The ingredients are all fresh and made behind the counter. If you go be sure to check out their large chocolate chip cookies with Fluff.

Independent Film Festival of Boston
Last week the Independent Film Festival of Boston announced their 2012 line up. This festival, now entering its 10th year, shows films one might not get a chance to see anywhere else. The festival includes a selection of American movies made outside the Hollywood studio system, as well as International films, with a mix of narrative features and documentaries, short films, including animation and experimental genres.
Are you a movie buff? You may want to check out this year’s line up. Check out the festivals website, www.iffboston.org.
Jacoby Ellsbury on cover of Improper Bostonian
Look who is on the cover of the Improper Bostonian this week. I prefer this photo to the cover. The Red Sox home opener is in 14 days.
Furry Friday
On a whim last Friday I posted a photograph of a handsome guy and entitled the post “Furry Friday”. I received more than a few emails and comments, but a fellow blogger went one step further and surprised me with a candidate for today.
Much thanks to the submission by Blobby’s Blog.
