I should really start watching soccer games

sports, blue, legs I really should start watching soccer games. They look way more interesting than American football.

Instagram account Chris Nogiec

InstagramEarlier this month I wrote about the Instagram account @intergaycial.  This time I wanted to feature the Instagram account of a guy who lives in Boston and whom I’ve met socially, although I wouldn’t go so far as to suggest we know each other, @chrisnogiec.

The few times we’ve met, I’ve been struck by how friendly Chris is. I’m also impressed by the fact that he’s quite a smart guy; he has his PhD, is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist and is a Certified Sports Nutritionist. All that aside, he has an active Instagram account filled with pg-13 photos I’m sure my primarily gay and female readership will enjoy.

If you like what you see and you are on Instagram, check out @chrisnogiec and while you are on Instagram check out my own account, @bosguyblog.

Is that a penis or a lightsaber

WIKO mobile - Pub FEVERJust as I started to read a lot of gay men writing “Who cares about Star Wars” on Facebook, a French company found a way to pique their interest (along with many others I’m sure), by showing two men wearing glow-in-the-dark condoms, having a lightsaber fight (sound effects included).

I’ll let your imagination take it from there, because while I have no issue with the video it does push the boundaries of what I’m comfortable posting. No doubt you’ll find it on other blogs or you can watch it on YouTube, here.

Merrill & Co. to make way for Akinto in South End

Boston Nightlife Ventures, BNVAfter a brief second attempt Merrill & Co. has closed (again), leaving the space probably best known as the home of 28 Degrees empty. But this space in the South End will not remain vacant for long, according to the blog, Boston Restaurant Talk, Boston Nightlife Ventures (BNV) will open a new restaurant there named Akinto.

BNV is better known for their bars than cuisine in my opinion so it will be interesting to see if they can create a successful restaurant in the South End. Akinto is currently the Southeast Asian-influenced pop-up operating within BNV’s restaurant and bar, Wink & Nod, located next door so you can check out the food to get a glimpse of what may come when it opens. According to the post, Akinto is hoping for an early summer 2016 opening.

Four books that are great gifts

I thought I’d use the holiday season as an excuse to plug several books that I have read and enjoyed. I thought they might appeal to you (nothing like giving yourself a holiday gift or two) or someone you care about.

The books cover a wide range of subject matter and are written by gay authors.

Madonna fans were treated to her Rebel Heart Tour this fall. The tour starts up again after the holidays in early January initially in Mexico City before coming back to the US.  For those who can’t get enough of the Pop Music Icon, boy culture blogger, Matthew Rettenmund’s, new book,  Encyclopedia Madonnica 20, might be something you’d like to purchase. Encyclopedia Madonnica 20 now available at Amazon.com.

Michelangelo SignorileFor those who prefer non-fiction, I would strongly recommend Michelangelo Signorile’s latest book, It’s Not Overwhich is published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt and is currently on sale everywhere.

Signorile’s  book is a wake up call of sorts. He warns the LGBT community not to take for granted the amazing progress we’ve made by assuming equality is inevitable. He makes a persuasive argument pointing to how the conservative movement is reorganizing and how groups the LGBT community often view as allies are sometimes without even realizing it becoming complacent and as he puts it “become a roadblock to progress.” Definitely worth the read if social justice and politics are your thing.

Kenneth WalshOne of my favorite bloggers, Kenneth Walsh released a memoir last year called, Wasn’t Tomorrow Wonderful?  Gay men who grew up before the dawn of the Internet will likely find themselves relating to his memoir. The novel reminisces about the life of a gay Midwestern teenager coming of age in the 1980s and 1990s before the advent of  the Internet, mobile phones and apps.

South End by Russ LopezMy friend and neighbor, Russ Lopez, released a new book some of you may be interested in reading, Boston’s South End: The Clash of Ideas in a Historic Neighborhood.

This is the first book written about the history of the South End neighborhood – where I call home – in more than 100 years and it covers the neighborhood from the time of the retreat of the glaciers and the coming of the first people to the region to the explosion of development since 2000. I recently finished the book and loved every page.  I learned a lot about the history of the neighborhood and would recommend it to anyone who has an interest in this part of Boston. You can order Russ’ book online at South End Bookstore.

Gay men and their underwear

Chris Nogiec underwear shoot

While most of us don’t look like Boston model / personal trainer / nutrition counselor, Chris Nogiec, (shown above) when we wear underwear, it doesn’t stop many gay men from paying top dollar for designer underwear.  These purchases can make for a great gift. The Underwear Expert blog shared the infographic below on mens’ underwear preferences and trends.

According to 45,000 survey responses from The Underwear Expert, the top choices in men’s underwear styles are Briefs (27%), Boxer Briefs (22%), Jockstraps (17%) and Trunks (15%). 54% of the men surveyed also prefer low-rise underwear and 41% prefer mid-rise underwear. The Underwear Expert infographic

First Light: New Year’s Eve in Provincetown

Provincetown New Year's EveProvincetown is once again pulling out all the stops for New Years celebrations. It has been several years since Sergio and I have spent New Year’s Eve in Ptown, but it looks like the town is hoping that more people will come to ring in the New Year.  Visiting Provincetown off season can be amazing fun.  If you are still trying to figure out what to do for New Year’s Eve you might want to consider driving down to Ptown with someone special or a group of friends.

Celebrations will start on Wednesday, December 30th and run through Saturday, January 2nd. NYE parties are planned at places like the Crown & Anchor and AHouse and there will be plenty of events including shows from some of your favorite Ptown entertainers like Miss Richfield and Dina Martina as well as special events like the annual Polar Bear Plunge and Fireworks.

For more information visit, ptown.org/firstlight.

Boston Santa Speedo Run 2015

Boston Santa Speedo Run 2015In case you missed it, this past Saturday Boston hosted the 16th Annual SSR (Santa Speedo Run) in the Back Bay.

This year there were fewer runners than in past years despite the unseasonably warm temperature but there remained (as usual) a very large contingent of gay men who participated.  Notably two large teams that have been raising money for several years: Team Wrecking Ballz who were dressed in black with antlers and Team Straight As A Candy Cane.

Unfortunately this year I cannot make a video but below are some photos from the run, which raises money for the PlayBall! Foundation.  Much thanks to Sergio for taking photographs and special thanks to friend and reader, Kyle Szary for sharing his photographs with me to share with you this year.

handsome, gay couple, cuddlingProbably the best medicine out there is waking up to a morning cuddle with someone you love. I’d like to prescribe this to all my readers.

Amen, Stephen Colbert

Steven Colbert strikes the right chord with his common sense and humor. If you happened to miss his comments about the latest shooting in CA and President Obama’s address, indulge me and take a listen to this video.
